For The Love Of Yellow! ((Giveaway!!))

I do love yellow…I admit it! Anywhere from pale butter yellow, all the way to marigold, and everywhere in between. As a quilter, I am all about the punch colors! And for me, yellow is right up there with cheddar and red! And yes, there is a Giveaway at the bottom of this post, but you gotta read all the way down there to get to it. No skimming!

So I’ve been kitting up stuff to take to Oregon with me, and you can see here my wide array of yellow solids. My question for this quilt kept going back to this:

Do I want to stick with ONE YELLOW ((The SAFE route, right?!)) For the Florabunda quilt, or do I want to let loose with different yellows as in the antique quilt that started this whole MUST MAKE NOW craze?!

I’m leaning toward different yellows. I really am. When I look at the quilt with ONE yellow…blocks join in the corners to form one big yellow square with 4 seams in it. If I am going to have 4 seams there anyway, why not add a bit of something to make that piecing worth while?

florabunda 011

I’ve got 4 blocks sewn. Yes. Only 4. I know some are nearly ready to put their whole tops together, or get the binding on --- and I’m straggling at 4..but hey! It’s progress! Subee just posted that hers is DONE! YankeeQuilter's are well on the way!

florabunda 009

See how the two different yellows come together in the center? I like that. Where when it was one yellow, it was just not as interesting. So I’m going to go with it!

florabunda 010

Here are my 72 blocks worth of floral strips, all cut and ready to go! I still have to cut the yellows, but will get to that.

All this yellow got me thinking about the other yellow quilts I’ve made, and I went upstairs to the guest room closet to pull this one out:

florabunda 015

The pale yellow looks even more faded in this picture, but the paths ARE yellow! I made this grandmother’s flower garden, every stitch by hand, in the regular “add a 1/4” seam and just piece it the regular way” style. I’m thinking of when it was started…we bought our first home in 1992….and I know I started it before that. I remember tracing the templates on the fabric and cutting them out one at a time when Jeff was TINY. Jason was in swim lessons --- and I’d bring this with me and stitch the blossoms during the lessons. So it dates around to 1990 and a bit after. Funny how you can date quilts by where you lived when you were making them?

florabunda 016

Do you recognize some of these prints? Oh, some were definite FAVORITES of mine! This quilt also taught me why I should never use warm and natural batting for a hand quilting project! >_< It was like quilting through cardboard! My how things have improved since then! You’ll notice there is no binding. I simply turned the front and the backing 1/4” to the inside and blind stitched it closed, and then went back and quilted 1/4” from the edge of the quilt to finish.

Yellow in antique quilts always makes me giddy! Here are some I’d love to share with you!

9patchyellow2

Look at these golden yellow sashings for this great country style 9 patch! There is an idea for you….have some blocks that need to be set? Try yellow!

yellow6ptstar1

Lovely 6 pointed star with yellow background! I love how the yellow just adds the “HAPPY” element! Yellow, Aqua and Red? Yes please! And throw in some pink for good measure!

yellowdresden1

I loved the shape of these dresden plates! Of course, I would have scrappied them up a bit, but yellow is a great background for this 1940’s quilt!

yellowdresden2

I just love the shape of these dresdens! Flat blade/round blade/flat blade/round blade…Cool, yeah?

yellowstringstar1

Now THIS top has my heart! I’ve been a string piecing fool over the past year, and I’m still not making much of a dent! Isn’t this just so classic against that yellow? YES PLEASE!

yellowsplit4patch

And this one is a bit grainy, but I think you get the idea! How simple! Scrappy split-4-patch blocks with alternating yellow squares….LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

yellowweddingring1

And what is not to love about a gorgeous scrappy wedding ring on solid yellow?!? What really caught my eye and made me smile is that some of the rings follow a pattern, some do not…and the red/white 4 patch connectors all turn different ways. DOUBLE YES PLEASE!

So are you wanting to sew something yellow?! I have here up for grabs….a pattern and template to get you started!

florabunda 017

This pattern and template can be yours just by leaving me a comment below! The template makes a 4” mini windmill block. You could go to town on your scraps…and punch it up with some YELLOW! Are you game?

I’ll draw the lucky winner after the fireworks on 4th of July. That’s Monday….we’ll give it the long weekend to make it available to all!

I’m off this morning for a SEW DAY at Karen’s! Lisa and Miz Shelby will also be joining us! Have a great Friday everyone!

  2. OMG... I love yellow and those quilts are fabulous! Especially love the nine patch...

  3. This quilt also taught me why I should never use warm and natural batting for a hand quilting project! >_<
That comment is soooo true. I am working on a queen size Wholecloth quilt and it has Warm and Natural as the batting. This was started in the 90's. I wear out needles with this! The stuff is like cardboard. Perhaps I need to drag it out and unstitch what I have done...hummm
As to yellow...I am working on a Grandmother's Flower Garden and the path is a cute yellow with teeny tiny white circles. I also have an entire bolt of a butter yellow paisley.
I would so like to win your template. But even if I do not win I will be so happy for the winner. Anything from you is fantastic.
    XOXOXOXO Subee

I was so thrilled to see your title "for the love of yellow". Yellow is my favorite color. If I could I would paint most of the rooms in my home some shade of yellow but alas others live here too.

I love how the yellow just adds the “HAPPY” element! Same here.

"Lellow" as Sarah called it when she was little has been her favorite color since she was two or three. When we bought our house, she wanted a "lellow" house and it was, well, kind of beige-y-yellowy if you looked at it right. Now, 16 years later, we are repainting and using a lovely golden yellow...finally, Sarah has a "lellow" house!

Thanks for the great show of yellow quilts. My favorite yellow quilt is a double nine patch I made and quilted for my mother the year before she died. I used BRIGHT yellow as her eye sight was nearly gone. When I gave it to her I held her fingers and ran them over the hearts quilted in the plain squares of the blocks--a few weeks later I came into her room and found her running her fingers over them again but bless her heart she had the quilt upside down and did not even know it. Just knew there were hearts in those blocks that she could pick out cause of the bright color. Sorry such a long post but a special "yellow" memory for me. Bonnie, all of your quilts are just so lovely and inspiring. I normally put yellow into just about even wanting to paint our bedroom yellow. Hubby is not happy about the choice. LOL I have so wanted to make a double wedding ring and how inspired I am by yours. It does look so much better with yellow in it. Not the traditional white (boring).

With my new sewing room soon to be done, a windmill wall hanging would look great with some of the old furniture I am planing to spray paint yellow and add green leaves/flowers on them.

  100. I am one of those quilters who like to put some yellow in every quilt I make. It's such a happy colour (that's Canadian for color! LOL)and if not the star attraction, it is worthy of second billing IMO. Keep on inspiring us Bonnie - I always read every word of your posts!

  106. Wow - thanks for sharing the yellow quilts!!! I am absolutely in love with the Wedding Ring! I also have a GFG that I hand-cut, hand-pieced, & hand-quilted started in mid-80's. It is one of my most treasured quilts - probably because I will never make another 'hand' one LOL!!!! But also because I made it for my grandmother but was not able to complete it before she died. I feel wrapped up in her arms each time I snuggle under it.

I vote for scrappy yellows in your Floribunda!!!! I'm going to go that route as well, but since I'm absolutely at zero on solids in my stash, I'm going to have to go with small prints that primarily read as solids as much as possible. Hopefully I'll find enough 'busyness' in my florals that the prints will not stand out too much. I haven't even started!!! On my way tomorrow to visit grandbabies in Carolina, and then I plan to start my Floribunda as soon as I return. Yippee!!!!!

  114. I love yellow, both to wear and in quilts. My favorite quilt made by my mother is a Grandmother's Fan scrappy quilt. But, the background is royal blue and the base of the fans is bright lemon yellow. Stunning!

    ReplyDelete
  115. I also love yellow in quilts! Especially antique yellow and reproduction type fabrics! These quilt pics made my day!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I definitely planned on using a variety of yellows like in your antique and that is what I bought! But thank goodness for this post -- I hadn't realized that the print fabrics were supposed to be all florals! Don't know how much of those I have so mine might wind up being a little more scrappy and use other prints as well.

Oh, I vote for many different yellows in your quilt It just gives so much texture and movement to a quilt to have the variety of solids and prints.

Love your blog and your quilts. On my blog you can also see my take on your bricks and chains quilt. My Jacob's Ladder was started before I found your blog, though. It's always been a favorite.

  170. Yellow does make a Happy Quilt. I'm playing with my scraps when I should be cleaning, they are so abundant I have to deal with them. Company's coming so it's stash them in a tote time now. My Shoe box tote is almost full of 2.5, 3, 1.5 and 2" squares. I'm saving them for a scrappy something soon. I'll save some scraps for the template, just in case I win! Thanks Bonnie! Wish I could meet you in Oregon at Sisters...

  174. I'm not interested in the giveaway, but I had to read and leave a comment about yellows because I love them. I am considering doing a 2nd Dear Jane quilt in yellows (Daffodil Jane is the imaginary name I've come up with). The only problem is, I don't have a lot of quilts using yellows. I tend to play it safe... except for the Civil War Quilts block of the week, I made the Blockade block with a variety of yellows. That one is one of my favorites.
