And it keeps the gravel from sinking down into the dirt and mud. Takes years and years to break down, I think the terrible carpet that we put under her gravel has been there about 25 years now, and the need to regravel has dropped way down! If I don't run the dehumidifer, a very thin film of moisture can collect on the surface of the laminate, but it can be mopped away easily. As long a puddles of water are clean up there shouldn't be a problem. The floor could warp. I think flooring stores just want to protect themselves from customers who installed the floor incorrectly. If you put down a vapor barrier, the floor will be just fine. I've had laminate in my basement for many years and it still looks new. We have a very dry basement though and we run the dehumidifier often.
