Stitching on the Mountain!

20151204_152142
It’s been a treadle weekend for me –and oh how I’ve missed it!

I’m working on these stars with crumb pieced centers – I only need 80+ of them to do what I want to do –but without a deadline, I am able to sew at a much slower pace and just enjoy the process.

Did you know that EVERY project makes crumbs and/or strings for future projects?

And no matter how you attempt to use them up, they NEVER go away and are constantly replenished by the leavings of other projects?

It’s a wonderful win win win and I love finding ways to use up the little bits, be it in crumb piecing (No foundation) or in string piecing (paper foundation) or in paper piecing. (sewing on a line on paper in a distinct pattern)  The more colors I have, the more variety I have, the better!

And you can see Sadie was working extra hard too..LOL!

Love this photo!

From this spot I can enjoy the fire, and the Netflix as I treadle!

The machine is set up right behind my comfy binding chair -- Here I was working on the crumb block centers for the stars.

With the release of yesterday’s Allietare Part 2 clue, came some questions on Neutrals --

If you are new to me and haven’t thrown yourself into scrappy abandon yet, and have some questions on what a neutral really is to me, please read my article on it HERE!  It will help you!

And if you want to come back and read it again later, you’ll find the article under N for NEUTRAL under the Tips & Techniques tab at the top of the blog!

I cut into a fun one yesterday:

GREAT 1999 Y2K Millennium print!

I was cutting backgrounds for my crumb-centered stars and I cut into this gifted piece ---yes, it’s representative of the year 2000, but the way I figure it, Have all the way until the year 3000 to use it!  I love text prints, and this one is written in several different languages and has those great clocks on it, and cut small it is really fun!

So yes – don’t go boring on your Allietare quilt and stay in the safe zone –pull into it what you want and make it FUN!

Along with my sewing day --

Turkey soup in the crock pot!

Recipe under the recipes tab at the top of the blog as well!

This smelled so good all day long while I sewed away.  There is nothing like a pot of homemade soup to warm my home, my heart, and my belly!

Finishing the evening off with some binding to NCIS!

Morning hike with a happy brown dog!

Can you even FIND Sadie in here?  She is the same color as the fallen leaves!

We were out the door for our 2 1/2 mile hike at just after 8am –the sun was shining beautifully, even though temps were in the 30s and it had frosted overnight.  I love this time of year up here, the air is so crisp and clean, the sounds of nature just amazing as we start this beautiful new day.

You’ll find me back here again today!

This little star has a fun Christmas print as star points ---and a fun neutral as a background.

Christmas time, treadle machines, fire in the fireplace, a sleeping dog, and many scraps to be thankful for.

All of this on my mind today!

Enjoy your Saturday, everyone!

  1. My neutrals are so boring, and I could only find a few random neutral strips in my scrap storage bins. At least I mixed it up a little. Have fun with the crumbs.

  2. Marvelous musings my friend. I can smell that pot of yummy turkey soup simmering from here!! Be sure to remind followers of your great explaination of fun neutrals in the March 15th episode of Quilt Cam. It was the very first recorded Quilt Cam and at the bottom of the list under the Quilt Cam tab. I refer friends and customers to it all the time. Hugs, Allison in Plano, Texas USA

  4. I am not letting the stresses of the holidays get to me...I am sewing away the days till we leave to go to our daughter's for the holidays. Enjoying the mystery and I have really caught the scrap bug. You are right, just as you finish one quilt...the scraps are there for another!!!

  5. Love this whole scene. You deserve some fun "you" time. I love these crumb stars and hope you explain how you do them, foundation or no foundation, in your next quilt cam. Enjoy your soup! Smells good from here. LOL

  7. Oh, yes, every project, large or small creates even more crumbs to use up. They multiply like crazy! Enjoy your cabin time and more leisurely sewing. Have you watched the series House of Cards on Netflix? Riveting!

  9. Bonnie- I love your little stars, even though I am not a fan of crumbs or strings. Your stars are cute.

Your walk at 8am. It is not light yet, here at 0800 (Alaska). It is just getting light at 9am. And I like to have a walk, when I can, even if it may be in the 20's. We just bundle up.

And You soup, looks so yummy, and much healthier than my Cream of chicken and wild rice, I have had a hankering to make again. BUT, I think I will look at your recipe and go for that.

Thank you so much for the many ways that you nourish us each day (food, scenery, quilting pleasures, and a little stimulation for the brain!

Enjoy your time to do what you love!

  10. I love your stars. Is there an older post that gives directions for the stars? What is the finished size?

  11. Thanks for the neutral post. I have to reprogram the way my minds thinks and the way the eyes looks at fabric. I'm learning!!

  12. I love everything about this post! You have a way of taking each day and getting the best out of every single minute just by the way you describe it. It's a gift you give every day. I am loving your crumb and string piecing projects & that four patch quilt is amazing.

  13. I really need to get my treadle out and learn how to use it. It was my grandma's and was all she ever used.
