On one such visit we enjoyed a hike with my husband’s
cousin who lives in Moose Pass.
“Better hurry and enjoy it,” the fireweed says as
blooms march up its stem dropping its blossoms from bottom to top.
When all blossoms have dropped, another beautiful Alaskan
summer has gone by, marked by fireweed flowers going to seed.
As the saying goes: “when fireweed turns to cotton,
summer will soon be forgotten.”
Fireweed is the flower of an Alaskan summer, and it's everywhere. It can reach up to 5 feet tall in the temperate rainforest or cap out at less than a foot tall in the alpine tundra.
The colors of the purple/pink fireweed and the
sometimes-red of the stems inspired the colors of this quilt.
I hit up my scraps for a wide variety of reds and purples
for the half-square triangles that frame each nine-patch block center.
The nine-patches and squares at the end of each sashing
and the cornerstones all came from my love of sewing with recycled 100% cotton
shirts including plaids, stripes and prints.
If sewing from fat-quarters and yardage, any scrappy mix here will do. It doesn’t have to be plaids or shirt fabrics.
Scrappy nine
patches are surrounded by triangles in red and purple inspired by the Fireweed
flowers of an Alaskan Summer. Use your favorite fabrics - off the bolt or recycled from shirts.
Piecing options, full color photos and graphics and many tips for easy piecing
pleasure included.
Quilt Size: 76’’ X 90’’
And yes, there is a Gift-Away!
I'll be drawing for two winners who will each receive a Fireweed PDF pattern from me and a Facets of Red fabric roll from Cotton to Quilts.
Yes, they have many more cotton rolls available - be sure to check out their adorable neutral rolls!
We will draw for our two winners on Saturday, 6/28/25.
Good luck, everyone!

Thank you, Fireweed, did not know the name in English. I’m originally from Finland and this was one of my favorite summer flowers, it’s so happy.
Great Pattern!
I love seeing all the Scrappy colors in this Quilt. I dreamed I sashed a bunch of blocks from my UFO stacks last night. Can't stop Quilting, even in my dreams. Have a wonderful Wednesday!
Outstanding advice in today's quote !

Welcome home! You were missed. I love the fireweed flowers in AK! The quilt is beautiful, I think it will go on the to make list !
Visited Alaska last year and the Fireweed were amazing!! Will be going to Iceland in October to hopefully see the Northern Lights up close and in person.
Northern Lights - maybe an idea for a new quilt? Yay!

Small world. I live about 3 hrs from Moose Pass. :) I really like this one (but then I love them all) LOL
Hi Bonnie, I had wanted to go to Iceland with you, but I knew we would be in the middle of moving, and we are. I have been to Alaska twice and fell in love with fireweed. The colors and dainty flower and plant, at least looking to me, but it grows in Alaska so it is a hearty plant. When I was in Alaska on my first trip my mother was also on the trip, and she was an avid quilter, so we found a quilt shop and they had a Fireweed wall hanging kit, which of course I got, and made up. It is one of my favorites, due to subject and memories. It will find a special place in my new home
