Our guild is having a log cabin challenge this year....the quilts will be displayed at the public library. I wasn't going to do it, but I pulled out my mini-logs and figured if I made the quilt smaller than I intended.....I only needed to piece two more blocks...and border the thing. So it is done.
I killed many birds with one stone with this quilt! The blocks are paper pieced and used up my smallest crumbs. (Proving the fact that if it is still ugly, you just didn't cut it small enough!) The inner border is leftovers from my random sampler quilt border that I finished piecing at Tonyas. I only had to cut one more 1.5" strip.....so that cleared out some pre-cut strips.
The outer border fabric is the fun black with the colored squiggles that I picked up with Tonya while we went shopping in MD in October. See!! It didn't stay in my stash very long...I used it! :cD
The four basket blocks in the corners are UFO blocks....3 were pieced...one was cut out and needed to just be pieced. I didn't like doing them because of the set in seams....it just was tedious and time consuming, so it was the beginning of an abandoned project, and now they found a home in the borders of the little-logs-that-went-big quilt.
Some facts on this top: Started in 2001. block size: 3" finished. Number of blocks: 324. Pieces per block: 17. Total pieces in center: 5,508.
Definately a machine quilting project because it is very heavy with so many seams!

Bonnie, that's a stunner! I love log cabin quilts, but never in my wildest dreams would I have thought of a 3" finished block. And the setting with the star in one corner is really eye-catching. Love the border fabric, too.
Hope you can take pics of all the quilts when they're hung in the library.
Bonnie, that`s a wonderful quilt. Congratulations! Log Cabin was the first block I ever pieced. And it`s my favorite until today. The star in the corner is a great idea.
It is stunning! And I love the star on the bottom corner. I have a small log cabin quilt project that makes a star like design also - just haven't started it it! Yours is a STUNNER!

Wow, that is lovely! And 3" log cabin blocks are a lot of work, and you have made so many. Love the setting with the star in the corner. And the basket blocks in the borders really finishes it of:-)
It is definately a stunner - 1 question.... Why did you do an exploding star in 1 corner & teh "barn raising" units for the rest?

Just when I thought I was going break away from little, bitty pieces I came across your gorgeous quilt. I love log cabin blocks and your setting design is delightful. Maybe after a brief break from those tiny little buggers, I'll be ready to get right back in the saddle again.
Such small blocks, such a great quilt. It gives me ideas about cuting horrible fabric very small and then using it. Nothing wasted.
The baskets are a favorite of mine and are put here nicely to show.

Bonnie - that quilt is beautiful. I can only imagine how heavy is must be with all of those seams. I love the baskets in the borders. You always just seem to have the perfect extra blocks lying around that make the quilt so You.
Wow. Did you use any special technique to make such tiny loggie blocks? Are you going to meander-quilt it? It's to die for.
Oh, my. I won't use the word stunning... it seems to be overused as a descriptor here... ooops, I did! Well, maybe nothing else quite fits. it's absolutely incredible! A winner for sure.

There is just something so pleasing and "right" about a log cabin quilt. I love the change-up in the corner.
Wow, this is one fantastic quilt! I'm cutting out strips to make log cabin blocks, but not quite that small...and I hate paper piecing log cabin blocks, so I will strip piece them...my next leader/ender project. I'm almost finished with my first leader/ender project inspired by your website...am doing the blue and white one with the triangle squares and four patches. Thanks so much for your inspiration!
