A Mackinac Walkabout!

Mackinac_May2014 071
Chances are, if you ship something via FedEx to Mackinac island, it’s going to be delivered by bicycle courtesy of THIS gentleman – the Island FedEx guy!

We loved seeing him on his bike, clipboard in hand, and asked him about his job and what he liked about it.

He said it was boring to be retired!  So he has taken this job and loves it.  Packages arrive by barge or ferry---and then he gets them from the dock to where they are supposed to be.

He passed us by bike a couple of times while we were out walking and exploring the area.

My love of history was in over-drive!

Just in case it looks cold in these photos, let me assure it it was!

Uhuh!  5 degrees above freezing, plus wind chill!

And yes, it was drizzly rain…but we had a great time anyway!

My friend Jill arrived from San Diego, and after lunch we headed out to walk around town and see what we could see.

I don’t think there is any worry of breaking this rule!

I don’t have a lot of time to add more to this post..it’s been a very full day with a lecture this evening by Susan Carlson followed by a fabulous 5 course dinner in the dining room ---these are just a few shots to keep you entertained until morning when I can do this justice.

I LOVE this photo of this house with its weather beaten shingles on the shore of lake Huron:

Love this!

((Okay, it looks like the setting of some eerie haunted movie like The Shining or something!))

And I love the sound of this too!  Clip Clop!

((Notice the snow?!?!))

More from Mackinac to follow ---my classes start in the morning ---

  1. Really, are there no cars allowed on the island? How big is the island?

  2. There is an ambulance on the island. Unfortunately we had a ride in it. Since it was very early in the morning and the streets were empty they even took us back to our hotel by ambulance.

  3. It IS the setting of the movie Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve. You can see some pics off the lobby in the Grand Hotel. I love the Island...but I love it in the summer, warmer than you are experiencing.

  7. We love the island, it is a perfect size to bike around with intermittent stops to jump in the water and cool off in the summer! But it is beautiful any time of year!

  8. Oh Bonnie, your pictures and all, have me wanting to make another visit to Mackinac. I swear I can "smell" the fudge while sitting here in my living room. Enjoy yourself!

  9. The island is 3.8 square miles, but 8 miles to bike around its circumference.

  14. We visited the island a few years ago, loved it. As we were taking the ferry back, we passed a ferry going the other way to the island with a UPS delivery truck on it!
