I took this photo of Hubster Dave on his big red tractor yesterday afternoon.
We'd already been to the inn and back - I had to put an industrial heater to blow hot air at the compressor for the sewing room split unit. It was frozen up and encased in ice - all of which had slid off the roof and surrounded the unit.
His mission: To drive the tractor the 7 miles to the inn so he could plow the paved front drive and try to break up some of the snowcrete that is still encasing the drive up to the unloading zone and clear what he could of the back parking lot.
After scraping. Looking much better.
At least now the mail delivery can get up in here to deliver and pick up outgoing mail.
Facing the other direction -
We have some warmer temps coming. (It can't come soon enough!) But we were worried that wouldn't be enough to thaw the deeper frozen solid stuff so he was doing what he could to break it up a bit more.
Hopefully now the sun can do its thing to help the loading zone drive thaw out. Not everyone has a 4 wheel drive vehicle to take to retreat to make it up the drive. This needs to THAW!
He ran out of time and will be working on the parking area next. But guess what? We are expecting another 1-3 inches today. Please, weather app, be WRONG for once.
Some more stars happened yesterday - this one is a favorite! I love those little houses. The background isn't really brown, it's not really grey and was one of those fabrics that just didn't know what color it was!
I paired it with a recycled fabric from a shirt I loved. It picks up the blue and the green from inside the house print.
*Note* The above pattern does not use my Essential Triangle Tool to cut flying geese triangles from strips.
These 10 were made in yesterday's round of sewing.
I lave less than 10 more to go....but today won't likely be the day to finish them. I'm headed to Boone to the dermatologist.
Let's see what they decide to burn/freeze off this time?!?
Look who's still here.
No name yet, but I'm having nightmare dreams of whole cat colonies moving in.
When you are this far out, there is no close place or program that takes in spay/neuter and release cats on a quick drop off basis. You have to have an appointment. And it's at regular vet prices which can be expensive.
I'm searching for what I can do. My vet (That is an hour away) did take a humane society coupon giving me $50.00 off but it didn't help all that much. It would be different if I were near a big city but I'm not. Everything is an hour away.
I mean it when I say I'm having nightmares about this. I don't want a colony. I would be happy if Flash (Who will never be tamed. It's been a year. You can't get close to him) would move on...leaving me ZERO cats on the porch to attract more cats on the porch.
This grey one? I think she can be tamed. I think I could catch her and get her spayed. And maybe she could be an inside studio kitty with Tula if they would get along - which is yest to be seen. Tula is still healing.
I can take her out of her upstairs bathroom, brig her downstairs, she will tolerate pets on the couch for 5 minutes and then she runs right back up to the safety of her bathroom.
I am feeling like a cat mom failure and a bit overwhelmed with too many cats needing care. Too much to do the responsible thing of being able to catch them all and get them all neutered.
I'm trying. But it's just a lot.
On the funny side - and one thing that is likely adding to my nightmares - I watched a video of a gal who happily showed all NINE of her indoor cats, introducing them by name.
NINE!
Is it a wonder that cats are multiplying in my dreams and stressing me out?
Okay - off to the dermatologist.
I wonder if he'll consider just freezing the one under-the-chin mole that keeps growing a hair so I don't have to pluck it anymore?
Quiltville Quote of the Day -

Surround yourself with the fabric you love, and just keep sewing!
Happy Friday, everyone!

Thanks for doing what you can for those innocent animals. I'm looking forward to getting back to Quiltville, but I'm not sure it will happen in 2026. I have four trips this year (Egypt, Panama Canal, Caribbean, and Italy/Spain) plus I'm the chair of my guild's quilt show in July. Take care of you!
I make contributions to organizations that spay cats. Where should I send my contribution to you?

I know what you mean by a cat colony. My brother has one of those. They caught the ones they could and had them all fixed but there were a couple they could NOT catch so the cycle has already started all over again. Oh well, at least they get scraps from him and can hunt other things on their own.
Have you considered that some people are really allergic to cats? I for one would probably end up in the hospital after a day at the resort. I recommend you keep them to a minimum.
Don't say never. I had a feral indoor cat for 3 years (its a long story) before she finally let me touch her. Now she's in my lap almost every time I sit down. I've had her for 8 years.
I’ve heard “stash” called a “curated collection” as well. LOL I hear you on trying to save them all. I used to trap neuter release until it just got to be too much. Good luck with the snow melt. Fran in WA
Crossing my fingers that someone local will say, oh that's so-and-so's cat...or perhaps a local will take her after spaying as a barn cat?
Oh, gosh, I remember the good old days when my chin mole only had one hair, lol. There are now several - and other stiff, bristly hairs that have popped up elsewhere.
Please don't feel like a cat mom failure. You are an animal lover, and you do your best - that's all anyone can do. If you aren't already, put food out for Flash (and Tula, when she returns) but don't leave the dish when they are done. Limiting the time it is out will discourage others from hanging about. The gray one seems quite friendly, she must have been a pet. Although you are rural, maybe there's a "local" FB group? We have one that covers our area, from maybe 10 or so miles in each direction, where people post lost/found dogs and cats as well as other area news. Fingers crossed that one of your retreaters will adopt her. Who wouldn't love a Quiltville kitty?
Someone said she was a. Russian Blue breed so you could call her Blue or Indigo Blue after your quilt.
At one time, I was a very crazy cat lady! It started off with one Moma cat and 4 babies, and grew to the point I had at least 30 adult barn cats and gave away 60-70 kittens the last summer. My vet took pity on me and cut the spay cost in half if I brought him 2-3 cats at a time. I got them all fixed except one, of course. She was either pg or nursing when we saw her and disappeared for weeks at a time. I guess she finally got too old to have kittens, so the harem finally started decreasing in size. Needless to say, we never adopted any more barn cats after that. Now I only have one outside kitty who is fixed.

My daughter mourned the loss of her cat for weeks. One day it showed up well fed and groomed. Her neighbor down the street had started feeding it and the cat changed owners! Just a thought. I don't feed anything unless I own it.
I hear you on the cat colony nightmares. After worrying over, feeding, heating and finally capturing, taking to vet, spending over $500 on an injured stray last winter, the owners showed up, took him back, and didn't give us a dime. And we miss him! You can only do what you can do.
My Neice says you tweezers those hairs, you pluck a chicken. Cat nightmares, oh my! Glad Dave got the ground plowed. Hope the weatherman hears your pleas. We have fog this am in SE Washington State.
I know what you mean about stray cats! I feed the ones near my home, too! The Humane Society in my area will TNR them for free, but you need an appointment! I understand their need for an appointment, but they're strays. What are you supposed to do? Open the patio door and tell them it's time for your doctor appointment?
