New in Quiltville!

20160224_103742
There are four New Kids on the ((Quilt)) Block here in Quiltville!

While some titles have been recently retired ((They have truly felt like old friends, and I’m sad to see them go!)) I am extremely happy to bring in some new titles by authors I admire who also carry on my simple philosophy of “Sew All The Scraps!”

I want to take some time today to introduce you to them, because I think these are going to become our new friends on our book shelves with loads of inspiration for quilts to come!

Some of these you may have heard of, some may be new to you, but they will ALL work with the Scrap User’s System you’ve been working so hard to get into good order and practice.

Antique to Heirloom Jelly Roll Quilts!

12 modern quilt patterns from vintage patchwork quilt designs. Bestselling quilt making authors Pam and Nicky Lintott take inspiration from their collection of antique English and American heirloom quilt designs - some of which are over 100 years old - and recreate them using pre-cut Jelly Roll fabrics. Each of the 12 quilt patterns comes with full color styled photographs, comprehensive making instructions and quilting diagrams, and requires just one Jelly Roll to make. Antique to Heirloom Jelly Roll Quilts also includes all the basic quilting techniques you will need to know to teach you how to make jelly roll quilts, from using quilting tools and quilt rulers, to pressing and pinning your finished quilt top. You will also learn how to add straight borders and mitered borders to your quilt designs, and how to bind a quilt.

What I love about this book is that there are photographs of the original antiques that the new interpretations come from, a blending of the new and the old with easy techniques.  Let your scraps play!

Farmers Wife 1930s +CD

Featuring real-life letters from The Farmer's Wife magazine, Laurie Aaron Hird's new book commemorates the strength and hope of the farm women of the Great Depression. The 99-block queen-size sampler quilt inspired by these letters uses reproduction 1930s fabrics. For each block, instructions are provided for template piecing, and--where applicable--rotary cutting, so readers can piece the blocks based on their preferred technique. CD included.
Small blocks have always been and will always be a favorite.

Sample Blocks

This is not your easy-piecy block book.  The women of the 1930s loved insane piecing with inset seams and sharp points and an incredible number of pieces to their pasttime.  The CD has paper foundation piecing templates to make these blocks EASIER than they look!

And the letters found with each block are so poignant and fun to read.

Wonky Wishes is in the house!

I received the following email that just made my day this morning:
I'm in Southern California and it is spring here, trees are budding, it's beautiful..  I received my Wonky Wishes pattern today.  Your new patterns are beyond just pattern, they are beautiful. They are well written on lovely paper and in a little folder like a paper back book.  I love it, such quality, a true degree of excellence.  Thank you for all you do to make quilting fun.

Thank you Betty!

Wonky Wishes booket!

What I love about this stand-alone pattern is the full color printed card stock envelope with string tie closure that keeps the pattern booklet tucked safely inside, and easy to store without worry of the booklet itself getting worn, bent, or damaged!  It’s a perfect pairing!  I have the folks at C&T to thank for this great presentation.  So much better than a pastic zip-lock baggie pattern.

The booklet itself is staple bound and also in glossy full color on all pages.

Isn’t it fun? That string tie closure on the envelope takes me back to grade school when envelopes like this contained our report cards, and we had to bring them home to be signed to show that they were indeed seen by parents, and then returned back to the teacher at school.  Heaven forbid you LOSE that string tied envelope with that report card inside!

I’m headed up to the cabin this afternoon after a couple of appointments.  So nice to be spending the weekend there.  I’ll be drawing for our winner of the February Quilty Box this evening!  Did you enter to win?  You have until 6pm tonight to get your entry in on that post HERE.  Good luck!

Quiltville Quote of the Day!

Yesterday I was not happy with all of the rain that has been falling in North Carolina. And then I remembered that rain brings flowers, and I was grateful. It's all about perspective, isn't it? Put on your attitude of gratitude today!

Vintage 1950s sunflower quilt from the collection of my friend Sandra, found in Canton, Texas.

Happy Thursday, everyone!

  2. Nice additions Bonnie! I've been looking at patterns in magazines with my "Scrap User System" eyes and only save the ones that will work with the fabulous system you developed and shared. It truly works and I've been an avid SUS devotee since 2011. Thank you for the excitement and generosity you bring to our beloved art/craft/hobby. Enjoy your cabin time!!Hugs, Allison in Plano, Texas USA

  3. Hi, Bonnie, I just wanted to share that my friend and fellow quilter, Karen Walker, has taken the patterns for hand piecing in the Farmer's Wife Quilt book and updated them to rotary cutting and machine piecing. She has Craftsy classes to take you through making a quilt, and the details are shared on her blog here:

Thanks for all you do to keep us using scraps and making quilts, and all the time you spend sharing with us.

  4. Oops, my mistake. Karen Walker did the instructions for the forst Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt, but not the 30's one that you showed the book for. Sorry. Still worth checking out!
