I’m pulling a fast one on you, and I hope you are up for it! I’m giving you Part 6 a day early ----Merry Christmas!
I think I did this a couple of mysteries ago, and it sure was fun, so heck yeah, I up for doing it AGAIN! And those of you who don't want to start til Friday, well, just disregard this post and come back......Tomorrow! :c)
Celia wrote:
So in between the cookie baking and everything else, I thought about it and thought about it and ---sure, why not! I can write the directions a day early, and clear my OWN slate for the busy weekend!
I admit it..it isn’t easy for me to release this clue because the old “Who let the cat out of the bag?!” thing will start to ring true! Up to this point, no one has had a clue where this is going! And for me, a successful mystery is one that stays pretty mysterious all the way to the end, but at some point, clues start adding up and we kind of gotta “Let it out of the bag” don’t we?
This clue starts with some fabric cutting:
From Black Fabrics: Cut 112 2-1/2” squares
From Neutral/Light Fabrics: Cut 112 2-1/2” squares
from Red Fabrics: Cut 56 2-1/2” Squares.
Are you ready for some actual BLOCKS!? Did anyone guess Ohio Stars? We are going to combine these squares you just cut with our hour glass units from Part 1!
We are going to do 28 with light backgrounds, and 28 with black backgrounds for a total of 56 stars….ALL have red centers!
Layout block pieces as shown. Stitch block units into rows, and join rows to complete each block. Press. Make 28 with Neutral backgrounds and a red center square ----
Blocks will measure 6-1/2” at this point and finish in the quilt at 6”.
We’ve had great participation with over 80 people showing their progress on their blogs—as I write this! AWESOME! Won’t you share your progress with us? And visit those who do? It’s great to see what others are doing as they work with their own scraps in their own colors for this mystery.
And just a suggestion--- If you are starting to feel behind in your own mystery progress, just do what you can through the week on the step that is given that week, and move on to each new step as each step is given so you have an idea of what to do when you have the time to get caught up.
If you need the links to previous Orca Bay Mystery parts and previous Mystery Monday Link-Ups, they can be found in the Orca Bay Mystery Tab at the top of the blog!
Happy Part 6, everyone!
Merry Christmas…Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, Welcome in the Winter Solstice, oh----just Happy EVERYTHING!

What a nice surprise! Thanks. Love the blocks.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I've been given an early Christmas present. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bonnie! The only other thing in the sewing room that I have in the works is a lighthouse quilt and I have one huge block yet to make. I have been putting it off because it is gong to be a bear to make. Now I don't have to! I can work on Orca Bay instead. I like the look of these blocks.
ReplyDeleteThanks from down under for doing it a day early. It is 10.30pm Thursday night and I am waiting for my daughter to arrive home after flying from Melbourne to Sydney.
ReplyDeleteLove the stars they are soooooo cute and the colours work together so nicely.
Merry Christmas
Hi Bonnie, I´m happy about, but I miss something. Where do I get those black and white triangle blocks from?
ReplyDeleteTina, did you figure they're the quarter square triangles from Part 1?
ReplyDeleteThanks Bonnie, something to dream about until I get to my fabrics.

WOW!!! was I ever floored!!! Part 6 came out early AND it's an Ohio Star!!!
ReplyDeleteFINALLY, something concrete, IMHO, to look forward to! *grin*
Now, if I can just finish Part 3, move onto part 5 and THEN, do Part 6. S'fun that you're giving us permission to jump around on these "parts".... otherwise, I'd be bored senseless, knowing me! (DH can't understand why I just don't FINISH a part before moving on!)
Once again, Bonnie.... thanks a bunch!
And Merry Christmas!

Early clues - priceless! Wonderful holidays to you, Bonnie - and your family!
ReplyDeletePeggy - IL
I actually said "Wow!" I was so surprised and pleased! This is the first mystery I've actually done (instead of just reading along) and am doing it slowly because of all the other projects in the room. First time I've done string blocks - what was I waiting for. I LOVE them. And first time for using the two rulers I've had for years. Look what you've taught me so far! THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Bonnie, and "Happy Everything" to you, too! Your mystery is such a gift already and now this clue a day early makes for more fun! As for me, I never guessed Ohio Stars.
ReplyDeleteWAOUUUUUUUUUUUU I'm too happy to see it !!!! THANK YOU BONNIE and

Thank you Bonnie and what a surprise. For a moment I panicked thinking it was Friday and I am so not ready for the big day yet. Three frantic shopping/cleaning/cooking/sewing days to go.
ReplyDeleteHave a safe and Merry Christmas.

ReplyDeleteYay! Christmas came early to the mystery quilters! Thank you, Bonnie, and thank you Debra in MA for tipping me off.
ReplyDeleteI actually had a bunch of my Step 1 pieces up on the design board in this layout thinking they *might* be for Ohio stars, so this is a pleasant surprise indeed...I didn't, however, guess we'd be doing two color ways. Very cool!!
Merry Christmas, Bonnie! And, thank you for the unexpected early gift!
ReplyDeleteLinda in Southern Illinois
Ohio Stars, yeah! (Not that I have started the mystery yet.)
ReplyDeletehanks Bonnie! It is so nice to see this-even though I have been so busy with Christmas gifts that I haven't even started my red strings yet.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas!
Adding it to the other 5 that I might be able to get crazy with next week and get things moving along with this mystery. I am soooo far behind. But today I have a million other things that NEED to be done, so this will have to wait. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the gift, Bonnie! I'm having so much fun with this quilt!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Celia and Bonnie. I don't know if I'll get any time to work on it before Monday, although I hope to, but it rests my mind to know what step 6 is. I love the Ohio stars.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, thanks for the great surprise - Merry Christmas to you and yours!
ReplyDeleteThank You for the early clue. I too want to sew all night tonight. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and glad to see you were able to spend time baking with one of your boys this week. My boys have helped me last weekend. Great fun.
ReplyDeleteDug though the 2.5 inch square box this morning and made a block just so I could hang a "finished" piece on the design wall...thank you!!! Now back to the last step....
ReplyDeleteGreat! Now I just have to wait for my 20Yo Dear Son to wake up and get out of my sewing/spare room!!!
ReplyDeleteWow - thanks a lot, and ( haven't even started sewing the past step yet - but all triangles are cutted.
ReplyDeleteFreaking A !!! Ohio Stars!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am a happy camper now! Literally, we are going camping and I can prep my blocks to take along.

YAY! I feel like I just opened another birthday present--my birthday being yesterday. I won't get home from So. Cal to No. Cal til after 10 tonight but you can bet I'll be cutting those squares in my head on the plane home! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI've just got enough progress with Part 5 to add to the linky and I see part 6 is already released!! I know I won't get to this part until after xmas, but I know it's ready for me. Thanks for the fun Bonnie :)

ReplyDeleteLoved getting the step early! Thank you so very much. Happy Everything to you too. I spent yesterday at a friends cutting -- using her rulers. Having her show me really -- found out my REALLY old small Easy Angle was off by 1/8th inch so used her to get wings cut and red strings trimmed. I was ready for todays step today!! I love not having to wait. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Allison in North Texas
ReplyDeleteOh So COOL ... thanks for the Early release. It is six am here in Tasmania and I am going to be running fast to get everything done for Christmas in two days time. I have a little time this morning to get this all prepped ready to work on over the weekend in the quiet times. Ohio Stars ... oh this quilt is going to be beautiful. Merry Christmas Bonnie.
ReplyDeletePS... your posting with your son brought tears to my eyes ... so moving and lovely. xx
Two hints that y'all probably don't need, but I'll post them anyway.
ReplyDeleteFirst, it really helps to wash your acrylic rulers every now and again. Discovered it wasn't my tired old eyes, or a bad light bulb. Really makes a different.
Second, heehee, it really helps to read the instructions. I didn't and had to unsew because I didn't rotate the hour glass block. Bonnie gave excellent instructions, even posted a picture, but did I pay attention, noooooooo. I was just too excited to finally get started on putting this together.
Thanks again Bonnie.
What a great early Christmas present. I was trying hard not to guess, but if I had been, Ohio Stars would have been first on the list. Now I'm off to find some squares!
ReplyDeleteI just got a chance to look at my FB and a surprise was in store for us. You are something else Bonnie. Thanks so much for all you do. How many times have I said that?
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas,
Maryella
Oh what a fab surprise! Thanks so much! I am actually working on a quilt for my brother that has a similar block but they call it variable star- and the dark parts of the hourglass are against the center square- the opposite of yours... Thanks for all the quilty fun Bonnie. I am behind in it due to my brother's quilt but ready to get going!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness I picked up a yard of a black tone yesterday! Can't wait to get started on these, thanks for posting a day earlier and Merry Christmas to you and yours Bonnie!
ReplyDeleteWay cool !!!! Orcas in Ohio... fabulous.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to make one black to see how it looks in my colors.
Wow... Clue #6 is EARLY! Woopee. Thank you, Bonnie.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your "everything" cartoon. What a hoot!
Merry Everything to you, too!
Hugs,
Cyn; -)
Thank you! I had a couple of free hours this morning and got to see some of my blocks together! I was sure I'd have to wait until Monday to find sewing time. This was so nice! ~Jeanne
ReplyDeleteBonnie, Thanks so much!!! How did you know I have all day tomorrow OFF work, lol. This was a double Christmas present!!

Thank you for posting this early--even though I'm still working on those endless black triangles.....I did stop to make one block. Quick question, is there any particular way we should be pressing the blocks? I'm assuming all the rows should go one way?
ReplyDeleteWoohoo, clue 6, well Ican't wait to put one together. Although I just finished my red strings today and starting on those black triangles. Love Mystery Quilts by Bonnie
ReplyDeleteBonnie, you are always a breath of fresh air! Thanks for everything, the blog, the mystery etc.. it keeps us inspired. Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteYES, I can do this while glamping. Thank you for sending it a day early Bonnie. Yes in austrlia we have to wait until Saturday morning to see the clue so it's great to wake up on a Friday to find - AND tody is he day we are packing, so I can happily include material in packing. Have a Merry Christmas Bonnie.
ReplyDeleteOh Bonnie, these are gorgeous! I love Ohio Stars. Merry Christmas to you and your family--I hope it's everything you could wish for and more!

I'm so happy stars are included. Thank you for such a Merry Christmas present Bonnie, and I sure hope yours is Merry! Julia, still in Missouri calnjul@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteBonnie,
ReplyDeleteI haven't posted as I started a little late and don't have much time to sew. I do have Part I complete and some of Part 2 done. I hope to work on 3, 4, 5, and 6 this week. Thanks so much for this great Mystery, the first one I've participated in. Guess I'll be looking forward to next year like most of the others. Doing mine in greens and blues and hoping it works nicely. Merry Christmas to all.

Hi Bonnie and everyone. I'm loving this so much I will follow you into a mystery quilt anytime! A friend talked me into it and after starting on the 20/12/11 I have already completed the reds, the blues, the stars and am currently fiddling my way through the orcas. I'm careful where I go on your site as I don't want to see the finished masterpiece, this needs to be a surprise.
ReplyDeleteTo add to that, I cut some of my red triangles along the strips instead of across them to add even more interest, RISKY! Annie from Oz.
