What I want from you is a comment on this post telling me what you would like to piece into your next project….be it a word, a date, a phrase, anything. If you could make your next quilt speak, what would it say?

And oh yeah…did I ever tell you that I have a lead foot? Yep. Speeding Ticket. I swear I couldn’t have been going THAT fast…I was just following the lead of the truck in front of me…but evidently I was. What can I say for myself? I hadn’t driven a car in over 17 days. Maybe I forgot how to read the speedometer? 
There was no talking myself out of this one, and what makes it worse is that I was on the phone with DH when the lights were flashing behind me…so I had to tell HIM right then too. $171.00. I am not a happy camper! ((PS...I have bluetooth in my car, believe me BOTH hands were on the wheel at the time!))
So maybe this give-away is just what I need to get this ticket off my mind!

The words I'm going to piece into a quilt.

It's a border for a sampler quilt made with the focus fabric of cows in a field of poppies -- some standing, some lieing down.

Ooops the same thing happened to me not too long ago. Thankfully, the state trooper took pity on me and shaved a couple of miles off the clocked speed. I still got a $75 fine.
What I would say on my quilt? Hope. My father-in-law just got diagnosed with cancer and my next quilt is for him. So he can stay warm and cosy while he has to go through all the treatments we hope will beat the horrible disease.
I love baby quilts with the baby's name quilted into it, so maybe that will be my next baby quilt. I also love fabric with words already on it and I think it would be fun to use word fabric to make the words!

I have a couple of phrases I would like to add to a quilt, but I think if it were my first word quilt it would be my grandaughters names and birthdates in a throw for their mom. It would also have to have the words joy, wonder and love. These words are used by my daughter to describe her relationship with her daughters.
I would say come on spring! I am tired of shoveling snow and ice in PA!
welcome home!~ I found out my nephew accepted a job a the college in Winston Salem. I will be going to visit him sometime in the summer. we just may run into each other. he is in elizabeth city right now and he leaves this sunday. Im sending a quilt with him to remind him of home. (mauh) Liz

Sorry to hear about the speeding ticket, what a bummer. Tonya's book looks sooooooo........ cool it would be fun to win a copy but maybe when I have a little money I can order a copy plus both your books at the same time. Postage is the killer when ordering from overseas, I know it is a long way to Australia.
Mine would say, Maui,Hawaii, since I am visiting for the first time in my life and have driven around the entire island. I can't wait to get started on the quilt when I get home.

Not sure what word or phrase I would put in a quilt. Probably "Joy". This is the year I am going to concentrate on joy in my life.
Ouch on the ticket! I once left a policeman standing in the middle of the road... I was late picking up my youngest daughter from Basketball practice & the coach didn't wait for all of them to be picked up, he just locked up - it was winter :/ So.... lead foot it up the hill, got stopped, as he got out of his vehicle I yelled "Follow me up the hill I have to get my kid before she freezes!!", and took off pedal to the medal! She didn't freeze, he followed, I didn't get a ticket, only because I think he was floored that I actually did that to him! He was trying not to laugh during his safety speech :D
I have been trying to do words on a quilt. The quilt is done (all in material that has music notes on it) Just blocks with blocks in the middle kinda like a rag quilt sorta. It is a first for me to try words (I rarely try anything other then squares)and I am failing miserably in my attempts using youtube as a tutorial! Most would not "get" (or would be offended) by what I want to make into words.. It is a song by Pink - about being perfect - so music notes and the title of the song is what I am trying to do for my middle daughter... the song has meaning to us together. We first heard it as she was creating her own wings and moving into the big world on her own. She has CMT (Charcott-Marie-Tooth Syndrome which is a muscle and nerve degenerative disease), I was having a hard time seeing her as an independent semi-adult & was worried about her future, etc.. It was not fun "letting go" and I was battling my "you are" with her "I am"... but no matter what... she is and always will be.......... F'n Perfect to me!!(<-- nice way of putting the title)

Not sure if this'll work. This book looks perfect for my friend who quilts "outside the box" she just does what she feels like...no rules and makes a great quilt.
I've been asked to create a memory quilt for a widow from her husband's shirts (thanks for the great ideas, Bonnie!). Think I'll suggest incorporating words recalling pleasant things they shared, like "walk in springtime," "birthday roses" or "our three sons." It might be nice to also use a couple pieces of her clothing that he especially liked so that the memories will also be about them together.

I have a mother daughter quilt in mind for my mom. I have some of her clothes from her childhood and some of my old clothes..planning to use some pictures and maybe some crazy patch hearts for the old clothes.. I think it would be nice to include some words on this special quilt.... I hope to get it done by mothers day
My favorite cousin's husband is dying of cancer. It is such a sad time for the family. I would like to make a quilt for her with some inspiring words in it. The book would really help.

A friend of mine in the US Virgin Islands lost a family friend and his son today...they were murdered. My friend's husband was murdered 10 yrs ago and I would like to make her a quilt that says "Peace" in many languages.
So sorry about your ticket. I just missed getting a ticket not too long ago. I was driving this back road with 4-lanes at night, paying no attention to the odometer because there were no other cars on the road - except for a police car sitting at the side with his lights off. Bless his heart, he gave me a warning!
I've never done words on a quilt before but I would like to try. My husband asked me the other day if I sign my quilts. No, but maybe it would work to use small letters on the back to make my name. Sounds just perfect! (If you send me the book or I buy it.)

I really needed Tonya's book last month when I made a wall hanging for my cousin to hang on the wall of her kennels (she owns and runs an animal kennel) with the name of the kennels on it.
I'd still like to make quilts for my grandchildren with each of their names on them.
I would say "Welcome baby boy" to my first grandchild, due later this month.

I'm working on a black and gold Saints quilt for my son who moved from Louisana to Indiana a few months ago. He's so homesick and cold! The top is made of Louisiana Pinwheel blocks, appliqued Fleur-de-Lis blocks, and some plain blocks with Louisiana themed fabric. For the inside border, I'm planning to write the words "Who dat? Who dat? Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints? Oh when the Saints go marching in...oh when the Saints go marching in..." (OK, so we got beat this season, but maybe next year the Saints will be back on top!)
Not sure about a specific project. Possibly using my kids names, or for my oldest a quilt that describes him and his likes. It's hard to make quilts for boys. Another possibility is " Okinawa". We lived in Okinawa, JP for 3 years, miss that place dearly. I made an Okinawa Memory Quilt with a neighbor's church. The word could break up some of the ornate decoration on the Japanese fabric.
I am sure it would be words of hope for a cancer patient as I give many of my quilts to them as my daughter has also had cancer. Love Tonya and have used her word tutorial when it was on your site.

I reckon I have so many UFO's that the next one I finish I would like to put the words FINISHED into the backing fabric ... in fact I am piecing a backing for a nice little scrappy Batik fabric quilt ... putting the word FINISHED into the backing fabric would just make it wonderful!

Hey Bonnie, That ticket is a bummer! I also have a lead foot and the only way I've been able to cure myself is to use the cruise control as often as I remember!
I really would like to make each of my children a quilt with their names and a few words special to each of them in the border. I have three children and each border will be different. I've thought about this quilt for years, and they keep getting older. Why do they keep doing that? Darn them kids!

I'd like to piece "Yellow Fish Rule!" into a quilt for my daughter. When she was little and having trouble fitting in, I used the analogy about school being like a fish tank and when most fish are red or green, it's hard to stand out as the only yellow fish. But as time went on, she would get into bigger tanks...middle school, high school, college, life....and there would be more fish of her color. I've got a quilt started with the fish, but I really need help with the letters! The other thing I want to do is make a quilt with an applique depicting my daughter as a girl scout and sew on all her badges (some that I never got done.) The border of the quilt will say, "Finally, my mom sewed ALL my badges!"

Yes, I do want to say a few words in a quilt. Actually: the word love in 8 languages for the quilt I am making for my friends' daughter. It will keep het warm during chemo and further. I will include it in stitching in the border.

Re words on a quilt I would say "The sun will come up tomorrow" and give the quilt to my sister who has been flooded in the recent floods in Australia

Right now I am handquilting names of my DDs family on the backs of 2 quilts she will be getting hopefully within the month (sewing mach. getting spa treatment). Would love to have this book so I can (at least!) scatter names and dates on future quilts, back or front.... plan on making 52 week & 365 day journal quilts for my children's families.. this would be fun to put on the borders...
opps about the speeding ticket! I had a fabric called "Angels watching over me" but the selvage was too narrow to use as a strip in a quilt, if only I knew how to do those letters I could put it in my next one! That book woul be really useful to that end.

I plan a quilt for the teachers of my sons. The first one will get the quilt while my son is going to the next school and the second teacher will go to retirement in August. So two farewell quilts I have to sew :-)))
And I think I will write the name of the classes or the dates or somethimg like that in the quilts.

If I was lucky enough to win Tonya's very cool book, I'd piece this quote: "A cup of coffee shared with a friend is happiness tasted and time well spent." And put a border of wonky coffee cups as a border, or maybe interspersed throughout the quilt.
I would love to make a quilt with some of my three year old daughters funny phrases like a scrap book quilt for our own. It could be more like a signature quilt where I can keep adding the phrases. It would be a fun way to remember her childhood phrases when she gets older.

I have 2 grandchildren a boy and a girl and have thought about the old poem, " snips and snails" to piece in the border.
My next word themed quilt may be: "When you're going over the top, keep going!" But I do not need a copy of Tonya's book, and mine is the alphabet sampler front and center in your photo group above!

I'd like to letter the name of the baby into a quilt, I'm waiting for the birth, so I'll just make the whole quilt except for the last block, then work the name into it!
If you don't ever speed, you won't get that ticket and be buying something you can't eat or wear! Also you'll never be looking over your sholder with the fear of getting caught.

I would piece a line of the lyrics from a favoritwe song of mine (it would be in Dutch). Also I like to do a quotes quilt, with some lines for peiceful living.

It happ[ens to all of us at one time or another. I would love to read the book. I tried the instructions from your website quite a while ago and found the letters fun. I could use some inpirational words on my sewing room wall- dream, believe, achieve.
I remember the first time the RCMP pulled me over when I was driving home from Halifax to Bridgewater when I lived IN NS. I was in my own little element with the music on and munching on chips while driving the 1 hour ride on the highway. Sigh.. they too didn't let me get away with it.... $150 later. My one and only ticket. HOpe to keep it that way!

I'm making a "Names of Jesus" quilt with 30 blocks representing the different names of Jesus. I would put each name on the back of the corresponding blocks.

I have been thinking for a while now about making a quilt with the words that relate to our farm and family life. Something to snuggle on the couch with. Like....horse, barn, hay, flowers, chickens, pond, stuff like that.

I've been thinking for some time of inserting positive words and phrases into my quilts, sometimes almost hidden and other times the main event, but have only tried it once - in applique. Tonya's book would be such a help in bringing this from day dream to reality.
I am currently working on a Double 4-patch and thought the recipient's name would be a great addition on the back of the quilt. I have so much fun doing those words.

I think these words are too cool. I am making a baby quilt and think I'd enjoy putting the quilt name (haven't come up with that yet) and the date ---- or maybe even my "brand" and use all this as the back of the quilt. That way she'll have two quilts for one!!

Sorry about your ticket! You may be able to attend a driver improvement course to keep the ticket off your driving history (and thus keep your insurance from going up!) Call your local Circuit Court Clerk to see if there is a school near you. Usually 1/2 day on a Saturday or one evening. Well worth it! And yes, it is MUCH worse when hubby tells you "I told you to slow down!"!

Last time I was stopped I was speeding because of being on the phone. Got out of it because hubby was a county sheriff's deputy. No specific words planned, but just would love to see if there any new techniques to be learned!

As for a word play quilt... I'd put "Get High" on the border of a quilt for my son. He's a pole vaulter, so I am a parent who actually likes it when his kid "Gets High"!
Looks like a great option for "teen age" quilts, since it is like impossible to think of ideas for that age group.

I'm working on a signature quilt and have already named it Circle of Friends. That would be fun to put across the top.
My quilt would say "Just for the piece of it". It goes with my blog and what quilting means to me right now.

I think it would be nice to quilt words of encouragement, inspiration and hang them with appliqued items on them. Also, I would like to do a military tribute to my husband. I could make up scrappy patches to resemble his ribbons he was awarded during his years of service and I think that would look fabulous, but I would like for it to say his name, rank, and service. That would be very special to me.
Bonnie - I think that lead foot came from eating all those delicious, spicy foods in Louisiana!!ha!

You are super busy, yes, but you are not Super Woman, and the speeding ticket was a not-so-gentle reminder to try to take life a little easier and take care of yourself. Words in a project - I would want them to be inspirational, reflecting life's blessings and how we should treat others. ~karen

Uuuh, that hurts! A lot of money for a little speeding - it's cheaper here in Germany and people complain anyway! And they are even allowed to go faster!

I am working on a Sinterklaas quilt and it might be fun to sew some words in Dutch around it, like zwarte piet, pepernoten, marsepein etc...
I do yoga and I've been thinking about doing a pillow with the Om symbol (in Sanskrit) appliqued on the top. I've already quilted the symbol into one quilt, I may do it more often.

I got a written warning once on my way home from Quilt Guild about 9:30pm -- "Where are you two coming from?" he asked. "Quilt Guild!" He talked to us for 10 minutes before writing the warning as his mom is a quilter too! And I was speeding and talking to my friend about all the beautiful quilts, just so excited about quilts... let my foot get heavy!
I would love to make a baby quilt with the baby's name and the family names like Mom and Dad and grandpa and grandma, brother, sister.... I think that would be a great shower gift!

Wow over 120 comments. That's a lot of talking quilts. My quilt would express "Contentment". I was gone from my home for 4 years taking care of my Dad who passed away in February 2010. It has taken me until now to feel comfortable in my own home and in my life again. The "Contentment" quilt would celebrate my love for my family and home.

Hmmm, I would like to make a "Florida" quilt, with beach fabrics and scenes, and add words to it. Something bright and cheerful.
My last speeding ticket was the result of an asthma attack... between trying to breathe and keeping the car in my lane... somehow, watching the speed didn't happen.
I am thinking about putting DREAM on my WIP quilt... has a special meaning to me.
I have sooooooooo many quilts I HAVE to make right now, none of them with names, but I do see some in my future!! My first one would probably be a baby quilt, with the name of the baby and words like sweet dreams, hugs, kisses, etc!
And so sorry 'bout your ticket! Bummer! I was stopped by a female La. State Trooper who started writing out a speeding ticket and she asked me if I realized how fast I was going, and I didn't really, and wasn't going to make up any excuses. We chatted back and forth and before I knew it she had changed my speeding ticket into a "no seatbelt ticket (BTW, I was wearing one) So, I went from getting a $180 ticket to a $20 ticket!! I've since shaved a little lead off my foot! LOL!!!!

I would like to create a quilt using the word "lana."
I just went to a retreat where were we were talking about being obsessively pickey about our work.... there's a word for that. The instructor reversed the word and came up with Lana. I think I need a quilt to remind me to let things go.
Sorry about the ticket. I have a similar picture, but it was of the Indiana State Police! I was lucky to get a warning, but was told, "you have to slow down, mam!" Anyways, with the blizzard hitting hard in our area of WI, I was in the sewing room using your Weed Whacker pattern. It's done and I think Blizzard in the border will say it all!!

I've been trying to design a manly type quilt for my boyfriend and I would love to piece "I luv u" on the back corner. If I don't win then I'm probably going to have to find it somewhere so i can learn how to do it (otherwise I'll just be writing with a permanant marker... again! hahaha)

March 19, 2011; Pride, Faith, and Love. My son will be honored at his Eagle Court of Honor on that date. He was diagnosed with Autism at 9 months leaving us to wonder what his future would hold.
At 15 he entered college, at 17 he earned his Eagle Scout rank, at 18 (May 2011) he will earn his Associates degree, in the Fall he is off to four year school.
We still worry about his future, but the worries are the same as every other parent.
On March 19, I will be filled with these words I should piece into his quilt...pride, faith and love!
I would like to make a quilt of the sayings that my mom (who has passed away) used to say. Example: I don't know whether I'm pitching or catching! Meaning I am SO busy.
My son asked me to make an alphabet quilt for my granddaughter. Of course!!
I love to put words on my quilts, this book looks like it would be wonderful to learn techniques and ways to use lettering in my pieces.
I am the opposite, I drive too slow, lol. The thought of paying that much for a ticket, hurts, think of all the fabric we could buy, lol.

I'm sorry about the ticket. I got one a few years ago. My college-aged daughter was with me and spilled the beans to DH right away. Of course, he is way worse and gets one about every two years. He got one this summer in Kansas while we were on vacation and driving from Colorado towards our daughter's in Illinois.
This book looks really great! I'd love to win it. I would probably make quilts for my 4 little granddaughters with their names on them and maybe some loving sentiment.

I would put three words in my quilt "Strength", "Faith" and "Prayers" because I'm needing a lot of them these days, raising three teenagers.
I want a wallhanging that says "Don't get it perfect, just get it done!" for hubby. He is an ADD perfectionist and needs 'gentle' reminders!

I've attempted my own letters last month and added a 'Vermont' to the bottom of my guild challenge quilt. I'm currently working with some leftover blue/white triangles and making them into scrappy white stars surrounded by blues. I'd like to add the words 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' as that is the song my 2 kids (3YO on Superbowl Sunday and the other is 22 months) get before naps and bedtime.
The building I live in is a two apartment house. Our good friends live in the apartment below us and we take turns cooking and hosting diners. We are all very close and have had many good times here! They will be moving in next fall I would love to make a going away quilt for them with our address, 70 Mechanic St.

Sorry to hear about the ticket! My folks got pulled over on their way outta town the day I got married... they were soo busy talking about the wedding etc... that they didn't realize they were speeding! Good thing that there was no drinking at the reception! LoL.... The officer saw that they had just been busy talking and didn't give them a ticket!
Sorry... at least you weren't texting or holding the cell phone! Just average it out over how many years (if any) since your last ticket... and it won't feel quite sooo bad!

Sorry about your ticket - I got one a couple of years ago and had to go to "Criminal School" - Defensive Driving! The down side was that it took a day but the up side was that the ticket did not go on my driving record and I got a 15% discount on my auto insurance!!! Anyway, good luck!

I love this book, I read Tonya's blog and have watched her as she put this together. If I win I want to put the name of the person who the quilt is for in the quilt some place or on the back. That way they always know it's theirs. We have a friend who was recently paralyzed and I've been thinking about a lap quilt for him.
I am principal's secretary at an elementary school and I would piece together our character ed words like wisdom, integrity,altuism, service etc... and enlist the help of the staff and kids using their handpints in the quilt. Very bright and colorful. I can't wait to take your class in Fort Worth in a couple of weeks! See you soon!

I'd like to make a quilt to give to the class I teach to raise money to go to their convention. I teach nursing at a college. So... I would like to put the name of the college on the quilt and make a log cabin pictoral of the school as the center. Kind of ambitious huh? I dream big.

The pattern shows names of different ski resorts appliqued aound the border, how much fun would it be with the wonkyness of those wordplay books ... hmm ... I wonder.
