When you look at this photo - do you see chaos and confusion?
Or do you see possibilities just waiting to be discovered?
I think there is a good life lesson in this somewhat sorted mess.
I find the most satisfaction when I am up to the challenge of taking something like this and turning it into something beautiful - be it a simple string quilt, or a more complicated version of a string quilt - or even using these random strips in log cabin blocks as with my current ongoing project.
The only not-really-a-problem is that this project was intended to at least make a dent in the "saved small stuff" and the large bins of mixed up strings.
So far? I don't think it's going to m ake a visible dent even for a quilt that is going to end up somewhere around 80'' X 80''.
No visible dent at all!
But is that necessarily a BAD thing? Maybe not.
If it enables me to keep sewing and keep creating, do I really care if it is all "used up" or not?
I still need around another 40 blocks.
And there still won't be a noticeably visible difference in the scraps.
Because - look what was waiting for me on the front porch at the inn when I arrived yesterday morning!
I care package from Carrie! (Thank you, friend!!)
She even separated out most of the neutrals for me....Yep. I'll be digging into those to add to my variety today.
Progress is kind of slow on these - it takes me 45 minutes or so to make one small log cabin block. By the time I head home it doesn't feel like I've accomplished much. But I know I have.
I'm not feeling in a hurry these days. It's more about putting pieces through the machine, making small choices as to what fabric will go where.
It's almost a meditation. And that's what I need right now.
Meanwhile, next door:
Burry zoomed-in photo of Flash.
He is still very wary of us - but he knows that his humans will be bringing him food and he is there for it.
I am hoping is stops looking so scrawny. I want him to trust us a bit more. I don't know if we'll ever be able to touch him, but now when he runs away, it's just a few feet away...not around the corner, down the porch, down the front steps and across the yard.
He stays close. I'm taking that as progress.
Inside the inn, progress is happening!
Love these Burgoyne Surrounded blocks!
Assembly is happening here -
And becoming this!
It's one of those "3 yard quilts" but I"m not sure what book it is from.
Beautiful sampler blocks in blue batik will be added to:
This lovely medallion on the design wall!
The sampler blocks were all made by guild members and are being placed in this original setting. No pattern that I know of.
A growing Quilt of Valor on the design wall.
And it's never too early, or to late - for Pumpkins!
We escaped the "What's for dinner?" conundrum by accepting an offer to head out to a local Japanese place with friends. Yummy!
We are limited in the number of restaurants available to us in our small rural area. There is an American grill that is great for burgers, wings or my favorite - Rubens.
There is a locally owned pizza place we love that has an awesome salad bar.
There are a couple of Mexican places we switch between depending upon our mood.
All of the above is locally owned, not chain affiliated. It makes me happy to support local - and the Japanese place fit that bill last night.
From there it was finishing up the last side of binding, and starting in on stitching the hanging sleeve down - though someone else had other ideas -
Time to celebrate even the small wins!
Happy Friday, everyone.

Those bins hold soooooo many quilts, maybe 100? I have a 2x8x10 4 drawer unit on a stash shelf and in it goes the dregs of a fabric cut into it's largest square. Well, last year they were all stuffed. Wait for it......I got 13 twin size quilt tops from those little drawers and only added sashing.
And yes, those bins would drive me mad. My strings go to 2 string-loving friends via USPS when a box is stuffed. It's good we all know someone who loves what we don't, making our quilting world go around :-)
I read somewhere that the real heroes are the nappers, because it takes a tremendous amount of courage to wake up twice in one day any more... I know that I really cherish those few seconds before the doom of today's reality sets in. I am off to hide in the comfort my fabric for a while. Call a politician and share your concerns.
Lol!! Love the quote! The quilts are nice too.
Flash looks a bit like Ivy 😻😻
Bonnie, you have so beautifully captured a metaphor of response to these challenging times for us quilters. Bringing order of chaos with those strings and creating something beautiful.
Great job Quilters! It's so inspiring to see everyones projects. I'm always picking up new ideas and patterns that are new to me. For example, I hadn't heard of Burgoyne Surrounded before. It's so pretty. Thanks so much for including pictures of beautiful projects in your Blog, and pattern names when you have them. :-) Jenny
That bin! That box! I'd be happily pressing and organizing for days. But sometimes that's my favorite part of quilting, just playing with fabric. Don't need to measure, cut straight, or match seams when you're separating scraps. And somehow, other people's scraps are more fascinating than my own! If I can get my hands on them, I'm an extremely happy camper. So can I volunteer to organize those for you?! LOL
Scraps are supposed to go down? Kinda like pasta?? Those log cabins are time consuming but lovely. Keep us posted on Flash's progress. I will bet you will see much more of him with your time and patience. I'm sure Tula will have a big influence on him. Keep sewing 🪡
Strings or selvages. I have bins of both. Lot of possibilities. I want to cover a chair in my spare time. 12", oh My!!! We are at 10° this morning. Rain expected later tonight. Can't stay home and stitch. Deadlines are calling.. today is my last day to enter for the Quilt show in March. Love all the Projects. Carrie was h Dr lying her scrap mamaginment sending you the box. She forgot the Chocolate, lol. Happy FriYay.
All the quilts are beautiful! I especially like Burgoyne Surrounded ~~ I like dark/black and white color combos. I had to stop and clean my sewing room because the chaos was getting to me. I still need to do some more organizing today and then I'll be able to get my brain around piecing.
Ivy and Flash could be brother and sister.
I noticed the cover photo changed. I'm loving it!! Also the beautiful things coming out of the Inn!! If you can get that string bin down, you'll be my hero! HA!! J/K... you already are. That's why I love coming by to see what you are up to on the daily. My visit is a little earlier today since my stupid ears won't stop buzzing and I stayed home. Which means no sewing for me, but I'm ok with that too. It gives me time to plan the next couple that "need" to be done by May! Happy sewing and stay warm! :)
Oh, my the new header is so sweet! Love that tongue! :-) What a fun way to start my day. The strings make me happy since I am currently working with 1" and 7/8" squares while working on Lori Holt's snowman quilt. I decided to do it 50% of the size so it will be about 42" by 45" instead of 86" x 90". It is all relative I keep saying! I am glad to be done with the little snowflakes that are 2" unfinished! So I understand about putting things through the machine and making it meditation because working with small pieces does make one a happy camper! Thanks for all of your happy and fun animal pictures. They make my day since we don't have any animals. Hope you can stay warm. Love your log cabins too. I am hoping my mystery quilt will sew itself together soon! :-) K-
I’m fortunate enough to belong to a large guild - -300+ members. At each guild meeting we have a “Free” table. Anything quilty you don’t want can go on there and you can take anything you want from it. I’ve gotten so many lovely fabrics to use in community service quilts and put all kinds of things on the table I no longer want or use - duplicate rulers, a bag full of selvages, orphan blocks. All this finds a new home. Anything left on the table at the end of the meeting is donated to local thrift stores.
A box full of quilts just waiting to be born 🤣 sometimes I think if I use the same scraps in another I'm going to scream🤣 I came across " The opinionated Quilter" she makes a nsin quilt then the lathers scraps, till no scraps from the main one are left😀 for the second quilt with a different twist maybe a new color then a trim from the crumbs
I thought the same thing! Maybe Ivyishis aunt, or even sibling!
In Lawrence, Kansas, we were down to -11 Thursday morning - and our furnace gave out! We woke up to cold noses and a 55 degree house. Luckily, the service people had a blower motor on the truck and by 10 am we had the heat back on.
Wish the current government was this competent.
I am working on Hamilton Gardens - and I cannot believe it doesn't look like I've made a dent in my scraps! Love your blog - hope to get to the Inn some day -
Yes, yes! We, the American People must stand up and speak out. Write your Representatives and Senators. Tell them how you feel about what is going on. Frequently. Staying silent gives them the idea that we agree with them.
Thank you, Bonnie, for bringing Solidarity back for us to appreciate and remember what we felt like when you first created it. We are in terrifying times and this quilt gives me some hope.
