Orca Bay, Part 7!

We are SO CLOSE to having this together --- can you feel it?  It’s all starting to come now that we’ve got the Ohio Stars from Part 6 assembled!

I’ve heard from so many that the Ohio Star is their favorite block.  It’s one of mine too, and I love playing with all the different ways you can color the block to make it look different.  It was fun doing the positive/negative thing with the block colors by rotating the hour glass units, wasn’t it?

And to keep the fun building --- and the excitement going --- I have news for you!  We’ve got part 7 today, and just for a surprise --- I’m releasing part 8, our Conclusion – on NEW YEARS DAY!  So you will want to come back on Sunday, Jan 1, 2012 to see how it all comes together!

There is just no putting it off…we need this revealed! And I know many who are home for New Years who would like to continue to sew – so let’s do it, shall we?

In Part 7 we are going to turn our Red String Triangles from Part 4 and our Wing Triangle units from Part 5 into giant pieced flying geese--

2011mystery 245

Did you guess these fit this way?

2011mystery 246

Line up the diagonal edge of the black wing triangle unit along the right side of the red string triangle.  If your dog ear is clipped on the black triangle as mine is, you’ll notice that it looks short, but it is not.  By the time it is sewn, you won’t see it at all, and that red dog ear will be trimmed off when we are done.

Sew a black triangle unit to the right side of 127 red string triangles.  You will have one Red String Triangle left over. Press seam out toward the black triangles.

2011mystery 247

Position a black wing triangle unit on the opposite side, lining them up, and stitch.  Complete all 127 string goose units. Press seam out toward the black string triangles.  Ooohhh! I see those Maryland Crabs making eyes at me..LOL! LOVE IT!

These units will measure 3-1/2” X 6-1/2”.  Trim dog ears.

If you are a “Squarer-Upper”  ((Actually, Squarer-Downer is more like it!)) There is something I want to caution you about.  Be CAREFUL when trimming that you don’t trim so much that you lose your seam allowances around those neutral triangles.  You need those to join the units together into the quilt…I’ve seen people who square down with reckless abandon, and then when they join their blocks, Yes, the OUTSIDE dimensions might be correct mathematically, but there is no WAY they can get points to line up because they chopped them off.

I would rather pin carefully, match points, and adjust my seam allowance instead of just whacking everything off to be some “perfect” size --- that makes the units impossible to stitch together “perfectly.”  Get my drift?

If the seams are so OFF that your unit is wonky….instead of trimming everything beyond recognition--- FIX. YOUR. SEAM!

Oh – and those black Wing Triangle units we made in Part 5? Yes..those ones that you still have 96 of?  I have a confession to make.  I forgot ONE thing – I need you to make 4 more.  Yes – just four. It won’t take you long!  After the step above, you still need 100.

You can cut them out and even assemble them as leaders & enders while we work on this next part if you want. Just bring the total of wing triangles left to 100.

2011mystery 250

This next step involves cutting into those neutrals again!  I used my Easy Angle Ruler and 3-1/2” strips to cut the 100 neutral triangles needed for this step.

If you are cutting with regular rotary cutting methods, you are going to need to cut 50 3-7/8” Squares, and slice them once from corner to corner on the diagonal to give you the 100 triangles needed for this next step.

2011mystery 244

Match a Wing Triangle unit with each of the 100 half square triangles you cut above.  Stitch them with right sides together and press toward the neutral triangle.  I always press the path of least resistance for patchwork that lays flatter, even if the unit I am pressing toward is the lighter of the two.  If you have any shadowing going on, grade your seams by trimming your black part of the seam allowance less than 1/4”.  This helps it not to show through the front of your work.

These units will measure 3-1/2" at this point and finish at 3" in the quilt.

2011mystery 249

Got 100 of these?  Okay…now make TWO of these:

2011mystery 184

These look the same as our Hourglass units in Part 1, but they are BIGGER.  These hour glass units measure 3-1/2” and will finish at 3” in the quilt.

2011mystery 181

To make these units I used 2” strips and the 2” line on my Companion Angle Ruler. I cut 4  matched pairs, two pairs from each strip set –so I’d have two blocks with 4 different fabrics each.  It didn’t matter if they have the same fabrics between the two of them, just not all the same in each block.

If you don’t have the Companion Angle Ruler, Layer a 4-1/4” neutral square with a 4-1/4” black square with right sides together.  Slice twice with an X from corner to corner to yield 4 pairs.  The only thing is…you are going to have to do this TWICE…with another set of squares, to give you the variety you need to have each hourglass unit from 4 different fabrics.  So you’ll have two spares --- you’ll find a place for them somewhere!

2011mystery 182

Sew the 4 pairs all facing the same direction, with the light on the top.  Be consistent or they won’t fit together when you open them up to press!  See my cheddar bowties as my leader/ender at the top?  MY BASKET IS FILLING!!

Press these pairs toward the dark triangle, and match pairs – sewing them into 2 hour glass units as shown above.

Come back on SUNDAY, JAN 1st for our big REVEAL party!

  7. This is turning out to be my birthday present to me! My birthday is January 1 and I will get to spend the day working on my quilt! I just have to finish part 7 between today and tomorrow. Well, duh, shouldn't have expected anything less, right? lol We have company today, so I won't get to start sewing until late afternoon or tomorrow; but I just had to sneak in and get the clue. Thanks for all the fun, Bonnie. And for the upcoming early issue of clue 8.

  10. No, I don't remember the triangles from step 5. Okay, so I'm still working on step 5. Can't wait to see how this turns out. I'm loving my fabric choices. However, I'm sad this is coming to an end. This is my second Bonnie Hunter mystery, and can't wait for your next one. Thank you do much for putting on these mysteries. They are a lot of fun...and beautiful!!

  11. Oh, I love this. I wish I wasn't so far behind so I could make these, but I don't have step 5 done or very many red string units. I am hoping to rectify that today though, so maybe there is hope for getting at least a few of these done this weekend.

  12. Wohoo, off to do some sewing! Thanks for pulling the final reveal ahead, so we all can start the New Year sewing our brains out!

  13. Ohh - so many exciting pieces - can't wait to see how they all fit together... I hope to spend all weekend sewing and ignoring housework :)

  14. While I'm certainly not the sharpest pin in the pincushion, I never considered myself as the dullest one, either. LOL

I've had 2 "DUH!!!" moments with your quilt, Bonnie. BTW, I'm thoroughly enjoying this first-time-for-me Mystery Quilt.

Someone wrote a comment on one of your posts, referring to the black and white and how it represented the Orca whale.

DUH!!! would you believe I had been whining to myself about all these black and white fabrics and wondering HOW you saw so much B & W in your picture?!?!? Then, when that commenter wrote about Orca whales... it hit me between the 2 eyes! YES, I laughed at myself!!!! *still chuckling over here*

Second, since I can't remember making an Ohio Star... or at least this many, 2 days ago I decided to sew the strips with ALL the red center blocks. They're all the same, right?

    WRONG!

Another "DUH!!!" moment, when I looked at them, yesterday morning. An hour or so later, I had finally ripped out the strips that would have the WHITE/NEUTRAL squares to them.

Sorry 'bout the long post. Just felt like sharing this morning. LOVE Part 7 !!!!

Tks for doing this, FREE, Bonnie!!!

  16. Bonnie,
I am loving the blocks and can't wait for the finish. I am behind but have enough of all the steps to at least do some of the blocks completely. Thanks for a great mystery and such patience and dedication to do this for us all. Happy New Year to you and all. G

  18. I'm so happy I finally bought my two new rulers,
I'm having a ball learning how to use them and seeing how quick and easy they have made piecing this mystery! Thanks for "teaching an old dog a new trick" :0).

Happy Sewing and Safe travels........now who is sitting in 1st class?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Of course, the two steps I haven't finished!! Not that I'm whining ;o) Good thing I'm off work at noon PST, and have no plans for the weekend so I'll be sewing like crazy. Thanks, Bonnie, this has been a great challenge!

  20. Well I clearly am clueless in where the mystery is headed. I was almost convinced last night that the red triangles were going to go onto the Ohio Stars but then realized the math was all wrong for that. What a clever mystery this is turning out to be!

I'm going to be working on a different, one day Mystery this Sunday but will be sure to look in first thing in the morning to see Part 8 and dream of putting more parts together later in the week!

But for now I'm off to work on Part 7 and more of part 5 which I had only made a few of previously. So exciting!!!

  21. Hee hee - I spotted the Maryland crabs even before I read the caption. And is that a piece of the infamous cow fabric right next to it? Awesome!

I haven't been able to play along with this mystery, but I sure am having fun watching it unfold anyway.

  22. I just love those red strippies with the black flying geese...on each side. I may have to do this too...Aaaaargh--I am going to have to sit down with my New Year Resolutions and put my "to-make" list in order.

  23. I've following the Orca Bay discussion...just couldn't fit it in when it started. Today looking at all the clues so far, I had to print them off! I get to take classes with Bonnie in TX tomorrow and Monday! So blessed by her gift of patterns and by having a wonderful family that understands my quilting obsession.

    Bonnie,

I am sooo behind on this but am determined to finish it in 2012. I am teaching a beginning quilt class at my local Jo-ann fabric store and I only have 2.5 hours in the basic class to get them started. Do you have any hints for me? I have to cover rotary cutting, pressing, basic quilt terms and very elementary piecing. I am going to use a nine-patch and a rail fence. Thanks for any help you can offer.

  29. Congratulations to you! Bonnie, you are marvalous! I just had a gander at the blogs and noticed how many are participating in this mystery! It is so great to see friends from so many different areas! Quilting binds the world! You should be proud. Thanks for all you do and have a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!

  30. I'm going to be off in my corner doing a happy dance. I decided today was a sew day and I'm caught up :)

  31. Is anyone else having trouble getting the size on this right? I'm coming up at 1/4" too long and 1/8" too wide and it's not my seam allowances that are the problem. My red triangles were cut from 5 1/8" squares on the diagonal which makes them 7 1/4" wide x 3 1/8" high before I add the black corners.

  33. Lucky MEEEE! I have the next 4 days off from work! I'm going to get all caught up with my Orca Bay..... I better, I work at a nursing home, and was showing one of the residents my blog, and the blocks I've made. I told her I'd bring it in when it was done. She asked if I thought she'd still be around to see it - Yes, she's in great health, and has quite a sense of humor.... :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ok, I confess: I redid Part 7 and was able to get it the right size using Bonnie's directions. I had to go with a pretty much out and out 1/4" seam instead of a scant 1/4" like I usually (think) I do. I'm learning!!
