Good-bye, Day Dream Believer ---

Note – if you are looking for today’s earlier Give-Away post, you can find it HERE!

There is nothing quilty about this post at all ---

I just heard the news about Davy Jones passing away of a heart attack. He was only 66.

You know, when I was 6 years old 66 seemed ancient. And now, the closer it gets, the too-sooner it seems.

I remember VIVIDLY playing in the basement at the home of my childhood friend, Marjie Thurston. ((Marjie, I’ve tried to find you everywhere, I can’t! If you ever read this, know that I think of you so fondly!))

We lived in Minnetonka, Minnesota. EVERYONE has basements in Minnesota, it’s a fact, dontcha know?

Anyway ---Marjie had an older sister, Kathy. And her sister had a record player. ((We ENVIED this record player!)) And she’d put on her Monkee’s albums or 45’s--- ((Remember when there were those little yellow plastic dealies you had to put in the center of the 45’s to get them to fit the record player center spindle??)) and Davey would sing “Day Dream Believer” and we would spin and spin and spin until our skirts swirled so high our panties would show, and then Marjie’s mom would say “Good girls don’t let their panties show!”. Then we’d fall to the ground, laughing and dizzy from spinning and let the room twirl around us while Davy continued to sing. We were 6 years old.

Rest in peace Davy --- thanks to you, I grew up in the grooviest era ever! You will be missed.

  1. My husband just told me it was on the news....WAAAAA I LOVED Davy Jones too! I played my Monkees albums until they were worn out. My little sister to this day talks about having to listen to the Monkees and Three Dog Night non-stop when she was a child. (I think she blames me for a lot of her problems today hehehe)

    RIP DAVY!!! =^..^=

I know just how you feel. Davy was my first pop star crush, I think! I had pictures from 16 magazine taped all over my walls, imagined I was the one he sang to and that his eyes sparkled when he looked at me! It's so funny to think of now. It definitely makes me feel sad!

I, too, loved Davy Jones and the Monkees; such great music for tweens and teens in that era. My Mom, on the other hand, was not so impressed. Their hair is toooo long!! (haha such innocence) I guess Davy has taken the 'Last Train to Clarksville', too soon to be gone. I still have their albums...guess I better put one on for old times sake.

  6. Fond memories for me of the Monkees as well, but my memories prove I'm an older gal than you. I would wait in the basement/TV room of my college dorm on Monday nights, watching most of the newest episode of The Monkees before I ran out the door and across campus to an evening class.
My favorite was Mike, but Davy was the best singer. So sad to read the news of his passing.

  7. I loved listening to their music growing up. Remember they even had a program on tv too. I loved Davy Jones and the Monkees until David Cassidy and the Partridge Family came along. Looking back on it, those were pretty innocent times...and music compared to today...still like the songs. They bring back such memories.

  11. The Monkees was the first live concert I ever went to. Peter was my favorite, but Davy ran a close second. Have enjoyed seeing him sing at PBS fundraiser time in recent years.

Oh, Davy, you will be missed but forever remembered by yours songs. Your pictures were all over my walls and your albums played over and over. And never missed your show and the next morning we Monkee addicts would all talk about the show. Used to know your shoe size, favorite and all the things they used to write about in Tiger Beat but the years have made me forgotten them, sorry.

Rest in Peace, Davy. I was so sorry to hear the news of your passing.

  14. My girlfriend and I were just reminiscing about being 6 or 7 or we can't really remember and watching the Monkees and then believing with our friends that we would really date Davy someday. Fun to think about, so sad he has died so "young." And yes, we were in our basements in Minnesota too (Rochester that is, a bit south of you). :)

  15. Oh my goodness I was in my basement listening too, in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and I was 16. He was so cute, as was Peter. I think I still have one of those old 45s in my memory box! Live every day as if it's your last, because you never know.

  20. I loved watching the Monkees.... I couldn't believe it when hubby told me at the dinner table. Our generation is starting to pass.... does that mean we're getting older?

  23. My best friend in middle school and I would go and raid her sisters records when she wasn't home. We played her 45's and dance around. I was close to your home town, I was in Minneapolis, still am. When my daughter was young we watched the Monkey's on Nick' and she Made Me pull out my old Monkey album, she played it over and over. Was fun reliving it with her.. Sad to hear of the passing.

  25. Davy was the hot one of the group! Watching the Monkees was a longed for treat. I still have some of their CD's that I had recently purchased. And YES - 66 is WAY TOO YOUNG. RIP Davy - you are still in our hearts!

  26. Love the Monkees! My Sister got us tickets to see them at a concert in the mid 90's. We were right next to the stage, and it was AWESOME! They put on the best show, and they were so relaxed and funny. Joking about how they would be keep reuniting for a tour even if they had to come out in walkers! He was taken way too young. I can't believe that the news stations do not make a bigger deal over his death. He was an idol and heart throb for many girls. I even got my son hooked on his music. He will be missed... God Bless him for all the wonderful years!

  28. Us Monkees girls have been comiserating on facebook. My girlfrieds and I watched the reruns(not that we knew it) and I was a Davy girl-though I thought peter was cute and funny. My best friend Susan liked Mickey. Cool thing is that Peter's manager lives here in Lewisville and he used to sing with his band at Lewisvilles family day. Ahh monkees.

I honestly sat and cried when I saw this. Davy was my hero and my first love. I was around 8 to 10 when I found them and couldn't believe my good fortune. I remember sitting at my best friends house, ironically also named Mindy, and playing their 45 records on my little pink record player. You youngins' may not know what a record player was, but they were the rage back then! Oh the memories this has brought back. Davy, you will be missed. I love you!!!

  31. I was 13 when they came on TV, and my father had just died a few months before. The Monkees made me smile, and I fell in love with Davy Jones. I was sure he would find me and marry me and make my world okay again.
Thanks, Davy; you helped a sad girl smile again.
