Orca Bay, Part 6!! Merry Christmas From Me!

I’m pulling a fast one on you, and I hope you are up for it!  I’m giving you Part 6 a day early ----Merry Christmas!

The seed was planted yesterday morning when I read a post from a quilter in Australia who asked if please, please please could I pretty please send it a day early so they can work on it on Friday too?

I think I did this a couple of mysteries ago, and it sure was fun, so heck yeah, I up for doing it AGAIN!  And those of you who don't want to start til Friday, well, just disregard this post and come back......Tomorrow! :c)

So in between the cookie baking and everything else, I thought about it and thought about it and ---sure, why not!  I can write the directions a day early, and clear my OWN slate for the busy weekend!

I admit it..it isn’t easy for me to release this clue because the old “Who let the cat out of the bag?!” thing will start to ring true!  Up to this point, no one has had a clue where this is going!  And for me, a successful mystery is one that stays pretty mysterious all the way to the end, but at some point, clues start adding up and we kind of gotta “Let it out of the bag” don’t we?

This clue starts with some fabric cutting:

From Black Fabrics: Cut 112 2-1/2” squares
From Neutral/Light Fabrics: Cut 112 2-1/2” squares
from Red Fabrics: Cut 56 2-1/2” Squares.

Are you ready for some actual BLOCKS!? Did anyone guess Ohio Stars? We are going to combine these squares you just cut with our hour glass units from Part 1!

We are going to do 28 with light backgrounds, and 28 with black backgrounds for a total of 56 stars….ALL have red centers!

2011mystery 241

Layout block pieces as shown.  Stitch block units into rows, and join rows to complete each block. Press.  Make 28 with Neutral backgrounds and a red center square ----

2011mystery 242

Make 28 with black backgrounds by rotating the hour glass units, and filling in the corners with black squares, and  a red square for the center. Stitch block units into rows, and join rows to complete each block. Press.

2011mystery 243
Blocks will measure 6-1/2” at this point and finish in the quilt at 6”.

Don’t forget to check back on Monday for our Mystery Monday Link-Up! Monday’s Link-Up for Part 5 is still being added to --- your chance to link won’t end until midnight Eastern Time tonight, so add your link there if you haven’t yet!

We’ve had great participation with over 80 people showing their progress on their blogs—as I write this! AWESOME! Won’t you share your progress with us? And visit those who do? It’s great to see what others are doing as they work with their own scraps in their own colors for this mystery.

And just a suggestion--- If you are starting to feel behind in your own mystery progress, just do what you can through the week on the step that is given that week, and move on to each new step as each step is given so you have an idea of what to do when you have the time to get caught up.

If you need the links to previous Orca Bay Mystery parts and previous Mystery Monday Link-Ups, they can be found in the Orca Bay Mystery Tab at the top of the blog!

Happy Part 6, everyone!

Merry Christmas…Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, Welcome in the Winter Solstice, oh----just Happy EVERYTHING!

  3. Thank you, Bonnie! The only other thing in the sewing room that I have in the works is a lighthouse quilt and I have one huge block yet to make. I have been putting it off because it is gong to be a bear to make. Now I don't have to! I can work on Orca Bay instead. I like the look of these blocks.

FINALLY, something concrete, IMHO, to look forward to! *grin*

Now, if I can just finish Part 3, move onto part 5 and THEN, do Part 6. S'fun that you're giving us permission to jump around on these "parts".... otherwise, I'd be bored senseless, knowing me! (DH can't understand why I just don't FINISH a part before moving on!)

  16. I actually said "Wow!" I was so surprised and pleased! This is the first mystery I've actually done (instead of just reading along) and am doing it slowly because of all the other projects in the room. First time I've done string blocks - what was I waiting for. I LOVE them. And first time for using the two rulers I've had for years. Look what you've taught me so far! THANK YOU!

I actually had a bunch of my Step 1 pieces up on the design board in this layout thinking they *might* be for Ohio stars, so this is a pleasant surprise indeed...I didn't, however, guess we'd be doing two color ways. Very cool!!

  52. Oh So COOL ... thanks for the Early release. It is six am here in Tasmania and I am going to be running fast to get everything done for Christmas in two days time. I have a little time this morning to get this all prepped ready to work on over the weekend in the quiet times. Ohio Stars ... oh this quilt is going to be beautiful. Merry Christmas Bonnie.
PS... your posting with your son brought tears to my eyes ... so moving and lovely. xx

  53. Two hints that y'all probably don't need, but I'll post them anyway.

First, it really helps to wash your acrylic rulers every now and again. Discovered it wasn't my tired old eyes, or a bad light bulb. Really makes a different.

Second, heehee, it really helps to read the instructions. I didn't and had to unsew because I didn't rotate the hour glass block. Bonnie gave excellent instructions, even posted a picture, but did I pay attention, noooooooo. I was just too excited to finally get started on putting this together.

    Thanks again Bonnie.

  79. Hi Bonnie and everyone. I'm loving this so much I will follow you into a mystery quilt anytime! A friend talked me into it and after starting on the 20/12/11 I have already completed the reds, the blues, the stars and am currently fiddling my way through the orcas. I'm careful where I go on your site as I don't want to see the finished masterpiece, this needs to be a surprise.
