I don't know how everyone else spent their Memorial Day holiday, but I am lucky enough to have the Quilters of The Night who always have their retreat over Memorial Day weekend as it gives those who are still working a paid holiday day off that they don't have to use vacation days for!
We rarely do anything for Memorial Day around here as a family - we don't go on vacation ourselves, and even if we get together it won't interrupt retreat time so Memorial Day is one of the holidays we do have retreaters on hand.
As quilters, what is one of our best ways to celebrate ANY holiday? By focusing on projects that keep those we are remembering in mind.
In this case, there are some wonderful stars being made for a Quilt of Valor.
A tribute to Yoda by Lisa Southerland.
A table runner in red, white, blue is happening here.
Projects in other colors were ongoing as well -
Cute cute trip around the world for a fast finish.
Percy the Penguin gets a funky mustache!
Though, if it's beneath his beak wouldn't it technically be a beard? LOL!
Boomerang by Jaybird Quilts is also together.
Beautiful landscape - all pieced in curves!
Giant hexies made from equilateral triangles for a binding odd angles demo.
Sometimes a simple framed 16 patch just satisfies.
I love the over-under woven look of this one!
Iris quilt from kitchen table quilting.
More simple piecing where the fabrics do all of the hard work -
Hole in one by Villa Rosa Designs.
Medallion quilt top finished!
If you have the pattern info for this, please leave it in the comments below.
Sampler blocks are on the wall!
Caught in the act of adding sashing!
Floral-y Nine-Patches!
Star Studded from Gigi's Thimble.
And this little guy came with his own quilt pattern on his back!
I'm talking about the turtle - not Jack.
We have had so much rain (close to 6" since Wednesday and I'm not complaining!) that this little guy felt free to wander up from the creek. We tried to point him back in the right direction so he could go back there.
Yesterday when taking trash to the curb, Hubster Dave found him in the middle of the driveway headed toward the road. (!!!) So we redirected him back down toward the creek again. I hope he finds his way.
I spent yesterday watching my little pile of foundation papers get smaller and smaller as I kept sewing on blocks.
I'm happy to report that this is the LAST block for the center of the quilt. If I have counted right. Please let me have counted right.
And it seams only appropriate that the neutral triangle with the cat showing ended up here. Quite a bit of her is lost into the seam allowance, but this piece is a nod to the studio supervisor who chose to stay inside most of the weekend due to the rain. I don't blame her.
She looks pretty cozy all sprawled out like this!
(She knows she is now living the good life...)
All blocks have been trimmed and de-papered.
I remove the paper as I trim them - why wait for that horrid job at the end? Small batches makes it easier.
Once the blocks are trimmed, the paper has done its job and it needs to be out of there. From here on out it will be just the same as sewing regular blocks together. No paper to pick from seam allowances.
That's a lot of blocks, y'all!
How come it doesn't seem like the scraps have gone down at all?
The Quilters of the Night are checking out this morning. It will be a day of laundry flipping and getting the house ready for tomorrow's group arrival.
And the revolving door life continues -
