Something Smelly ---

And I LIKE it!

Not that I like “ALL” things smelly --- but antique featherweight case kind of smelly I can live with!

To me it just smells "old" but not bad --

((hopefully my grandkids will say the same thing about me when I'm 80 something..LOL!))

I received an email from Marky last week saying that she had a featherweight case that she had tried to de-fragrance-itize to no avail.  And the smell bothers her, and she didn’t want to put her featherweight back IN the case because she’d finally gotten it to the point that it didn’t smell LIKE the case anymore ---

Would I like to adopt her case?  Did I have a use for it?

YES!  I have been one case short because the white 1964 featherweight I bought came without a case – when I picked it up in the antique mall in Twin Falls, Idaho more than 12 years ago,  it was in a plastic file folder box.  I transferred it to a portable soft sided cooler with a shoulder strap and front pockets which has worked really well ---but it’s nice to have a case for it should I decide to ever sell it.

I know the white featherweights came with a green/cream case ---but any case is better than no case!

The bracket for the foot control is there – no tray, but guess what?  I have a tray on the broken case that had no lid that came with Missy the Magic Bus…..and that can go with THIS case!

There are cases enough to go around.

Right now, Doris is the case-less one because I used HER case to take Missy the Magic Bus in to get her timing adjusted….

Doris in the case!

I put Doris in the new case to try it out ----voila!

Case closed!

PS ---anyone up for Quilt-Cam tonight?  I’ve got guys here doing the front and back doors, but that will be long done by the time 9pm Eastern rolls around.  Not sure what I want to work on yet, but I’ll grab something…

  1. Sounds like a game of musical cases there! Have you ever tried OdorZout? I'm not affiliated in any way, just have had good luck with it. It is safe around pets and has no odor of it's own. I used it on my FW case and lots of other smelly things.

  3. My FW case doesn't smell bad, but it does smell like an old machine - a little like oil, I guess. I don't mind because my machine truly is part of the family, and this is one of those imperfections that we just accept. My grandmother bought it new and my mom inherited it when my grandmother passed away, then used it to sew my wedding dress and the bridesmaids' dresses. Now it's mine.

Looking forward to QuiltCam tonight! Do you still want pictures of pets helping us with our quilts?

  4. Oust, give it a spray of that! I've been looking out for a feather weight here in the UK, they seem so very rare and really expensive. I shall keep looking though.

  6. Although I haven't tried it, I've heard that enclosing smelly items in a large plastic bag with several charcoal briquettes inside and leaving it for a week works, too. Place the briquettes onto a few crumpled pieces of newspaper to keep it from dirtying anything like a quilt block.

  11. Hi Bonnie
If the case is really smelly, try putting a piece of Dial soap in the case.

It works really well on smelly quilts!!!

  13. Marky and I feel the same way and have the SAME situation!~ I would have / will send you mine if you want another... or bring it to my next workshop with you. I just can't handle it. My sinuses drive me batty. Need to have surgery and can't be DOWN, so never did. I digress... lol

  14. I also think the smell is not bad at all. My Sissy had a bad smell but as soon as I replaced her felt pad the spoiled odor went away and just a machine oil smell was left.
I saw a fix that used a bare light bulb and really "cooking" the inside of the case.

  17. Bonnie, I am so excited! Went over to a friend's house today and she mentioned something about having tried to sell a featherweight and no one called. Asked her what she wanted for it and it was in a low ball park for excellent condition-I now have a Featherweight machine and her check will not bounce-it is my Christmas present to me for being a good mom, grandma and all around decent person this last year! :D Hey, I am worth it and then some! Yea for me! Happy dancing on cloud 9!

    1. Wow! Good for you. So glad you got a good price. We all deserve a FW--we make the best use of them piecing our quilts. I'll bet our FWs are happy to be making us so happy. Merry Christmas to you!

  18. Bonnie, I had a smelly 301A case. I put a slice of bread in a bowl and poured vinegar (white) to soak up the bread. I put it in the case and let it sit for several days. After removing the bowl I let the case stand open for a couple days. It doesn't smll brand new, but the offensive smell is gone. Mine mostly smelled of age and mildew.

  19. I have several FW all of the cases smell. I have used fabreeze, Basement deodrizers. I haven't tried soap, or Oust.
My best is to just leave the case open. Mine aren't Mildewy, but just have an ancient smell of oil, dust, age.
My DGT said it smells like an old person's house.LOL I'm an old person! LOL

  20. The gross smell actually comes from the horse glue that was used in the case (yuck) AND the old oil pads in the machines. No amount of Febreeze or anything else will work if you don't replace the old oil pad and then "bake" and spray the inside of the case with bleach (yes, mist it, don't soak it, after it has baked (a 100 watt bulb inside).

  21. Bonnie,
Not trying to be a Kiljoy, but I'm not sure the tray will fit in this newer case. I became a FW collector a few years back and have more than I care to admit of many different years and styles. The tray "sits" on corner "brackets" in the older models. This case is from the '50s until end of production and does not have the tray supports. This one originally came with a metal tray attached to the side that would have been next to the oil can bracket on the side that is shown. The replacements can be found though (I purchased one off of eBay).

    1. Yep, that's what I thought when I saw that picture. It's like mine. The tray is metal, not removeable, and just fits in the space beside the folded up FW bed. It holds the bobbins all secure in a line, and the green cardboard box of accessories fits right in there, too, on it's side. I store a button-holer in the space down below that little metal tray.

  22. How do you know if you have the 221 or 222? Mine has a short wide tray... was thinking of getting the extension table for hubby for Christmas :)

  25. Hi Bonnie! Delighted to be back again with you this evening. I'm hand-stitching blanket stitch on a fused applique wall hanging -- a Christmas gift in the cute 'Veggie Cats' patterns. This one is 'Avocato'...you can guess what it looks like. All my FG units for Easy Street are finished. I'm ready for Clue 3! :-)

Bonnie, Sometimes I put you on my computer and my tablet so that when you are reading and answering questions and the ad starts, I just switch to which ever one the ad is not on. I seem to get them more on my tablet more than on my computer.

    Bonnie,
Since you are sewing 4-patches tonight, could you show the process of spinning the seams? I am getting ready to sew my Easy Street twosies into 4-patches.

  30. I've dropped a few of those little silica gel packets that come in new shoe boxes. Read somewhere that might help. I don't mind the "oily" smell. Reminds me of something from my childhood...maybe the whetstone and oil my dad used to sharpen pocket knives and my mother's favorite kitchen knife. The little packets seemed to have made it a little less strong.

  32. Enjoyed watching you last night. It was my first visit. I have had a bar of Safeguard soap in my Featherweight case for years and it works nicely. I read about that years ago when doing research about Featherweights. Seems to stay fresh for a long time. I even put a bar in my undies drawer! Remember reading that Safeguard works better than any other soap. I believe it!

  33. I have a small travel candle (scented) that I store in my case with the Featherweight when not in use. It took all the musty smell out of the case. I learned to sew on a Featherweight and am now teaching my 3 year old granddaughter to sew on it too.
