iPhone-o-Gram! I'm here!

I've arrived in Bedford, PA---home of the infamous Mary's Quilt Shop, owned by the wonderfully talented fabric designer and antique quilt collector Mary Koval!

I'm taking pics of her shop and her retreat center---last time I was here or was a ramshackle tumble-down building!

It is SO beautiful!!

On the MRI side--I got a call that I do have nerve impingement due to a bulging disk in my lumbar spine. I'll need an epidural injection---hopefully before I leave for Bali.

In the mean time---driving with an ice pack was my best friend today---and when the real gel pack got warm---an emergency stop at Food Lion for a bag of frozen peas saved my bacon and my back!

  2. Oh, my! Another shop to add to my list of "must visit". Sorry to hear about your back, but at least you know what the problem is and you and your doctor have a plan to get you relief.

Nice to know you arrived safely. Can't wait to meet you on Tuesday in Wellsboro for your "My Blue Heaven" workshop. Take care, and have a good nights rest.

Patchwork Penguin, what Bonnie needs is for someone to meet her in the parking lot and haul her stuff in to sewing room and lift all things as needed. Sounds like that back would benefit from months of being VERY nice to it.

  7. Before my Pain Management doctor died in a plane crash I got these epidurals every 6 months. If conscious sedation is offered...do it!!!

Yes I agree, Versed is a wonderful drug when receiving injections into an area that is already so inflammed. You wont remember the procedure and will awaken quickly.

  8. Glad you made it safely and that you found frozen peas along the way! Lol! Will the epidural injection cure it once and for all?

  9. I've had two epidural injections for my back pain. The results are AMAZING! The whole procedure takes about 2 minutes...max! My doctor slips that needle in without me even feeling it! Instant relief! :)

  11. A nice cold mojito helps as well -- but not while you're driving : )

  12. Bonnie, I JUST saw on fb, that a FROZEN soaked sponge is a great ice pack... if you put it in a zip lock it will not make anything wet when it thaws

  13. My brother just had an injection for the same thing Tuesday. He had been in so much pain for so long, and after he got it it was all gone. Good luck with it! Hope you have as good a results as my brother did.

Oh, and I think the bag of frozen peas should be an inspiration for a quilt... lol

  14. That looks like a gorgeous place!
We have used frozen peas, too. Once we were out of them and someone grabbed a bag of frozen blueberries. Not a good idea when there is a tiny tear in the bag! : )

  15. Bonnie, we have a formula around here for making a very cold compress for deep aches. It came from a physical therapist, and the supplies are pretty easy. Use a frozen foods ziplock bag because they are very tough & resist most of the wear & tear. You put an equal amount of water and rubbing alcohol into the bag. Give it a little motion to mix the 2 together. Lay it flat in the freezer so it freezes level. It will get to a gel state, which is nice and comfy--no ice bulges against your back. This will get extremely cold--keep it on for 15-30 minutes (or as long as you can stand). It is a good idea to have cloth against the skin if you will be using for a longer period. When done, put it back into a freezer & will be completely reusable. I know you are on the road & don't have a freezer---but maybe a kind soul in one of your classes would make you up a couple bags to use!!! They may let you use a freezer at the hotel you are at too!!! Hope this helps.

Glad to hear that others use bags of peas as well. My kids laugh about all the bags of them in the freezer that say "Do Not Eat". Enjoy your time in PA!

  17. There is a book called "Healing Back Pain Naturally" by Dr. Art Brownstein my brother had bulging disk in his back and they were recommending back surgery. He avoided it by doing the exercises...just a thought. The book has a blue and white cover and is a soft cover book, so it is somewhere around $10. Not much of a gamble.

  18. I just had the shots in my lower spine this morning - the second round. The shots do not hurt, take less than 5 minutes from the time you walk through the door until you are on the way out. My doctor gives a numbing shot first that I don't feel. This is my second series, the first was in February. I have another set of shots scheduled for December 12 - I will feel good for Christmas this year. You will need to have someone drive you home - minor part of the procedure. Good luck - and I hope you can get the shots scheduled ASAP.

  19. I oscillate between the bag of frozen peas & a hot water bottle.
I like the sound of the injections but I must say I am getting great relief at the moment from an osteopath & Pilates.
    Best of luck Bonnie!

  20. the injection will feel like a miracle. I agree with the Pilates idea. I had back surgery and my surgeon recommended Pilates once I was healed and finished with PT. I have to tell you that sitting at a sewing machine is the hardest thing on my body. It is sew inportant to stretch and keep things moving.

  21. Bonnie, pls get a second opinion BEFORE you get the shot. Try an orthopedic Dr.
