The worst part of quilting? Top construction!
I love making the blocks - each and every one.
Choosing fabrics to play together, cutting, sewing, pressing, sewing some more. I love everything about this whole process.
And then the real work comes...there are many ways to sew a quilt top together.
If the blocks are simple enough I can web the whole top in continuous rows where rows are held together by chaining threads between the blocks. Easy Peasy.
Sometimes I will join the blocks into big four-patches and then join those to complete bigger sections only having to deal with a couple of long seams.
And that is what I did here, making roughly two "halves" even if one half is bigger than the other it still keeps things a bit more balanced when sewing long seams.
My least favorite job?
Pinning points!
If you struggle with this too, here are some helpful hints.
First off, if you look at my pressing, I already solved half of the problem by pressing the first seam on my flying geese under toward the large triangle. That helps seams oppose when geese tip meets geese tip.
I take my first pin and point match, running the anchor pin through both points to be matched.
With that anchor pin holding my points together, I take a second pin and do a quick in-and-out above the anchor pin to hold things right where they need to stay.
Without the anchor pin, an in-and-out pinning by itself may shift things.
Because we all know that SHIFT HAPPENS! (And yes, there is a seam ripper for that!)
I try my best to not run over pins. I've broken needles running over pins. I will stop right at the pin, pull the pin and continue on.
I do not pin ALL machine seams. The next seams I get to are pressed to nest and are straight forward, no points.
I tend to only pin when point needs to match point.
Pretty dang good!
Taking a victory lap!
This quilt doesn't have or need borders. So I do some stay stitching around the outside edge of the top with the quilt top face down on my machine bed so I can manage which way these seams need to go.
This keeps seams from popping open during the quilting process and will minimize any stretch that can happen.

Do all points match perfectly? Nope!
But it's good enough for me!

Good morning 🌞
You are making great progress on your quilt! Wow! Looks fantastic.
Well, I'm the new owner of another Vintage Singer machine. I caved and bought at a very reasonable price, a 201-2 in a #42 cabinet that my husband is refinishing for me.
I am sew excited to have it. I've heard a lot of wonderful things about this machine....No More machines for this Gal.
Have a Sparkling day with your friends.
Blessings 💞 🙏
I like what you have done around the Pinwheels. The triangles look like a crown. Crowning Glory maybe?
I love your quilt. The colors are right up my alley. I am looking forward to when this becomes available as a pattern. I am sure I will have forgotten about it when it is a pattern for sale and I will fall in love and be motivated to want to make this quilt all over again. I also envy your ability to web quilts. I can't or don't seem to wrap my head around that process. Thankfully I have found a method of putting my tops together that makes sense to my brain. Your backing fabrics are beautiful too. Enjoy your low key 4th with friends.
I love the way all those colors play together. Never would have thought it would work. Nice!
This latest quilt is just so beautiful. My mind started racing yesterday with possible other color combinations and an eagerness to be able to download a pattern. Then you posted this gorgeous quilt top today and honestly, I was a little disappointed initially, to hear that the pattern wouldn't be available until next year. However, this IS a very good thing. I do understand how many plates you have spinning in the air already. AND, frankly I fell in love with this lovely quilt top because of your color choices. SO, having to wait until next year some time is a blessing in disguise as that will allow me time to collect some luscious oranges and pinks. Thank you again for sharing your immense creativity with us. I truly enjoy reading your blog with my breakfast. It allows for some great, early in the day inspiration. Have a marvelous, safe and happy Independence Day, Bonnie.
Have a wonderful 4th of July
Happy 4th of July!
Happy 4th Bonnie and Dave!! And I love this quilt!!!!
Beautiful quilt. Dazzling star. I do agree with your quote today! Enjoy your time with friends. Dianne
That is an extremely apt comment today, Bonnie. Let's pray things don't get worse! Lovely quilt, and I'm already thinking of colors to use for mine when the pattern comes out.
It's a Red, White and Blue Day! I will do the Baseball part of the old Chevrolet commercial. Fireworks afterwards. Love how you make the pressing work best to nest the seams. Thank you!! Seems I have seen this block before...
Great post! I especially like the quote from Abraham LIncoln! Thank you.
I love that you have 4 stashes -- garage, basement, QPO, and cabin. It makes perfect sense to me. Happy July 4th!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your instructions on matching points. I learn and improve with every Bonnie Hunter project because your instructions are spot on!
Thank you, Bonnie! ❤️
I'm with you on the pinning. I hate it. But, it's a necessary evil! But I do love it when all of the blocks are done & ready to be in the "top status!" You have another beautiful top on your hands! I can't wait to see it done. I am cutting for my log cabin blocks today. This evening we are going to my brother in law's for a little gathering. Everyone have a safe & happy 4th!! :-)
Love your Quiltville Quote of the Day
Hope your July 4th evening with friends was fantastic. (I didn't have time to get on the computer yesterday due to family coming in.)
Just wanted to pop in and say Congrats on finishing the beautiful top, and the backing pieces will be perfect. Also I totally agree with you--I very much dislike sewing all the blocks together! :-) Jenny
