I do A LOT of cutting--I kit my stuff up for the many retreats I attend. I do keep a little clock with a second hand by the sharpener so I go for the full 30 seconds. I oil the stone each time and wipe it clean and use a magnet to lift the newly sharpened blade to drop into an empty yellow storage case they orginally came in and mark it "sharpened July 2012".Allison in Planohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05771100777200593936noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13569819.post-55362892528560700162012-10-23T14:09:45.889-04:002012-10-23T14:09:45.889-04:00http://www.amazon.com/Colonial-Needle-Rotary-Blade...http://www.amazon.com/Colonial-Needle-Rotary-Blade-Sharpener/dp/B001CEAM88/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1351014450&sr=8-5&keywords=rotary+blade+sharpener

Bonnie - I hope it works to include this link in the comments. If not, it's for a simple hand-operated blade sharpener from Colonial Needle. I paid a lot less for mine than the listed price, on a 40 or 50% off notions special at my local fabric store.

I LOVE it. Simple to use, low-tech, and effective. I've had the same blade in my cutter for nearly two years. TWO YEARS! I do find that a good-quality blade (Olfa, for example) sharpens up better than a generic blade.

How well does it work? Let me draw you an analogy. Does it take your eight-year-old car and turn it into a brand-spanking new model with only 4 miles on the odometer? No. But it DOES turn your run-down old vehicle into a dealer's car with only 1,400 miles on it. Does that make sense? Close enough to new that I can be happy with it, esp. since a blade will last indefinitely if you don't nick it.

The gizmo doesn't cost much more than a couple of decent blades, so I thought it was worth the risk. In my opinion, mine has paid for itself many times over.Leahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09232459401326203771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13569819.post-80651047968491523872012-10-23T12:23:09.802-04:002012-10-23T12:23:09.802-04:00I too have one of those sharpeners and love it. Harbor ...Bonnie, here is a source for cheap blades. Harbor Freight sells rotary blades in their carpet installing section. Also I learned if you store your blades in a tin like Altoids has; place a round of flannel in the bottom, dampen the flannel with sewing machine oil; place 1 blade on top, another flannel round dampened with oil, another blade. Lid on the tin, stored and you can keep these blades for life with your sharpening machine which I do not have, BTW.Sharon J. Got it with Christmas money last year and am still using the same blades and they are still cutting. Of course, you have to play by the rules of the sharpener if you want it to work right-oil the heck out of the stones first and re-oil every time you use it, wipe off the stones when done to get the grit off and use the tweezers that come with it to handle the blades. I thought it was simple and easy and a great buy!
