  • Each month we have 4 or more products (Fabric, patterns, thread, or notions)

I think the thing that makes me feel the best, besides the fact that these are items I WILL use –is the knowledge that 5% of the proceeds go to help kids in need.

Make more quilts, cover kids with love. It’s all good!

Now that thing I was so excited about that I ran off mountain to get?

Best Easter Basket EVER!

This ad was in North Wilkesboro’s Craigslist listings.  Not far from here at all.  In fact, I’d been watching it for over a month because it was listed at much higher than this.

No nibbles.

Every time I checked back, there she was….and I would sigh, but the price was just too high.

Yesterday before I left for the cabin I saw the price had dropped and I pounced.  Emails were exchanged.

The gentleman needed an after work pick up because of his work schedule.  A meet and greet at Mc Donald's in Wilkesboro was arranged.  They have plugs at every booth along the walls for people with laptops..

Little did Mc D’s know that we’d be using that plug in to test a vintage sewing machine!

He said “The machine doesn’t sew.”

I checked the bobbin area and saw that the rocking finger was out of the slot on the underside of the needle plate.

“It WILL sew!” I said!  I know how to fix that!

The cord has one frayed spot, but that isn’t a problem.  Foot controllers and cords are plentiful around Quiltville.

I asked Aaron, the very young man (I’d guess middle 20s) the story behind the machine and he said “Well, it belonged to my great grandmother.  It’s been in storage for years.  I’m sorry about the musty smell…..”

I smiled to myself, knowing that musty smell that comes with featherweights and 301s and other vintage machines very well.

This one however, about knoccked me over when we opened the case! LOL!  It’s been stored somewhere damp for a long long time.

I haven’t plugged in the machine to start to clean it yet, but I already know that she will be named for Aaron’s great grannie Frances.

Welcome home, Frances, we are going to have a good time getting to know one another!

Cross that one off the “must find” list.  Bonnie has found her black 301 long bed and she is a beauty!

Have a great evening, everyone!

  2. I hope Aaron finds your blog and realizes that sewing machine went to a very good home where it can live a productive life.

  3. I have one just like it that I love. I would like to have a walking foot for it, but I have read that they do not make them anymore. At least one that fits correctly for the slant needle. Enjoy!

  4. Deborah,

Have you tried Jenny at Sew-Classic? She lists a slant shank walking foot. I've dealt with her, and she's reliable. I don't have a slant shank machine, so haven't tried this foot. But I love the straight-stitch short shank foot I got from her.

Check out singeronline.com. They have slant needle feet, including the "Even Feed" quilting foot. I was just looking last night.

  8. Congratulations on a great find. I have my eye on craigslist right now, too. A black 301a. Not a longbed though. No case either. Asking price is $150. I would pay that if there were a case. Not sure if I want it without a case. As Kevin mentioned when you were here, the 301 is scarce here so maybe I should jump for it.

  9. Congrats on the find. I also have a black 301 longbed and I would have never seen it if it weren't for my DH. We went to town for tractor parts and I saw a garage sale sign. Told him we had to go. He hates going to garage sales, but went around the block and we stopped. I almost had to drag him with a rope to get him out of the car. I was looking through a junk table and here he comes with this 301. OMG!! It was only $5.00. I could not believe it. No case, no cord or foot petal and the decals are worn, but for $5.00, I took my chances. I have a shortbed 301 so knew I would have a cord and foot petal (which I got at an estate sale-complete with case, cord, foot petal, manual-for $65.00)Love my 301's!!

I'd be interested in knowing what you do about the musty smell too. Please let us know!

  11. Please, how can the musty smell be gone?

  12. Sew happy for you! With a case, that's the icing on the cake! Enjoy sewing on her. Does she stay at the cabin, or going home? Can't wait to hear more about it.

  13. Patience is indeed a virtue. My herd of vintage machines is at its limit. The only one machine I would buy now is a black long bed also. I have a beige short bed 301 in a cabinet and love it! I would trade away my newer machines for a vintage one anyday!!!

  14. Love the new 301. Glad it found a awesome new home too. I have been looking at them a little bit. Is the difference in the 3 colors due to when they were made? Or just came in a variety of colors? A friend of mine got one and brought it to retreat a couple weeks ago, and it sewed really nice and fast. I have a couple featherweights, but think I would love a 301 much better. If I am going away somewhere to sew, I want to sew faster and get things done. Let me know about the different colors if anyone knows??? Curious.. Have a great day everyone. I am home with a head cold... blaugh........

  15. I'm not sure how it happened, but just yesterday a ran across a couple of blog posts of yours from 2012 talking about how to get rid of musty smells - one of the posts had many suggestions. Most of them spoke about Featherweight cases, but I'm sure most of the remedy's will work on any case. My Featherweight had a horrible greasy, oily smell. I went to a Featherweight class to learn how to keep her in top running condition and the instructor had all kinds of parts and supplies. Replacing the felt gasket on the bottom worked wonders in getting rid of the greasy smell, but the case still has some odor, so I am going to try some of the suggestions. If anyone is interested you can put "smelly" in the search box and it will give a list of some of those old posts.
Beautiful "new" machine, Bonnie. Thanks so much for all your inspiration, not to mention the super patterns!! Good Friday greetings and wishes for a Happy Easter everyone!

  17. Awesome, congratulations to you and Glenda! Great Easter boxes for both of you!
So the story of my Ema is similar! She was in a thrift store, I went in one day and I heard her say " hi there" , I said "hi there" to her, I looked at the price and thought it was more than I wanted to pay, but after going to check on her two more time I thought I'd better just buy her and take her home! But I paid the original price!!!!! Oh really it is okay because the thrift store uses it proceeds to help people in need!

Ema is a 301 tan short bed with an awesome case, foot petal and accessory box. And she sews like a dream!
