I think I’ve got it!
I tried black --- too dark--- I tried white --- too light! Besides, who makes a white baby quilt? STAIN is the first thing a new mother learns ---
I know babies see black and white first --- and then into color, so this is what I decided to do!
I spent the morning cutting 1.5” strips from my solid black, and several different black on white prints. Again, it’s hard to go for things that are not too florally!
Reminder to self….think BABY BOY!!
I stuck with mostly geometrics, and just for fun, I threw in the black ants fabric…hahah!
I pieced checkerboard sashings for hours…only to find I’ve barely made it half way. Sheeesh! There is more piecing in the sashing than in the blocks! ((What was it I was trying to keep myself from doing with this baby quilt? Restrain from over-board piecing??!))
I dug into the box of pre-cut squares to pull out bright ones for my corner stones..there are still some that aren’t decided yet, more digging is required ---

I think it’s pretty dang fun!
I’ll do more on this later – right now --- I’m headed out the door. I’ve gotta get OUT of the basment. I’m headed for a massage ----one treat I save for myself on a some-what regular basis. It is ALWAYS good for what ails me, body, mind and soul!

The black and white checkerboard sashing is perfect!! And I recognize a lot of those fabrics from my own collection of black and white fabrics lol.

Wow! I'm loving that checkerboard sashing! It makes everything POP! And those fussycut centers are so darned cute! Turtle!!! :o) And it definitely says 'boy' without being overly blue! LOVE IT!

This is adorable!!!!! I love it! I was in a swap that had this type of fabrics for an I spy quilt and they have just sat on the shelf. This is very inspiring to get them out and make a couple of quilts for "someday" when I maybe will have someone to give it too!! I love this!!!

I don't know how you manage to do it time after time. That checkerboard is just perfect. I have to laugh about the fact you seem to think this sashing is endless--that's how I was feeling aout the 224 hourglass units!
This quilt surely has the "wow" factor we all strive to accomplish! You keep amazing us with your seemingly effortless beauties! I would love to be the baby to receive that quilt!
It gives me a great idea to use all those fabrics I have been collecting (like fot about 5 years now) to one day make an "I spy" quilt for my grandchildren,I just could not find the right pattern, up till now that is! And those great black and white sashings! It is on my definitely going to be made-list.

That sashing MAKES the quilt. This is going to be one awesome quilt when it's done.
It may be intense piecing for the sashing, but it is perfect, absolutely perfect for this quilt, and therefore totally worth it. It makes the star blocks, and their fun centers stand out strong.
Love the sashing! Really pulls the quilt together.

I love the black and white checkerboard. But you can use it only as the outter boarder and use plan colors inside all different to make it a bit easier.
Let me precede my comment with I think it looks awesome! but since you were trying to keep it a little less piecing intensive...What if you used the black and white in a double strip of sashing instead of the checkerboard, which would cut your sashing piecing down to 2 pieces per and kind of frame each star by turning the sashing so black touched all for sides of one block and white the next (like in a Warm Wishes quilt)...or elongated 4-patches of black and white, which would cut the piecing to 4 pieces from 16! Then you could use the checker board as a border.
I thought the above comment from Brenda was what I was thinking...but just almost.

Eons ago, when I was on AOL's quilt board, they called me the psycotic piecer because I NEVER went the easy route! Seems like we are sister after all! LOL. I LOVE the pieced sashing.
Perfect! I've struggled with sashes a lot - I've got to remember this idea. This had to be a "Eureka!" moment!
That's the type of colours I use for kids quilts. Then people usually say gee it's bright! Like somethings wrong with that and I say yes that's exactly how I want it. They look at me like I'm crazy! But I don't do pastels for babies either.
So from the ramble I'm saying I love it. ;-)

Oh Bonnie! This is even MORE perfect than I knew it would be. I was thinking B/W stripes but your checkerboard style 4-patches are PERrrrrFECT!
The baby will be drawn to this quilt very early as you are right that the see B/W contrast first - yet nothing about this quilt looks "babyish" so it will remain a loyal drag around companion for many years!

I made a bright busy baby quilt for one of my adopted grandsons who was born nearly blind with cataracts. After his surgery, my daughter said he ccouldn't stop looking at it even when he was supposed to be going to sleep. I think the busier the better!
Amazing lattice strips! I liked the star blocks before. But I LOVE the quilt with those strips added. SO worth the extra time.

O.k., I take back my previous comment--that sashing looks great! The black and white really makes the blocks pop! And lets not forget the timesaver you mentioned of not having to match points. Definitely a whoop, whoop on this one!

Love the quilt! Especially the black & white & brightness.
In Australia, even though "stain" is the first word a Mama learns, the second is "Napisan" (a powder bleach product that does not remove colour, soak overnight, then wash) so all white quilts are great!
I always had a bucket of Napisan at the ready when my son was little, heck I still do LOL.
Can't wait to see it finished, have a great massage. I love having massages, so good for getting the kinks out.
