Can you believe we are half way through December and already up to Part 5 of this mystery? I plot and plan and look forward to this time all year and ZOOOOM ------it’s gone and we are into next year! Someone slow this down just a bit please, I’m not ready for 2012 yet!
This week’s step should be fairly easy for everyone, though there WILL be some cutting involved.
Remember those 350 half square triangle units we did in PART 3?? This week we are going to build on those just a little bit….We’ll be adding some wing triangles to these!
First off, Saska asked when you were going to get to see pictures of my strip drawers! SO..since I had to pull black 2” strips out to cut for this demo –I’ll show you the 2” "colors" strips drawer!
It doesn’t look like much..but I’m so thrilled with how easy this is to get at now…without disturbing anything else in the drawer! See the black ones….3rd baggie from the left in the front row…
Pull out the baggie…and simply unroll the stack, and they are right there for easy access…easy to roll back up and put away too because the drawers are right under the table where I’m working.
When cutting with the Easy Angle ruler, I like to cut through no more than 4 layers at a time – but at least 2. Things wiggle less if there are at least 2 strips. Layer your strips, it doesn’t matter if they are right sides together or not…just layer them and cut. Use the 2” marking on the ruler, and cut 700 ((Yes, 700!!)) individual triangles. If you are cutting through 4 layers at once, it will go fairly quickly.
If you are NOT using the Easy Angle ruler, cut 350 2-3//8” squares, and slice these from corner to corner on the diagonal to yield your 700 wing triangles.
Following placement in the photo above, you are going to sew 1 wing triangle to the right of the light side of the corner half square triangle unit, and one wing triangle to the bottom against the light triangle as well.
**Note** My blacks are scrappy, I'm just showing 2 units here...all the triangles do not match each other ever ---anywhere in my quilt. Random blacks throughout.
You will notice that the notched edges may sometimes end up toward the center, or sometimes at the outer corner of your unit. This matters not. Any which way is fine. It’s just a missing dog ear and you won’t have to worry where that falls, it will be gone in the next seam.
Here are 2 pair with their first wing triangle sewn on, ready to sew the second ones on. Press seams out toward the wing triangles just added.
Here are two of the units done! Only 348 to go! Because there are two seams on the side of each corner half square triangle unit, it should take you approximately twice as long to add the wing triangles as it did to piece the half square triangles that you did in Part 3. Because we are getting closer to Christmas, I’m going to leave it here and show you what to do with them next week!
These units would measure as 3-7/8" triangle units, IF the dog ears are in tact on both ends! Is it missing a dog ear as the ones in my picture? The left side should be 3-1/2" tall. The bottom edge will be 3-7/8" wide, because it has the dog ear intact.
Oh, and any dog ears in the MIDDLE?! CLIP THEM OFF!
Our next clue will go live on Dec 23, the day before Christmas Eve.
Don’t forget to check back on Monday for our Mystery Monday Link-Up! Last Week’s Link-Up had great participation with over 100 people showing their progress on their blogs! AWESOME! Won’t you share your progress with us? And visit those who do? It’s great to see what others are doing as they work with their own scraps in their own colors for this mystery.
And just a suggestion--- If you are starting to feel behind in your own mystery progress, just do what you can through the week on the step that is given that week, and move on to each new step as each step is given so you have an idea of what to do when you have the time to get caught up.
If you need the links to previous Orca Bay Mystery parts and previous Mystery Monday Link-Ups, they can be found in the Orca Bay Mystery Tab at the top of the blog!
Happy Part 5, everyone!

OK! Thanks Bonnie! Seems like it should be easy enough! Tho' I am still ploughing through Step 4. Strips at 3/4" may look good, but sure do take time!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the prompt posting of clue#5.
ReplyDeleteI will jump right on it...
XOXOXO Subee
47 half width of strips should yield 705 HST
yay, we're BUILDING ON something!! that's great, hmm I think I'm low on dark blue, I will have to see if mine are light or dark..... should be fun! how many clues are there?
ReplyDeleteOh! How exciting! I can't wait to see where we go next! I am off to sew! Thanks so much, Bonnie.
ReplyDeleteNow I NEED to trim my step 3 blocks. Sort of excited to add more yellow to my quilt (black is my neutral background).
ReplyDeleteAlmost done with Step 4. Can't wait to start on this Step 5. Little nervous I'm telling you all though, I tried to slice off my index finger last night with the rotary cutter trimming on Step 4. Good grief, that sucker is sore this morning!
ReplyDeleteOh...........I am so woefully behind. I will catch up after Christmas though. When I am no longer working 12 hour days and working my days off too. I hope to get some sewing done today, but I do have a million other things to do as well. Someone told me I only have 9 more shopping days left before Christmas, I haven't even started yet. Later...........instructions are printing.
ReplyDeleteooohhh - can't wait to start cutting more black triangles! Thanks Bonnie - this is SUCH fun!
ReplyDeleteI am not able to join in BUT I sure lover reading all the posts and excitement as others a taking the plunge! One day~ when and if life slows down~ maybe :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the much needed diversion Bonnie!!

glad I'm not the only one who enjoys these even if I'm not taking part. Living vicariously! and that Easy Angle ruler well worth the money if you don't have it.
ReplyDeletehi, I'm from Ontario, and so far I haven't been able to find the easy angle ruler. Sure wish I could! lol
DeleteWhoopee, getting to build on something!:-) My colors are playing very well together. This is going to look fabulous when completed. But I need to play catch-up and finish Step 4. It's over half way, but there was just too much going on here this week to get it all done.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, your strip drawer looks great. I should seriously do some organizing and my stash isn't even all that big.
Thanks for such a fun project!
I love this. Wondering though if we can use blacks with a bit of color in this step? I am so glad that I decided to join in this time instead of just watching. Hope everyone is taking time to enjoy the season.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! Your mystery feels like a modern advents calendar to me: every Friday you can open another door to Bonnie's magic quilting!
ReplyDeleteBonnie! Thanks so much for all of your patterns - I hope to be organized by 2012 and hope to get back into the groove of sewing up a storm. Merry Christmas to you and your family and a Blessed and fantastic New Year!
ReplyDeleteThis is so FUN - I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind - and I don't even care!! I LOVE your mysteries and I'm having a great time fiddling with all of these little pieces!! ;))
ReplyDeletePlaying catch-up w/Part IV (as I see others are, too ;-), but should be able to get a few triangles cut later this afternoon and possibly a few pieced this evening. This clue really stumped me and not something I was expecting, but sure is interesting and having a blast!
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying the heck out of this, but have to say that it really is a mystery - I have absolutely no idea where it's goiong!
ReplyDeleteNow if I had only made those HST!
ReplyDeleteBack to the sewing machine :0).
thanks Bonnie, this is getting more fun every week
Happy Sewing
You are a gem...thank you! I am loving popping over and 'visiting' different people, I wouldn't have done if it hadn't been for you...so thanks again *~*
ReplyDeleteI couldn't wait to get home from work today to see the next clue! Hopefully I'll be caught up b/4 the next one, #1-done, #2 - half way done, #3- done, #4 all sewn up, not trimmed, I think I'm doing pretty good - AND I'm learning how to do a BLOG - dosen't look too good yet, but hope to try to post the Orca Bay block soon!
ReplyDeleteI had to leave everything in France for the holidays, but before I left I had up to step 4 complete. The French ladies in my quilting group think I am crazy! But I must say, it looks great and is very scrappy since I have dug into all of those scraps I could not toss and had to keep. I have noticed that when put in a box together, in the privacy of their own box, blue scraps will multipy. The same is not true for red and light fabrics.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bonnie- I am having fun!
ReplyDeleteHaving a WHALE of a TIME (literally! - I have baby whales in my Blues and Reds!) with this Mystery! BUT, NOW I need to go finish Step 3 so that I can start step 5 - Before FRIDAY??? I don't think I'll make it!!!!
ReplyDeleteFinished part 5 yesterday. Learned something. Blacks are hard to see and if you have a light wt. fabric (like my solid black) it is a pain to get it from pushing down into the plate. Took me forever to get these done and I had to re-do several of them where my triangles were apparently the wrong size and to small. But got them done finally. : )
