Tuesday Update:
We were able to drive from here up to Boone, down through Blowing Rock and on to Lenoir for Dave's doc appointment.
We were able to fill the gas tank in Lenoir but the Walmart that was open had no fresh anything after being without power so long. No produce, dairy, eggs etc. But there was packaged and canned items and lots of bottled water.
Son Jeff is on his way up from Elkin to help us with some clean up today and is bringing some items.
Propane truck made it to the retreat late yesterday and filled the tank so I can now run the generator there.
Power MAY be restored as projected by midnight tonight but some areas may and likely will take longer. That's okay.
We have seen hundreds of utility trucks with hardworking folks who are helping us patch things back together and we are so grateful for all of the communities outside of our area who have traveled far and wide to come help.
My plan for today is to head over to the local school where they have set up a soup kitchen to feed folks who are worse off than we are. Jeff will be here with Dave, I can go over there and lend my hands.
And day by day we continue to be kind to one another and help each other and we rediscover just how little we need to truly be happy.
Still typing from my phone but grateful I can get word out intermittently.

Bonnie, the mainstream media is not reporting on the ongoing disaster. My sister in Greenville, SC is without food and power and gas. More people could chip in and help willingly but they do not know the urgent need. Spread the word.

My granddaughter lives in Asheville and is without power and water as well as spotty cell service. Her parents were able to get up there Sunday and take supplies to her hoping they could leave things for others to use and bringing her back with them. She chose to stay in Asheville and help with the clean up. You are so kind to help with the soup kitchen. My daughter said that until you see the damage in person you can’t understand how bad the mountains were hit. So glad you were able to get to Lenoir for Dave’s doctors visit.

I'm so sorry for Dave's injuries and also grateful you are both still with us. The devastation left by Helene is impossible to take in. Some of my favorite places in NC and TN are destroyed. May we all unite as we are able and help those who have lost so much.
I would disagree Linda, the major news sources I read daily, and WLOS and other YouTube sources I read daily are reporting all day and every day. I have property in a development in Maggie Valley west of Asheville and have been able to get reports from a few of the residents there even though Duke Energy is out in some of WNC. Over 1M residents were without power and now it's down to 400K ppl, that's remarkable in less than a week with the devastation. I have friends in Fletcher, Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Waynesville, Asheville (restaurant owner friend and others) and Chattanooga, TN and have read all reports from them, read stories on Citizen-Times in Asheville. It's front page news on the Washington Post and the New York Times. Haywood County put in a temporary fix to the residents along my small road to the development I have property in, this is in less than a week. Food, water, gasoline is being delivered to Asheville and the surrounding areas that have road access. Roads are being cleared for access. It will takes months, maybe a few years for the devastating effects in WNC, north and south to recover, rebuild and flourish.
Why is mainstream media not reporting on this? Where’s the Biden administration? Where’s FEMA? Heaven help everyone down there.
Hi Bonnie this is Pennyguglie I am an everyday reader and an occasional commenter. Also an idiot who can't get on her Google account right now.. I have friends up in Lenoir. Haven't tried calling but your blog says a lot. Hope Dave is healing well and the clean up goes as well as possible.
From out here in California I've been trying to support World Vison and Samaritan's Purse on the ground in the southern states. Praying for all.

They do report on it. I live in California and have no other family in the US. So I definetly heard about the devastation through mainstream media. Asheville - 35 years ago, pretty much to the day I was there. My first flight and first visit to the US. I am so sad.

If you aren’t hearing about this disaster where you “think” you are getting news, time to find a better news source. Imagine what else you haven’t heard about.
Really? I see it on the news daily. FEMA is there. Maybe you need to get a new place for national news
