Orca Bay, Part 8! The Big Finish!

Happy New Year!!

Can you believe it!? It’s HERE!  I remember being in high school, studying history, pondering about the Mayan calendar and wondering if the world really WOULD end in 2012? Some how I didn’t think so…and I’m glad.  I’ve got too many projects to finish!

I’m writing this post ahead --- because as it airs, I’m in Texas celebrating New Years by giving some classes at Fabric Fanatics, and doing a lecture/trunkshow for the Garland Quilt Guild!  These guys really start off New Years with a BANG!

There is no better way to reveal this, than just to reveal this…So, are you ready? TADA!!

2011mystery 253

This is Orca Bay!

And if you have followed along up to this point, you’ve got all the components to put it together.  The only thing you need to add is an inner border – and we’ll get to that!

Look at this diagram carefully and notice that it is all in horizontal rows..there is nothing on point here…Row 1 consists of blue string blocks, and  the string geese units that we made Friday.

Row two is constructed of string geese units alternated with the Ohio star blocks…with every other star having either a neutral background, or a black background…followed by another row of blue string blocks, and string geese units.

Lay out all the quilt center blocks and parts in rows as shown, paying careful attention to the direction the blue strings point.  The “real” quilt photo above will help you.  Join the units into rows, and join the rows to complete the quilt center.  Press.

Inner Border:

Cut 8 2” strips of neutral fabric ((I used one shirting print, but you could go scrappy if you wanted)) across the width of the fabric from selvage to selvage. Join the 8 border strips end to end with diagonal seams to make a strip approximately 320” long. Trim excess 1/4” from seams and press seams open.

Lay the quilt center out on the floor, smoothing it gently. Do not tug or pull. Measure the quilt through the center from top to bottom. Cut two inner side borders this length. Sew the inner side borders to the quilt sides with right sides together, pinning to match centers and ends. Ease where necessary to fit. Press seams toward the borders.

Repeat for top and bottom inner borders, measuring across the quilt center, including the borders just added in the measurement. Cut top and bottom inner borders this length. Stitch the top and bottom inner borders to the quilt center, pinning to match centers and ends, easing where necessary to fit. Press seams toward borders.

Side Borders:

border13units

Left facing

Join 13 border units ((Yes, these are all border units!)) with the black triangles all pointing left.  Make 2.

border13unitsright

Right Facing

Join 13 Border units with the black triangles all pointing right.  Make 2.

sideborder1

Join a left pointing border section to a right pointing border section as shown.  Make 2.

Sew the side borders to the quilt sides with right sides together, pinning to match centers and ends. Ease where necessary to fit. Press seams toward the inner borders.

The Top and bottom borders are pieced the same way, with one fewer unit per end, and the 3” hour glass units you pieced in Part 7 in the center:

border12-units

Join 12 Border units with the black triangles all pointing left.  Make 2.

border12unitsright

Join 12 Border units with the black triangles all pointing right.  Make 2.

topbottomborder1

Join the left facing border half and the right facing border half with the hour glass unit in the center.  Make 2.

The diagram doesn’t do it justice, because it can’t show the variety of the scraps, OR the strings!

2011mystery 185

This is the top, right after I completed it, laying on my studio floor.

2011mystery 189

I quilted it using antique tan colored thread, in an edge to edge design called “Feather Meander #1” by Jessica Schick.  There are a lot of busy pieces in this quilt, lots of seams, and the quilting wasn’t going to show much anyway..I love the texture this added to the quilt! Don't you love the chickns and the candy corn in there? FUN!

2011mystery 261

I love how the direction of the strings make my eyes travel all over the quilt surface!  I bound the quilt in a solid black to give a definite finish to the quilt.

2011mystery 255

Even though the picture didn’t photograph well because of the sunlight…look how the texture of that quilting shows!

I’m so glad you followed along this journey with me!  I can’t wait to see what your progress shows!  Remember to come back tomorrow, Monday, Jan 2nd, for our Mystery Monday Link-Up!  We’ll probably do ONE MORE Link-Up after this one --- just to give people a chance to catch up with their tops.

Don’t forget to check in on last Monday’s Link-Up!  There are some beautiful quilts taking shape!
Happy New Year!!  GET SEWING!!

  52. Wow, this turned out so beautifully! I'm so glad I've followed along, and I'm excited to put everything together. And a little nervous. Ive got my parts laid out on the ironing board, and they don't look nearly as wonderful as this, so I'm still going to have to trust that mine will come together this nicely. Thank you so much, Bonnie for this intriguing mystery. It's been more sewing than I've ever done in such a short period of time, and definitely more pieces than any quilt I've ever made (this will be my third). I know I've improved in my sewing and piecing from doing this and I'm excited to have my first truly scrappy quilt. Happy new year to everyone!

Bonnie, you are truly an amazing and talented woman!

  68. Bonnie, thank you for this wonderful scrap pattern. This is the second mystery quilt I have made of yours, and I really appreciate the time you put into designing the quilt and posting the instructions.

I confess I got behind on step 5 and am slowly making progress on my quilt. I know quilting is not a race, and I know my top will be completed in January, so I'm ok with not being able to keep up with the clues.

I am just wondering how many hours you sew a week. It seems like with all of your traveling, this quilt would have taken you weeks to finish too. Do you do all your own sewing or do you have teams of sewing elves who make you 100s of strip blocks or HST's?

I ask because I don't think I could ever attempt a project with so many pieces on my own. I feel like I have a group of quilting buddies cheering me on when I work on one of your mysteries.

Thanks again for being so generous with you patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Wow! Love the final layout and the border. Can't wait to get my top finished this week, and to see other tops completed. Thanks for a fun end to 2011 and a great beginning to 2012! :-)

  73. Wonderful, wonderful quilt! I have lots of work left to do on mine. I wonder what it would look like with yellow stars in the center of the dark Ohio stars blocks, to resemble more closely the original photo of the Orca Bay sunset. There's a lot of yellow in that photo. Well done, Bonnie, and Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  74. My Oh my ---- I NEVER would have done this involved of a quilt if it hadn't been for Bonnie! Thank you so much for this adventure. As I was working on the blocks the past few days I was listening to Sherlock Holms on my IPod, not an intentional aspect of working on this project, but just occured that way :).
I hope to have many more Bonnie Hunter mystery quilts in my future!

  75. First of all: A very happy, healthy and creative 2012 to you and your family!

  76. I worked half the number required in the pattern. I think it will work out well 5X5. I don't mind a square quilt. This one is positively lovely. I have most of the blocks up on my design wall and am quite stunned at how wonderful they look.

Bonnie, thanks so much for putting this together.

  79. OOOH, so gorgeous, so original in the way you put together all the parts. I had guessed that the red stringey flying geese units could go on the sides of the Ohio stars, but the numbers did not add up, so I thought my theory had to be wrong! Never in a million years would I have guessed this fabulous design! Now I really have work to do.

  99. Bonnie, each mystery you do seems to be even more outstanding than the last! And they have all been fabulous! I sewed into the wee hours of the morning so I would have all my components ready for today. Didn't realize you would post this amazing reveal so early. I needed the sleep and rest anyway! :) I've done about half your mysteries, and filed the rest away for a later date because they came at a time when life was too challenging time-wise. I will do the the other mysteries at some point. Have also done a lot of your other patterns too. I probably have 10-12 Bonnie Hunter quilts now. I have also purchased all three of your books and am excitedly looking forward to book number four. I find much inspiration in them. I also peruse your free patterns on your web and blog regularly for inspiration. This is getting long-winded. Just to finish...I was astounded at how beautifully this quilt went together, and I love how you kept it mixed up and kept us guessing right to the very end. I also love how you incorporated the border units into the instructions in such a way as they were finished along with the quilt body parts. It also made it harder to guess the finish. Love, love, love this fabulous design Bonnie. Thank you so much for the fun! Oh,and my colors choices were the same as yours for this one. Stunning! Thanks ever so much Bonnie. Jean

  110. I am so glad that I made the string blocks instead of playing it safe with yardage. I went with brown and blue instead of black and red because those were the 2 colors overflowing in my scraps. And I am happy to say they were all used up making this quilt! Even after seeing the Big Reveal, I am excited to finish my version. And the border is awesome....really adds to the entire quilt design. THANK YOU for sharing your design.
