Father’s Day, 2016!

fathersday1
This is going to be a very short post, as I switch gears and pay attention to my family today after being gone for a week!

I arrived home last evening, landing in Greensboro pretty much on schedule, being met by The Hubster.  We headed right out to celebrate an early Father’s Day dinner as he is leaving for New York on business today, on Father’s Day.

His job keeps him hopping as much as mine, and it just turns out that my little break when we could both be home at the same time is very short this time around.

Come to think of it, I worked Mother's Day as well.  It's just kind of how things roll around here.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the men in my life who are great examples of fatherhood.  My dad holds my heart.  Oh, there were times growing up when all I wanted to do was hole up in my bedroom with a book and have the world leave me alone.  But he would draw me out, include me, make me participate in whatever we were doing, and I am oh, so much better for it.

Someone said, that if a child doesn’t hate you from time to time, you aren’t doing this parenting thing right.  He did it right!

Wishing my dad a very Happy Father's Day! I love that no matter how old I get, he always answers the phone "hello, beautiful daughter!"

Behind every child who believes in his/her self is a parent who believed in them first. Thanks for believing in me, Dad!

I have 5 younger brothers. Two from my mom’s first marriage to my dad, and 3 half-brothers from her second marriage.  But they are not half to me.  They are my brothers, through and through.

Watching these men love their wives, love their children and even step children and grandchildren as their own is inspiring.  I love them more as I watch them love their families.  Such great men.

Mark & Sharolyn in Paris!

For those who have asked how my brother is doing post brain cancer, he and his lovely wife Sharolyn are doing great and are in Europe on a second honeymoon right now.  I am SO grateful that he has had this outcome, that the cancer is behind him, that he is well and healthy and happy.  He is an amazing father, and I love him so much.  He is my younger brother by 3 years, but he has taught me more than he will ever know.

And to my own hubby –One of the things I love about being home is the camaraderie that exists between father and son under my own roof.  My sons are who they are because of how their father loved them. He was gentle when I was overbearing.  He was stronger when I was weak. My sons have grown into wonderful men because of who their father is.

This time of life, with adult sons is so precious, and so rewarding.  It's not perfect by any means, but I want to grab on to it and hold on to it as long as I can, these boys turned men.

So this morning, I’m spending time with family.  Missing the ones who are far away, loving the ones that are close at hand, and honoring everything that the word FATHER sums up.

  5. I had a great father, he wasn't perfect, which is what made him so great. He was tough, and sometimes hard. He expected a lot out of us, had no boys to help, so we girls learned all kinds of things. He was a drywall man, and we slept on the job almost as often as we were able to sleep in our beds. He was disabled at a very young age 56, he had a terminal heart condition. I lost him when he was only 64, I was 40. It has been 10 yrs, and I feel the loss more now than then.

  6. I love the way you write about your family. I got a little teary as I read it this morning. My Dad will be 90 in October and I am so thankful that he is still here and doing well. I hope to help him celebrate his Birthday with my 5 brothers. Plus I will be spending time with him this summer for a reunion of his family. He is the oldest of 11 and now the oldest living in his family. I am the oldest of 49 grandchildren. It should be a "big doins" as they say. I plan to stay with Dad for a few weeks and just enjoy spending time with him. We don't live near him but I try to spend some quality time with him when I can. Your boys are lucky to have you and your Hubby in their lives. Enjoy all that life holds! Hugs!!!

  7. Father's Day is always hard for me. I lost my dad 29 years ago ... on Father's Day. He had had surgery and we thought recovering but passed because of a stroke following the surgery. Within hours of his death my sister gave birth to her son ... I like to believe that when a soul is leaving its earthly bounds that it passes their wisdom to a new soul entering the world. My dad would have loved my nephew whose birthday we celebrate today rather than dwelling on the loss of one so loved. For those who still have their fathers please love and enjoy them while you can ... they are one of God's special gifts. Linda H

  9. I never knew who my Dad was, so I love reading other peoples stories about their relationships and wondering how mine could have been. Happy Fathers Day to all the one's who did right by their children :)

  10. Words that tell of love, family togetherness, and caring beyond anything else. Enjoy your short time together, a bit like birds in the nest, as one flies in to keep the babies warm, the other is off to fond their food.

  14. Very nice tribute to the father's/men in your life. I loved this quote and had to share it with my dad (step). It made him laugh too.
