I played hooky yesterday.
We kicked off a long holiday weekend a bit early – there was no reason not to.
After what seems like months and months of rain, we were finally granted some beautiful weather and spent a good chunk of our afternoon and early evening hours hiking up at Grayson Highlands State Park to see what we could see.
I was last up here early June, and in a month’s time – so much has changed!
Mountain laurel blooming pink.
beautiful views.
Zoey is intrigued by the ponies!
We love this time of day up there – by 6pm most of the day visitors are heading home – and things are cooling down with plenty of daylight left to get in a couple of hours on the hiking trails.

We didn’t get home until about 8pm, dinner was late but we didn’t mind. It was just FINALLY the lovely kind of summer evening you don’t want to end.
Citronella candles fragranced the air on the porch, and we ate outside just enjoying the night sounds and the end of a rewarding day – where NO SEWING HAPPENED!
More Mountain Laurel -
SO pretty!
This morning back on the porch.
Our leisurely yesterday extended over into a leisurely morning this morning – hence this post coming a bit later than normal – but what’s the rush?
There will be some mail to go out today – and then I am taking the weekend off in full holiday stay-cation mode.
There is nowhere to go, no family gatherings, no parades or fireworks – just a porch rocker, a fire pit, good food, a long sleep in -
And maybe some sewing if I feel like it -
I kind of like how July is starting out so far!
Quiltville Quote of the Day -
Every day we have opportunities to make a difference. Look for them.
Have a lovely Friday, folks!

Have an awesome weekend and enjoy your sunshine! :)
Enjoy your Fourth Bonnie. This Year is definitely one for the books. You have learned to make lemonade from lemons. Good for you.
Enjoy the holiday, Bonnie. Aren't we blessed to be citizens of this nation! It may not be perfect, but dare I say, it is made up of imperfect citizens. :-)
And BTW, thank you for your faithful blogging. Day in, Day out, a good morning chat from you awaits me every day. I'm spoiled. And grateful. Also, I can't think of anyone else who has furthered my quilting experience as much as you have. Thank you. You are a national/international quilting treasure.
And now, before I get too sappy, stay well and have a fun weekend.
Enjoy!!! You certainly deserve it and what a beautiful place to be.
Hope you have a weekend filled with love, laughter and Lola!
Such beautiful views. Glad you got to kick back and enjoy your time.
Enjoy your weekend, Bonnie
This is exactly what we need right now...peace, quiet, calm, joy. This is where I come daily for this slice of normal. Thanks so much for sharing. ♥
Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!
What a beautiful post!! We are very grateful to you Bonnie, for your lovely posts! Have a wonderful weekend with bright and sunny days for hiking, basking in the beautiful weather and enjoying being alive just to hear the crickets!!
Love your mountain views, we live in north Alabama and spent our honeymoon in the TN/NC Smokey Mts 57+ yrs ago. We usually visit once a year, but won't happen this year. So we will visit the VA mts. with you.
Enjoy! I was admiring the fire pit, looks like glass rocks and so pretty.
Happy July 4th! While you enjoy the sunshine, we are in gratitude for the much needed rain we received this week. Even though it can be a bit warm here in Texas, we bask in the sunshine, too! June
Thanks for sharing your beautiful day in the Blue Ridge. That little foal was quite content chillin' while mama snacked about. Your Mountain Laurel is different from that in Texas - Texas is a lovely lavender while yours is pink. Both beautiful and the fragrance is wonderful. Enjoy a wonderful relaxing weekend.
DITTO from me Lindah, you said it so well!!
Seems like just the perfect day to play hooky and why not! Love the beautiful scenery and the pony’s are so lovely just gently munching their way through the grass lol. Thank you for sharing the lovely video of the mum and her foal.have a lovely holiday weekend.

Happy Independence Day. I could hear birds in your video and not cicadas! Love the panorama view, love the ponies, the adorable foal and WOW! The fire pit looks fabulous with the blue . . . glass? I didn't know you could do that!

I love the mountain laurel blossoms, as if hand quilted around the edges.
