A Tale of Four Stitches!

It happened like THIS:

“Mom!  Could you PLEASE remember to shut the back door on the van???”

And my response:

“Why? Did you back into it??”

And Jeff said…
“No!  I walked into it – head on!”

OH goodness!  He was holding  paper towel to his forehead and I could see he was bleeding.

I begged him to let me check it despite his protests of “It’s okay, it’s not that bad, the bleeding is almost stopped….”  ((These are not comforting words to any mother’s ears, no matter if your son is 3 years old or 23 years old!))

Nope.  It’s gaping.  At the hairline --- there is no way to butterfly this, or to use  skin glue or anything else….this has GOT to have stitches.  ((He still didn’t believe me but got in the car ----))

It was 4:30 pm and our regular doctor’s office would be closing soon, if not closed already so the choice was made to go to the local urgent care place instead.

Jeff 002

Yea, he looks a little bit embarrassed….not only about the fact that he ran into the back of an open door on his mom’s minivan --- but that I’m taking pictures of him in the lobby of Primecare…LOL

Jeff 003

I think by the time they took him to the triage room and ooh’d and ahh’d and asked him when his last tetanus shot was it dawned on him that he was wrong and I was right!

Jeff 006

Of course his doctor came in laughing when he heard what Jeff had done and told him that he was going to have to come up with a better story to tell the girls than “I ran into the back open door of mom’s minivan!”  and he could make it a good story.  Chicks dig scars, and everything, right?

If you are squeamish – don’t look at the next photo!!

Jeff 007

The doc did a pretty good job!  Not quite 10 stitches to the inch, but it won’t be hardly noticeable by the time it is healed.

As for me??

Jeff 005

Knowing this could take a while, I grabbed the “emergency binding project” on our way out the front door!  I, however, am stitching much closer and much smaller, I don’t want my binding gaping like that wound!

Jeff 008

Yes.  This is the smile of a kid who walked smack dab full force into the open back door of his mom’s minivan!  And since *I* left the door open, it is MY fault ---and I’ll take the blame, because I hate to see him hurting ----we will be laughing and joking about this in no time.

I’m off to Georgia this morning ---stay tuned for more adventures from the road!

Oh, and before I forget --- I need to pass on to you that Colorado Lady is having Yard Sale Saturday, TOMORROW!  Not sure what happened with the other yard sale Saturday last week, it could be that I got the dates mixed up ---and my link went awry, but THIS TIME --- it's a happenin'!  So book mark yourself a message to head over to Colorado Lady's BLOG tomorrow!

Your son is such a cutie - and somehow I think you will have learned your lesson to close the van door!

Don't take this wrong but I am laughing...(not at Jeff's injury, feel better soon Jeff)...but I am not sure which is more funny - Jeff being the son of a blogger and having each life detail put out in cyberspace for all to see - or the fact that you had the presence of mind to grab the stitching on the way out the door. lolol Have a great trip to GA and enjoy the process. Looking forward to trips to the antique malls for you...

LOL!!! Sorry for laughing, but is a funny story. At least he is smiling too...glad he is ok. Yes..I think if you did the stitching on his head it may have taken 10 times longer...Smaller stitches..and perfection which takes time...lol

So glad everything turned out ok and Jeff will have a very funny story to tell. Have a great trip. Stay warm and stay safe. Thanks for all that you do.

What a cutie! And so sweet to let you 'blog' about him! Hope it heals quickly....

So cute that you blogged about Jeff's "stitches" - not quilting stitches this time. Your son is a nice looking young man and has your sweet smile, Bonnie. Safe travels to Georgia. I'll be following along with you.

Glad Jeff is okay. The doctor is right..he needs a better story...

My DH was throwing a piece of roofing tin on the barn, it hit a tree limb and came back and hit him in the forehead. ER trip, they cleaned it, glued it and glued the nurses glove to his head, pulled hard and you guess it. SNAP and the gloved popped him in the head. Now he has a corrugated scar..lol. He is my AFLAC cash cow....haha.

Same thing happened to our son Ransom last year!! Except in his case he walked under the open back hatch to the land cruiser just like he always had...but having shot up from 5'11 to 6'3, he didn't quite clear it, hahaha. Your son is cute. Reminds me of that actor Dax Shepard, when he was younger.

Jeff is so handsome, even with the wound and the smirk! So is that doctor! woowoo! Is that your cheddar bowtie? We still haven't see a pic of that all laid out! puuleasseee, can we, can we?

Glad he's going to be ok! Doc is right, need a good story. I had casts on both feet as a teen to immobilize them for a few weeks while my tendons tried to heal. Nothing broken, so no good story there. Made up a few stories, told different people different things. The one I liked the most was "I was barefoot waterskiing and I hit a log" but the one that stuck, due to the simplicity (and one my girlfriend started, not me) was "she was hit by a truck" :D

Donna said...

Oh no! Can't believe that happened! (But truthfully, I could see something like that happening around here when all the kids were still home). Doc did a nice job on the stitches, but not nearly as nice as your quilting. Lol! Have a safe trip. (Jeff, so sorry for your run in with Mom's van. Hope it doesn't ouch too much.)

What a handsome young man you have there! This made me smile bz it brought back memories of when I helped the doctor stitch up my husband's head from a work injury! Good times, lol! No, I'm not a nurse but year's ago I trained as a medical assistant. The ER was hopping busy when I mentioned to the doctor my past work history. He asked if I wanted to help suture him and so I did! Maybe the fact my husband doesn't have a scar where we stitched him up is is why he supports my sewing habits, lol!

lol, Jeff is a sweetie pie! my sons would have driven themselves to the urgent care, and come home much later with a hat and a box of ice cream, and said absolutely nothing! no way they would have let me blog about it! lol, hope you both heal quickly. the emotional scars of motherhood. have a safe trip!

LOL. Hope he feels better soon! Like the idea of the emergency project...I wouldn't have even thought of that :-). LOL

What a good looking young man, it sounds like he handled a stressful situation with grace and humor. Way to go! That was quite a gash! I'm also impressed that Bonnie had ready to go and took a project to work on while she waited! Impressive!

LOL I can hear the moaning of "but Mom it's ok" Our 30 yr old fainted and banged his forehead on the edge of dining room table. In taking care of him DH noticed blood along hairline and they cleaned it up , then Mom enters picture. I looked said needs stitched, nope says son took care of it. This time I put on my "big Mom panties " and said OK you are an adult, and went about breakfast. Can you see the "I told you so smile on my face"! 30 minutes later he is on his way to ER bleeding would not stop, came home with staples. Oh did I mention it was Thanksgiving when Dr office is closed. No matter what the age the adventures never end. Jeff has the same sweet smile his Momma has, heal quick Jeff. Have a safe trip Bonnie.

Oh, dear, he really did a good job on that, didn't he? I did that once - on my own door! Trying to do too many things at once with small kids... Have a great trip!

heee - my daughter had as much fun snapping shots of me when I got my last stitches a couple months ago. Your son sure is handsome - add that dashing scar (as it will become soon enough), and he'll be SMASHING. :D

That is so funny!!!

That boy doesn't need a scar to impress the girls! He's a good looking kid! And very indulgent of his mom's photographing the process! I hope you took him out for ice cream afterwards ;)

What a cute son you have! Now, Mom! close the mini van door! ha ha

Nice straight seam! Tell him to watch where he's walking next time... yes I have kids and yes we have visited urgent care. They liked a popscicle after the damages were rectified. Those medical folks are the best. :-)

You were absolutely right - can't have that handsome face marred! LOL My son, at six years of age ran into another kid with a harder head at school. They called. I came and took him to the ER where he got 9 stitches across his eyebrow. Later in the week I had taken him shopping with me and the lady at the register asked him what happened. His answer? "My Mom hit me." She looked at me like I was a monster. When we got outside I asked him why??? He said that he thought it would be funny. Sons! A never-ending adventure!

He is SOOOO cute! And, he looks sweet.~

Does the poor kid know he has hundreds of women all over the world who feel his pain?

I still think he needs to meet my 22yo dd...told you this in Indy. Maybe I want you as dd's inlaw SO bad. She quilts! LOL!

OH, my now 20yo son fell off a rocking horse on springs when he was 4yo and has quite a scar on his forehead from it. When girls ask him how he got the scar his answer is, "a horseback riding accident"!

Your first response is something we Moms would say LOL. Glad he no worse for wear.

LOL, I showed his picture to my 16yo teen dd who replied, "Oh, my goodness, he looks like Mr. Tumnis" (from Narnia movies), and "every girl LOVES Mr. Tumnis 'cause he's so CUTE"

He and you are adorable. Glad he's doing OK .... and PLEASE Mom .. close the van door! LOLOL It's always Mom's fault! Safe trip.

Poor baby...bet he doesn't feel too embarrassed for the photos when everyone thinks he's so cute! I think it's pretty funny how many people want to fix him up with someone 😉

Jan said...

neat suturing, poor boy. if he uses moisturiser or bio oil about two weeks after sutures come out and massage the scra with the bio oil or moisturiser it will help flatten the scar out. we advise all our maxillo facial patients to do that with scars and it makes a big difference to scars, especially on the face. I hope they gave him a bravery certificate lol. Looking forward to seeing the front of the quilt Bonnie. x

Poor thing! At least he had a smile when it was all said and done. And you had me LOL when I saw your pic. Always ready with a project! I LOVE IT! I'm the same way! Safe travels, Bonnie.

Wowza on the stitches, but love how you were able to get in some stitches while he was getting his! Enjoy Georgia--I lived in Hinesville for nine months. BEAUTIFUL though humid!

Bonnie, in December my husband was loading our van, and reached down to grab a bag, totally in the dark at 0530 in the morning, and loading the car, he hit the side of his head, and it caused him to have 9 stitches in his ear. He was headed to Panama, and had to re-schedule his plane flight. He finally got where he was going, and now his ear is completely healed, and you cannot tell he even had this wide gaping gash across his ear. Anyway, this really reminded me of this incident. Hope Jeff heals quickly and his hairline will hide it nicely. See you later, and Happy Quilting.

OUCH!!
Mum always knows best don't you. Even if we do forget to close doors.
We do know when they need more medical attention than they think they might. Hope the scar fades completely otherwise he will have to invent a better story than I ran into the open door of mum's minivan!

I'm nauseous just looking at those stitches! My daughter was 3 when she was dancing and came up under me, just as I bent over to pick up corners on a blanket I was folding. The lights went OUT! Six stitches on the inside corner of my eyebrow. The doctor said she would have split my eyelid open if I'd tilted my head just a tad bit more. Just don't laugh at him, if you catch him throwing his hands up to guard his head, for a while, after all this!! Poor thing!

Beth said...

He is such a cutie! (Ok tell him handsome). It did make me grin that you remembered to grab some binding as you went off to Urgent Care.

And Jeff wouldn't let you sew him up? Maybe tape a piece of seam binding over it to hide the edges? I think the Dr needs a few lessons. I'm a retired nurse and am sure he'll barely have a scar after 8 months. Be sure to keep sunscreen on it after it heals and the line will fade. Does the van door need a bandaid? There's a local barn here with a giant metal painted Bandaid where a car slid into it. You'll think of your son every time you close the van door. My poor Dad used to bonk his head every time he went downstairs and finally wrote in big red letters "DUCK STUPID" on the offending beam.
