And just because I want to post them, and they don’t seem to fit anywhere else…these are some other pics I took during my flight to San Diego. Sometimes when flying the pilot will come on and tell you “Folks we are now flying over ____” but they didn’t..so I was guessing!
Sometimes that is all I can say! And you know what? I hope that life never ceases to take my breath away. I hope these things never become ordinary. Let me not ever stop seeing the beauty and wonder in the things that cross my path daily.

I always want the pilot to tell me where I'm flying over - I have pics over Hawaii where there are round things on the ground and I don't know what they are !!!

Only 1 time have I ever heard a pilot come on the intercom to tell us what was below...Mt. Fuji. It was a Northwest Airlines flight (military flight). Breath taking.

ReplyDeleteI love looking at the landscape out the plane window and I too wonder about the landscape and love seeing mountains from above and try to fit landmarks with geography.

... but the mountain/canyon pics make up for loosing...I'd rather see your pics from a plane than drive over those mountains in winter!
We flew over pretty much the same part of the country on our way home from the Pacific Northwest last summer. Just beautiful - breathtaking!

ReplyDeleteI just asked my husband (commercial pilot for 30 years--and NO they do not take those sights for granted) about the locations of your photos. Yes, you were in southern Colorado in that second picture, just east of Alamosa with the Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Park in the left of the picture--in that rounded flat part to the left of the big mountain. Top picture you are crossing over the Continental Divide. Have ridden snow mobiles up on that! The "canyon" photos are not the Grand Canyon itself. Most likely feeder canyons to the Grand Canyon. He is looking at your route to identify. He flew transcontintenal flights from coast to coast for a number of years so recognizes most prominent places. And if you are ever wondering about a location on the flight, tell the flight attendant to call up to the cockpit and ASK! They are happy to announce but don't want to bother frequent passengers. I WANT to know where I am and luckily have him with me usually to point everything out. And the pilots DO NOT like getting up at the crack of dawn for flights, either. That's why it's nice to get some seniority and fly the later flights of the day.......my husband didn't like to go in early at all and always flew the later flights. Getting up at that hour regularly is hard on your body!

I have flown a lot and have seen some beautiful things while flying.
ReplyDeleteI too, stop what I am doing to take it in. The most beautiful thing I have ever seen was on my flight to Italy in 2005. It was about 1 AM when I spotted the northern lights. The Northern Lights at 40,000 feet are an amazing sight to see. It was simply beautiful. I had a window seat on the left side of the plane, so I was front row to God's light show, and I will never forget it.

I took some photos on a flight recently and when I was home I used google maps to confirm the locations. My flight was only an hour flight so it wasn't too hard to find the locations, ie I knew one photo was taken about 5mins before landing so found the airport and slowly scrolled away from it till I found matching terrain. But I think asking the flight attendants at the time is the best idea!
ReplyDeleteFlying home from Europe last October our flight had to really detour north over Greenland because of a mid Atlantic storm.
ReplyDeleteSnow and ice and rocks and little signs of habitation.
The Air Canada pilot come on the intercom and told us what was below and all of us oohed and aahed at the beauty of the landscape. It is not a usual flight plan to see Greenland, most transatlantic flights give lots of ocean views.
I love looking at the views.
I was only 10 away from guessing correctly. Congrats to the winner. The aerial photos are fun. I always get the window of the airplane and engine in mine. Very interesting sights to see crossing the USA.
ReplyDeleteThanks again, Bonnie! I love your pics! Seems all I do lately is work and sleep, so I live vicariously through you. At least during the work week. Weekends are filled with finishing up those 12 in 12 UFO's. I am working on how to get a bow tie block out of each charm in the charm pack I won, that will be a good starting point, I think. I still cant believe I won! If you ever get stranded at Seatac, give a holler! We can turn stranded into adventure...

I am also a window seat lover when I fly and am equally happy to look down onto cloud forms if its not a clear day with the ground in sight. I love flying over mountains the best! Thanks for the picture show.
