Quilt-Cam 4/2/2014 In the Binding Zone!

Maryann
Maryann sent this photo of she and her friend with me on the BIG SCREEN! LOL!

This was last week’s quilt cam, and let me just say that at this size, NO ONE is attractive! Holy Moses ---look at those man hands!

But how fun to see both of them sitting with me and sewing up a storm!

I love the photos you send of your set up for Quilt-Cam so keep the emails coming.

Pets, babies, hubbies, friends, stitch groups, retreats –I love seeing it all!

This is MY VIEW from where I am sitting tonight!

I’ve got Wonky Wishes all quilted and trimmed….I’m so excited to get the binding on!

I’ve set aside two different walking feet to talk to you about the difference, so you will want to catch that segment in the feed tonight.

I’m also going to show my favorite quickie label-in-the-corner.

This was the quilt as it came off the machine – isn’t it great?

  19. Hi Bonnie!

  21. Hi Bonnie ... Watching you on Quilt cam tonite ... Need to know what you think... In today's pennysaver there is an add for a PINK LADY Atlas sewing maching made in Japan with the books and accessories for $100.00. Is this a good deal or is it overpriced?

Thanks for the info. and all that you give to us in the quilt world.

  25. Watching quilt cam and cutting fabrics for 2 different BOM's Love your tip about just clipping the corners of the quilt while sewing on binding. Tried that tip yesterday which resulted in 4 perfect corners without a lot of extra fuss. Thanks for all you do.

Hi Bonnie, What do you do if you get to a corner and you do have a seam?

  27. I'm watching while hand piecing my scrappy Texas Stars. It seems as if there are always plenty of scraps that are waiting to go into a quilt. Have you ever put on binding with your longarm? I have not as of yet, but then I don't enjoy manhandling the quilt while using my domestic machine.

  28. I've been hand binding two small lap kilts these last days. I'm done! My reward now: quiltcam and relax! Trying to make up my mind to how much I should bid for this ruin I want to turn into a treadle my great aunt's hand crank Singer 28k.

  30. I am watching you from wet St. Louis, working on making paper-pieced sashing for the 2013 BOM from thequiltshow.com. I would send you a photo but I don't think I can do that here in the comments section of your blog.

I am one of those weird people who enjoys sewing down the binding. It's the last step in the process and I know when the binding is on the quilt is finished. Very satisfying.

  40. I'm working on hand stitching my binding from my "Aunie's Anvil" quilt. Just discovered it's difficult to type on a laptop while wearing a thimble!

Had a brainwave after seeing a picture on your blog a month or two ago: baste the label in first! It made sewing my last couple bindings on much easier.

  52. I had never thought about the feed dog issue with the walking foot needing to match the machine. I had the straight stitch kind, and was thrilled when I found the zigzag kind, because the toe is open on mine (Brother), and it make it much easier to stitch in the ditch when you can see so well. The funny thing is that I just used it on my old Singer model 15, and it worked perfectly, but when I switched it over to use on my White 88 zigzag, for a day out with other quilters, it pushed the top layer toward me. It actually worked better with the narrower feeddogs underneath ! Strange, but true !

Bonnie, what i love about doing bindings is that this is my secret time to take a bow. While sewing on the binding, I will say things to myself like.."Isn't this the best use of lime green ever?? Or i am so glad i changed the scale of those blocks to 9", or I will say sometrhing like "Isn't this amazing you created something that wasn't even in existance 5 mos ago" Yeah for you!! Its all about attitude towards those bindings Carolyn Barnett Rancho Cucamonga Calif

  58. Did Not know there was a difference in Walking feet! Other than shank height! I placed my order today for a walking foot for my Singer 221. The one I had been using was for my Elna super. They asked for a discount code and I gave them your name. If it wasn't for you I would have never known there was a difference. Thank you Bonnie and SewClassic.com

  60. I don't roll up my binding before I sew it on either. However, as I iron it lengthwise, wrong sides together... I let the beginning of the binding strip drop into a small box. After ironing the entire binding strip and letting it feed into the box as I ironed, I don't let the end drop into the box and get lost, I clip the end to the top of the box with a clothes pin or binder clip. I take the box with the binding over to my machine and place it on the floor and work as Bonnie does in today's quilt-cam, making sure to start with the end that I clip to the box. Not only does the box kept any debris from the floor away from the binding but because the binding is coming out of the box the reverse of when it went in... it doesn't ever tangle. There is one disadvantage to this technique... if you have to walk away from the box before you finish binding your quilt, make absolutely sure the box is sealed tight and set in a secured area...because if your cat decides to jump into the box and that binding gets stirred up.... get ready for a tangled mess!... there's just something about binding in a box that makes it irresistible to cats... dogs not so much. LOL
