Why Quilts Matter! Give-Away!

quiltsmatter1
***NOTE*** This Give-Away has ended!!  Contracts to pdudgeon!!

Have you watched Why Quilts Matter?

The series has aired on PBS and has been featured on The Quilt Show, but we're still trying to get the word out to quilters. All proceeds of the series go back to the non-profit Kentucky Quilt Project to fund future quilt projects.

In 2011, thirty years since its founding, The Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc., has created another “first” – a nine-part documentary series titled Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics. The series takes a fresh look at quilts and spreads the word about their unique position at the center of a startlingly broad grid of topics, ranging from women’s studies to the contemporary art market.

"Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics" is the landmark nine-part documentary series that offers a fresh, relevant exploration of quilts.

This fascinating series explores quilts in fresh new ways by taking you behind the scenes to reveal the unique position of quilts at the center of American culture. You'll go on an amazing quilt journey from function to art, to women's empowerment, economic clout, American politics and beyond.

"This compelling and visually rich series convinces us that quilts do matter. VERDICT: This wonderful series would be an important addition for all museums, libraries and quilt guilds."
- Library Journal Review

  5. I remember visiting my grandparents on their farm in North Carolina when I was growing up, and there were always TONS of quilts piled high all over the place. My grandmother and aunt always quilted in their spare time off from cooking, canning, freezing food, and running a house of nine kids! I sure wish I had just one of those quilts, the one I remember most was sunbonnet sue!

  6. I am the 4th generation quilter in our family. Quilts matter to me because of the creativity quilting allows me to express. I love all aspects of quilting: the planning, the piecing, the quilting, and most of all the giving.

Quilting is the relaxation and and quiet contemplation time in my life. I have started the quilting tradition in my family; my mother gave me my avarice for needlepoint and my grandmother crocheting - which I rarely do anymore. But my children (and hopefully my grand-daughter) appreciate the quilts I make and are extending their artistic likes more and I have seen more acceptance in them for the different quilts I create. I would love to have this series as a way to learn and teach my brood about why quilts are important.

Quilts provide connection for me; connection to myself as an artist, connection to my friends in memory of time spent together making quilts;connection to the receiver of the quilt. And with the size of my stash---connection to the future; plenty of supplies and time to spend making more quilts! Nell nellsheartstrings@yahoo.com

    Hi Bonnie
This is a great giveaway. Quilting has been a part of my life since I was 16. My Mother did not sew but my Mother-in-law did. She taught me how to hand piece and hand quilt and I have had a project (or more) going ever since. I will be celebrating my 45th wedding anniversary this summer, along with quilting that long, as well. I love quilts!

When I am quilting I feel a connection to a Grandmother whom I never knew. She died before I was born. Members of my family tell me that I remind them of her because, out of all the grandchildren, I am the only one who inherited her crafty traits. I lose myself when I am quilting and all of lifes problems fade into the background. I feel good about sharing my love of quilting with my family and being able to leave behind a piece of my heart when I am no longer on this earth.

  11. I was a part of that process of helping our Homemaker club sponser a day where we looked at quilts that people brought to us. We had papers for them to fill out and tell us about the quilt. It was quite a great day to see all the quilts and help with this project!

Quilting has been a generational activity for my family. Like so many, my sister and I were taught to make nine patch blocks from our feed sack scraps and clothing scraps. We continue to quilt and take great satisfaction in making quilts for charity purposes. We have encouraged our daughters and granddaughters to continue the satisfying hobby.

Quilts matter because throough Quilting I have made some wonderful friends and memories. I didn't have a mother or grandmother who quilted--but I am working with my granddaughter so that someday she will be able to appreciate the love and caring that goes into it. Enjoyed seeing the history of quilts through this series.

  14. There are many reasons why quilts matter, but lately... after 14 years of quilting, I realize that every quilt has a story. And a purpose. Heirloom, or simple couch snuggler... there's a story. I love quilting.

  16. Quilts matter because they are an extension of me, of my family. of my history. My pieces are not always perfect but then neither am I. They layers of the quilt are the generations of my famuly with the threads that hold them together being our customs and traditions. Quilts are like family, they wrap themselves around you to protect you from the storms of life and during easy times, they adorn your home,as a family adorns your life. 22. Quilts are a way to pass love from generation to generation. I slept under a quilt that had been my Dad's made probably by his aunt and grandmother until it frayed into oblivion. My great niece sleeps under a quilt made from her great grandmother's dresses that was made by her great great grandmother and her great great great grandmother. I hope the loved ones I have made/are making quilts for will love using them as much as I loved making them.

  27. What a great series, hadn't heard about it. It is SO important to remember, document and celebrate all parts of history as those who can speak to it will some day be gone. We need these tangible reminders and information to pass on. As you said recently, labelling the quilt is important, history in the making. I grew up with embroidery, crafts and quilting was wholecloth pieces or tied utility ones to sleep under, and there were group projects to send to countries in need. Thanks for this chance.

  50. I love history and it's about time to give some credence to this history of what women have contributed to our country. They're not just pretty blankets! Women made them to contribute to the well-being of families, to provide for loved ones, to be seen as partners in the home. It was important then, and it's still important even though we can buy anything now. Plus it's a creative outlet and a satisfying craft!

  51. Quilts were imprinted on me when I spent many a night under the heavy ones my grandmother, Missy, made. They were wool and cotton left over from clothes and feed sacks, had newspaper in them, and the batting had the cotton seeds in it as well. My grandparents grew cotton and, I think, the batting came from their fields. I made my first quilt 39 years ago and haven't stopped since. Quilts mean family, cozy, history, and a connection with my past.

As a scrappy quilt lover and maker I love taking what most would consider worthless and creating a beautiful masterpiece with much thought and prayers for many times an unknown recipient. 70. Is it even a queastion, why quilt matter?
The quilts I make connect me to the person using them. How wonderful to get something that required time to do in the age of email, textmessages and computers.
All the younger kids in my extended family kind of intrinsically understand this and ask me "when will you do something for me again?"

Also, quilting, its symmetry and the monotone humm of a sewing maschine relaxes me in the evening after work.

  87. Quilts represent some of the best aspects of our lives - loved ones that make or receive quilts, our past history through bits of cloth that we once wore, a connection to family members long gone. The beauty of a quilt makes people happy and warm, transmitting the work of the quilter into an 'on-demand' hug. Quilts can unite generations and promote the causes of peace and healing. There is nothing negative about a quilt!

Why quilts matter? It is the connection between me and my maternal grandmother (who passed away 20+ years before I was born). Even though I never knew her, I grew up admiring her quilts. And today, I still feel like we have a connection because we shared the love of working with fabric.

  96. Quilts matters they are made and given with the love that goes into them. The receiver always knows when they are wrapped in a quilt that they are getting a little hug. Quilting is also very therapeutic to the soul and mind. Thanks for the chance to win.

Quilts matter to me as it was a connection to my mother. She was a quilter and I learned to quilt from her long distance. We would talk on the phone about methods and our various projects. I'd take my finished tops and quilts for a trunk show when I'd go visit. We'd have a retreat while I was there. What a wonderful time we'd have!

Quilts matter to me because my grandmother made quilts for each of her grandkids (all by hand), my mom made quilts for all of her grandkids that were born while she was still alive. I love the history of quilts and have always been fascinated with how pioneer women made them.

  102. I have seen most of the shows. It was well done and would love to sit down and see them all in one sitting. Quilts matter to me because it is a way of connecting with all the women in my life. My great grandmother whose treadle machine was then used by my grandmama and then my mom and aunt learned on it. I cleaned it up a few years ago and the stories it would tell if only it talked. I have another great grandmother's quilt and my paternal grandmother

  104. I love making quilts, especially when they are for others. Some take a while, but they are more precious when done. I only wish I had some from my Grandmother.

I teach elementary school children how to quilt - nothing is so exciting as introducing a child to the concept of creating their own fabric, choosing other fabric and backing then creating their own quilt! This series would give me a whole new level of information to share! Thanks for the opportunity!

Quilts matter to me for many reasons. I have a lot of health issues that give me lots of pain, and even if I get 10 minutes a day or a couple hours or I can just sit and dream going thru magazines, it makes me feel better. I have also found a whole group of wonderful friends to quilt with. I love feeling like I'm doing something positive by making donation quilts. It has totally changed my life!!! Sonya Wood. 108. Quilting connects like no other art form! Sometimes the materials used are new; sometimes they are borrowed; sometimes thay are recycled! We share ideas and tips and techniques...even share needles! ;). Not a bad thing, in this case!
I would love to own that series! Thanks for the chance!

  109. Quilts matter because they are a part of our heritage. Also because they are an extremely useful by-product of our need to create. They are not only useful, but a work of art, as well.

Quilts are history...the history of who we were and are. And my grandson settles down faster under my quilt.

  113. Quilts matter because they come from the heart and are given away with love. Every quilt is a personal story and a part of someone's past.

  114. Quilts matter to me because it links people to people whether it be man, woman or child. I've often wondered what a maker was thinking, doing, living when looking at a quilt. I feel enriched living now and being able to see and learn what I'm sure other quilters would have loved if they were living in our time.

  116. Why quilts matter is the same reason that any ART matters...Our expression in this way is who we are. The process of making quilts can be cathartic. The finished product a balm to the soul for both maker and recipient!
Thanks for the chance to win the series.

Putting quilts together for me is like painting a picture. It brings such peace and satisfaction. Takes me somewhere where I need to go. Have had the good fortune to meet so many wonderful girls along my journey, I am so grateful.

  118. Quilts matter because they are so full of information and insight into the life of the quiltmaker. My dear great aunts (Sallie and Annie)made scrappy quilts that are works of art but they were made to keep their loved ones warm. They had virtually no money but we are rich in our quilt heritage. I think about quilts everyday...get inspiration for color combinations everywhere. Oh, boy, do quilts matter! (sally in sc......jspwarren at aol dot com

  119. Quilts matter to each one of us for different reasons. For me it is a form of "warm love to wrap my boys bodies with from Mom". My boys are grown, married, with kids of their own.

  123. I am blessed to have a signature signed by my great grandmother, grandmother and various other relatives on my fathers side. When I make a quilt, I know that I am continuing a tradition that has gone on for years. Everyone needs some connection to the past, quilting is one of mine.
