Scrappy Trip-Along at My Girlfriend’s Quilt Shoppe!

I received an email from Janet O. with a TON of pictures from a fun workshop she attended at her local Quilt Shop!

They had a large group of quilters participating and sewing up fun and scrappy blocks using my Scrappy Trips tutorial!

Whoowhoo!  It looked like so much fun, I wish I could have been there sewing along with everyone else!

This is what Janet had to say about her day at My Girlfriend’s Quilt Shoppe:

I spent 6 hours Friday at My Girlfriend's Quilt Shop in Logan, Utah participating in their Scrappy Trip Along. The email went out to their mailing list inviting people to bring sewing supplies, 16"x 2 1/2" strips, and a lunch if you'd like, and spend as much of the day (from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) as you'd like, free of charge.

There was a link to your Scrappy Trips pattern at Quiltville.
I spent 6 hours there and the room was still full and buzzing like a hive when I left. Thought I'd send you some photos.

The woman smiling above is Gail. I had never met her before, but we quickly bonded over our similar need for control.

Here are the beginnings of our blocks--notice how controlled? : )

scrappytripalong3

This block (above) was made from the fabrics a woman had inherited from her mother.

And this smiling lady was the only one sewing on a featherweight--it had belonged to her mother and she had learned to sew on it. I can't believe I didn't get a photo.

See the green frog on the table in the foreground below? It was on a pedestal, and was the brainchild of shop owner, Kris. Whenever you had to do any unpicking that was NOT part of the pattern (because, as you know, there is unpicking involved), you had to ring a bell and place the frog by your machine. You were the proud owner of the "Rippit" award, until someone else rang the bell. I had it first! : )

A very fun day. Thanks for the pattern, Bonnie!

EVERYTHING works in this block..it’s all about color and contrast, not the print of the fabric!

Can’t beat those smiles!

Lovely pinks from a Jelly Roll!

Blocks appearing like magic! Snap your fingers and another one is done!

Aren’t they great?

But I’m warning you --- these are like potato chips--- you can’t make just ONE!

Thanks for sharing your day and the great photos, Janet! I can’t wait to see your completed Scrappy Trips top!

  1. How fun to see my friend Kris' shop on your blog! An extra surprise was seeing my friend Michelle in one of the photos! I'm going to pass this along to Kris. She'll feel honored to have made your blog! Oh, and yes, it's a very fun shop. There's always something new and exciting going on there!

  2. Scrappy Trips is a really cool, fun block....I have one on my design wall right now! It will be a project Linus quilt so I only need 12 blocks but I see more than one in my future. Or maybe I'll take it down, scramble the blocks, put it back up and play around some more. I'm wondering if anyone has made one with one constant for the center?

  3. Oh, I love the "Rippit" award idea. I'm going to have to get me a stuffed frog and bell to take to quilt camp in March. This is such a fun idea. I hope the ingenious owner of this idea, doesn't mind me borrowing it.

  4. I am so glad to know that I am not the only one who has to "control" her scrappiness! LOL I'm obviously not the only one who has to go back rip seams!
I'm at my mom's for two weeks for a funeral and it is driving me crazy not to be able to work on my trip alongs!

WOWOW what did I see in the 2nd photo! The secret ingredient in quilting? --- CHOCOLATE, in the form of Hersey's kisses! No wonder the group sew wonderful scrappies.... pass the kisses to me please ;)
This is one block I am aiming for. Thanks Bonnie...my list is getting longer with each time I visit here. lol

  6. Yes, there were Hershey's Kisses at every table, and the gal I shared a table with (shop owner, Kris), wasn't eating any. When I looked in the garbage as I tossed another wrapper in, I realized all of those wrappers were mine, and I tried to restrain myself and focus on the sewing. Maybe if I had eaten less chocolate and done more sewing I would have finished 7 blocks instead of six. We had a ball!

  8. It's funny how you've had this tutorial up on your blog for quite a while and NOW.....it's all the rage!! It's actually been on my "to do" list for a while and I pulled out some fabrics to use last fall ----- Janet & I share the "control" gene --- but I haven't done it yet. Maybe today is the day. Thanks, Bonnie, for all the wonderful ideas you share.

  10. LOL . . . I have to echo SweetAmbrosia's comments too, my list grows ever longer with "Bonnie" projects; BP's for short. I grab a blank project sheet, write the name of the block and what sizes to cut. I troop upstairs to the scrap piles (currently on the floor)and start cutting and kitting for upcoming retreats. So, I'm following your advice Bonnie about not cutting it all up until you have a project in mind. Sage advice indeed!!

  11. But wait, no one seemed to mention the great name of this shop My Girlfriend's Quilt Shoppe...what a wonderful disguise....Hubster: Where you going today, dear? Me: Oh, just over to My Girlfriend's!!! HA...I love it....as well as the frog "prize" and the chocolate....we quilters have soooo much fun.

  12. My LQS has a United States Post Office inside, The Old Craft Store on the square in Old Downtown Carrollton, Texas. I would go there to shop and buy stamps or send certified mail during the week. Invariably my DH would call to find out why I wasn't in my home office doing the bookkeeping. I could say, very honestly, I was just at the post office, dear.

  13. I need a Frog! Started a Scrappy trips in VT 2012 w/ Bonnie- and made the palest one in her posted picture. Not enough contrast. I rectified that with next 20 blocks made over the summer, and generally picked the strongest fabric to be the diagonal in each block. I really enjoy seeing all the bright Scrappy trips blocks as I drift around the web. Thank you for the pattern Bonnie! I love the worldwide spirit of community you have developed through your generosity.
