Working on your pattern 9 in the middle. Was a leader ender but is now my main project as I have nothing else prepped for today. Love watching you. Thank you. From Fiona in slightly warm Queensland Australia
Thanks for sharing, Fiona, I love seeing your set up!
It’s a Quicky Quilt-Cam night!
I head for the airport at the bright hour of 4am tomorrow on my way to Colorado Springs, and this girl still needs to pack the trunk show and suitcase and get to bed!
During the last Quilt-Cam we talked about having a hand-crank night – and I think tonight is a great night to do it.
You might think it is difficult to steer with one hand while turning the hand crank with the other, but just like working the treadle with your feet, you get used to it.
1910 Serata hand-crank machine.
Paper piecing is a great way to get used to cranking with the right hand and steering fabric with the left --- there is a line to sew on, it’s easy to be accurate, and the seams are short.
If you are just learning to work a hand-crank or have wanted to try one, this might be the project for you!
I am sewing 2” cornerstones for my Cheddar Sampler quilt---still in progress, with one leg half in the time-out box, and one leg out!
Click the free patterns tab at the top of the blog for the 2” square in a square foundations and information on how to correctly print them.
I need at LEAST 47 cornerstones. So far..I have 23. You can see that I have pinned two bundles of 10 together – it makes them easy to count that way.
Bobbin winder disengaged.
I will likely need to wind a bobbin sometime during Quilt-Cam. I only have ONE bobbin for this machine – I haven’t stopped to locate any others ---one is sufficient for now. To wind, I will swivel that rubber wheel up against the hand wheel so it engages like this:
Bobbin Winder Engaged.
See the lion decal on the pillar? Love this machine!
We will go about an hour ---morning is going to come bright and early, but I’m in the mood to sew, aren’t you?

I am making a Smokey Mtn. Stars out of cotton shirts...love the effect!

I'm working on a basket UFO on my new-to-me 1934 Featherweight. (By the way, I partially blame you for this new obsession about vintage machines!) :)
Are you feeling OK? You have lost weight. You look good but is everything OK?
What's the smallest crumb that you collect? I'm thinking back to Easy Street and trimming those geese. Now I'm working on strip piecing a lonestar. There's lot and lots of tiny triangles trimmed off the edge. Maybe someday they will all work into a crumb quilt. Thanks for the motivation!
It would be neat if you could get a "Google Glass" for QuiltCam - then we could see what you see!
We'll be up in the mountains in early November...glad to hear there will still be color! Folks loved the BH display at the show last week...25 BH inspired quilts!
This is the second live cam I have seen and so enjoy it. Tonight I am just a watcher. I was wondering two things. First, if I can ask how many machines do you have? Second, is there somewhere I can the pattern from the last mystery quilt? I love seeing everyone's version.
I converted one of my Bentwood machines toa hand crank since the knee control was missing with it. I figured our that it only worked with the Bobbin wheel by the spoked wheel. Nice to watch you in action. Thanks for sharing your time with us on Quiltcam. I'm sewing my 30 Blocks of Midnight Flight together- FINALLY!!!
Hi Bonnie,
Just watching you after working on talking turkey for a few hours. Love it. Question, the thread on your handcrank, do you have an insert in the spool? I have a spool of thread like that but need something to hold it better. Thanks for all you do, can't wait for this year's mystery! Rea from CNY
Hey Bonnie - I found a Singer 201 that I might go see tomorrow. If I go look, it will be a 2 hour bus ride each way. Lots of leaf peeping, time! Im making more paper pieced strings tonight. Thank you for quilt cam and using interesting old machines! Safe trip. ~Taffy.
Hi Bonnie from Halifax, U.K.! So there IS benefits to not being able to sleep!! (it's 2.45am here).
Great to see you in action in quilt cam, LOVE everything you do, you are such an inspiration, I follow you on FB too! Looking forward to joining in with your next mystery hopefully! Izy :D
Hi Bonnie, Julie from Bloomington, IL First time I am able to watch you live. Kids are finally in bed. I have several quilts started and need to finish....LOL Love your old machine - I remember watching my mom on a peddle one. You are such an inspiration and Thank You for taking time out of your busy schedule. Have a safe trip on your next adventure.
You should be able to get the bobbin winder part from Cindy Peters (Treadleon member) at stitchesintime@earthlink.net.

Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed Quilt-Cam tonight. It's been a long time and it was a great way to leave the stress behind and sew along with you. As Melena said above, I hope you're feeling OK. Thanks for putting yourself out there for everyone. Have a safe trip.
Bonnie,
Updated my quilt journal while watching you tonight. Saw the problem you had making a bobbin. Easy fix might be a wide rubber band on the wheel. Good luck

Bonnie, thank you for being REAL! When you sew off the line or have troubles getting something to work the way you want it, you help us who are much less experienced feel much less frustrated when we have to re-do things or when they don't work the way we need them too. ( Please excuse my runnnnn on sentence!) Thank you so much for quiltcam, your blog, your tutorials and just for being you. You are a born teacher as I saw for myself at the Verona Antique Mall. Travel safe and I'll look forward to your next Quiltcam and of course the Mystery Quilt!
Yes, those chubby threads need something -- I use an empty aurifil spool (the orange plastic thing) and stick it up into those chubby threads!
Hey!! So happy to see you -- and have a great trip....leaf peeping in Maine sounds wonderful! Our colors haven't happened here yet...
Hi Bonnie enjoy your web cam its taken me all this time to finally get onto the live blog and see it. I used to have a hand crank and wish I hadn't got rid of it. Thanks for doing this. So want to do a scrap quilt.
Thanks Lori! That dang bobbin winder! I think the rubber tire is just old and not gripping...
Sounds beautiful, Subee!!
Just a bit tired...but no weight lost that I know of! Thanks for your concern :)
Smallest crumb would be triangles from 2-1/2" squares....stuff like that.
YAY!!! Where are you going to be? Asheville? Boone??
Sad to say, I was sleeping while you were running quilt cam. I have missed seeing you. You look very well! Being home for a while is doing you good. I'm sewing a flannel quilt for my DD & am using the border as a leader/ender project... now that I know what a leader/ender project is. lol. I'll send you a photo, when I'm sorted. Enjoy your next teaching round. Happy trails & thank you for all this :D

I had issues getting my IPad to start when Quiltcams started so I waited for the upload. I too have bobbin issues with eve my newest machine getting the thread to load evenly. Loved to watch you wind the long bobbin. Currently none of my Vintage machines take one of those, I must admit I shy away from them probably because I don't think I can learn to wind them.
So much fun to see you using the hand crank!
I love quilt cam and was so disappointed to miss tonight. I hope you'll host another soon.
Hiya Bonnie!
Thank you so very much for posting Nann's note to me and then the link to my blog. I am SO excited that you are FINALLY getting discovered up here in the North country!!! I think that horrible weather (very hot and humid) summer workshop that you gave in Vermont the year before last really broke the ice. Good for you!!!!
Love ya,
Vic in NH
Thanks for showing us a hand crank sewing machine. I had not seen how to wind the bobbin. Even though you didnt have an easy time winding the bobbin, I found it very interesting to see how it all worked. Love Quilt Cam!
Hi Bonnie, I have 55 crumb strips blocks of 4 made, waiting to see what we are making with these. A few quilt cam's ago...So much fun using scraps on phone book papers.Addicting*
Hi Bonnie, I also wanted to Thank You for the Ikea Lamp idea. With your post. Have 2 here now, and I Love Love Love the bright light! Best lamp ever for sewing!
