I do love yellow…I admit it! Anywhere from pale butter yellow, all the way to marigold, and everywhere in between. As a quilter, I am all about the punch colors! And for me, yellow is right up there with cheddar and red! And yes, there is a Giveaway at the bottom of this post, but you gotta read all the way down there to get to it. No skimming!
So I’ve been kitting up stuff to take to Oregon with me, and you can see here my wide array of yellow solids. My question for this quilt kept going back to this:
Do I want to stick with ONE YELLOW ((The SAFE route, right?!)) For the Florabunda quilt, or do I want to let loose with different yellows as in the antique quilt that started this whole MUST MAKE NOW craze?!
I’m leaning toward different yellows. I really am. When I look at the quilt with ONE yellow…blocks join in the corners to form one big yellow square with 4 seams in it. If I am going to have 4 seams there anyway, why not add a bit of something to make that piecing worth while?
I’ve got 4 blocks sewn. Yes. Only 4. I know some are nearly ready to put their whole tops together, or get the binding on --- and I’m straggling at 4..but hey! It’s progress! Subee just posted that hers is DONE! YankeeQuilter's are well on the way!
See how the two different yellows come together in the center? I like that. Where when it was one yellow, it was just not as interesting. So I’m going to go with it!
Here are my 72 blocks worth of floral strips, all cut and ready to go! I still have to cut the yellows, but will get to that.
All this yellow got me thinking about the other yellow quilts I’ve made, and I went upstairs to the guest room closet to pull this one out:
The pale yellow looks even more faded in this picture, but the paths ARE yellow! I made this grandmother’s flower garden, every stitch by hand, in the regular “add a 1/4” seam and just piece it the regular way” style. I’m thinking of when it was started…we bought our first home in 1992….and I know I started it before that. I remember tracing the templates on the fabric and cutting them out one at a time when Jeff was TINY. Jason was in swim lessons --- and I’d bring this with me and stitch the blossoms during the lessons. So it dates around to 1990 and a bit after. Funny how you can date quilts by where you lived when you were making them?
Do you recognize some of these prints? Oh, some were definite FAVORITES of mine! This quilt also taught me why I should never use warm and natural batting for a hand quilting project! >_< It was like quilting through cardboard! My how things have improved since then! You’ll notice there is no binding. I simply turned the front and the backing 1/4” to the inside and blind stitched it closed, and then went back and quilted 1/4” from the edge of the quilt to finish.
Yellow in antique quilts always makes me giddy! Here are some I’d love to share with you!
Look at these golden yellow sashings for this great country style 9 patch! There is an idea for you….have some blocks that need to be set? Try yellow!
Lovely 6 pointed star with yellow background! I love how the yellow just adds the “HAPPY” element! Yellow, Aqua and Red? Yes please! And throw in some pink for good measure!
I loved the shape of these dresden plates! Of course, I would have scrappied them up a bit, but yellow is a great background for this 1940’s quilt!
I just love the shape of these dresdens! Flat blade/round blade/flat blade/round blade…Cool, yeah?
Now THIS top has my heart! I’ve been a string piecing fool over the past year, and I’m still not making much of a dent! Isn’t this just so classic against that yellow? YES PLEASE!
And this one is a bit grainy, but I think you get the idea! How simple! Scrappy split-4-patch blocks with alternating yellow squares….LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
And what is not to love about a gorgeous scrappy wedding ring on solid yellow?!? What really caught my eye and made me smile is that some of the rings follow a pattern, some do not…and the red/white 4 patch connectors all turn different ways. DOUBLE YES PLEASE!

How can a person not love yellow? I'm 1/2 Swedish and the colors of their flag is blue and yellow. I've already made 1 blue and yellow quilt and have a few more in the planning stages. So I can always use yellow. Thanks for sharing all of your wonderful patterns - I only have 3 or 4 of yours in process. Every time I look at your designs, I find another one I want to make.

It is from an antique quilt which had pink for the 'plain fabric' blocks but I know I needed something else. Didn't think of yellow but now know what will fit perfectly. Funny! I'm not a big fan of yellow, but I love all the quilts you showed. I brought my blocks for my blue sampler quilt (my first quilt!) to the quilt shop for help picking sashing and border fabrics, and what did we come up with--yellow! It really set the blocks off, but was probably the last color I would have thought to try. Glad I had their expertise to help me!

I did make one quilt for my niece made of lemon yellow, bright blues and bright greens, each block was a different star pattern. ReplyDeleteI was looking at the enlarged picture of your 6 pointed stars quilt and some places I could see the Tumbling Blocks pattern very clearly. I suppose it is because of the colours and the fabrics used near each other. But it gave the quilt a different look altogether.

Since I tend to use a more"primitive" look to my decorating, I use more of the gold tones than the yellows, but I'm thinking that a 30's repro mini windmill with lots of yellow and a mix of those happy sherbert pastels will be part of my to-do list! The guest room needs a new look!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is definitely YELLOW. Since I can't wear it (washes me off really bad) I use it in many other ways, specially yellow flowers. The very first antique quilt I bought is a baby quilt with 1930 prints dresden plate block, on white background and bright sunshine yellow sashing and binding, Couldn't pass on it when I found it a few months ago at an antique shop in Ozark MO. ReplyDeleteJust thought I'd share this with you. When I turned 60 a few years ago I stopped listening to what other thought I should wear or what I should use in my quilts. Butter and creamy yellows have become my 'new' nuetral!..Love to wear it now in bright sunshine yellow too. LOL I'm doing exactly what makes ME happy now. So bring on the yellows!!

The only thing yellow that I can think of that I own is my Yellow Labrador Rudey!! ReplyDeleteYellow is one of my favorite colors. I have several quilts in the works with yellow. One I"m using it in is the Ocean Waves pattern posted on your site. I've been putting it together with your leaders and enders method. I've gotten all the 1/2 square triangles done, now working on getting the block 1A finished. Can't wait to get it finished. There's nothing like working on 2 quilts and once!!

I've taken classes, practiced till my fingers bled and never even THOUGHT the problem could be my batting choice (always warm and natural!)Thank you. I feel better about trying again. And yellow is one color I don't have in my stash because I thought I didn't like it. Your quilts changed my mind, that's for sure! Can't wait to see more! As always, thank you for sharing.

ReplyDeleteI love the idea of yellow in a scrap quilt. I've always used shirtings but you've inspired me to branch out. I always learn something from you. I'm ready to hand quilt a special quilt. I've never thought much about batting since I normally machine quilt. I'll choose carefully this time!

Bonnie, I have only twelve of the 36 floribunda blocks made, but I am using a solid green instead of the yellow, just because I had it in my stash. ReplyDeleteI didn't like yellow until a couple of years ago. My younger sister passed away unexpectedly. On the day of the funeral, my work colleagues arrived at my house with the most wonderful arangements of yellow flowers. They said " these are to remind you of the sun, and if you keep your face to the sun, you won"t see the shadows". Since then, I have always taken yellow flowers to people who are in need or suffering - and with the same message. I now plant yellow in my garden as a reminder.

ReplyDeleteWhen asked what is my favorite color, I reply happy colors, and since I am a scrappy quilter and cannot contain myself to just one I simply reply "my favorite color is the color of the season" and yep YELLOWS are one of them.
ReplyDeleteOh, I just love some yellow! I tend to use it to punch things up a bit and not as a focal point, but I promise that if I win that I will make a concerted effort to include yellow in the quilt in a big way! Thanks for having this contest, too!

Thnx for sharing these great yellow quilts. After the extremely long, dreary, extra gray winter/spring we've had here in the pacific northwest I could definitely use some more yellow!

ReplyDeletedear Mrs. Bonnie...thank you for opening my eyes to the joys of scrap quilting. Following your blog and your travels have made me a better quilter ~ much to the dismay of my family. They have to cook & clean more often because I'm busy creating. =) My grandma passed away in Feb and LOVED yellow roses..we quilted together and I can't come across yellow without wonderful memories of her. =)

Love all the yellow quilts! Yum! I am laughing at myself, as I hope to win. I have my (XXL) stash sorted by "type" (Civil War, 30's, florals etc)> And after rummaging through it a hundred times gathering more of needed colors for RRCB (p.s. I *love* that quilt! Thanks!) & now again for browns/blues for Smith Mountain Morning, & possibly again for yellows for this...I am thinking a full stash re-org could be in my future. Love the yellows but I think quilting through W&N is not like quilting cardboard. It is more like quilting through a brick.

I love yellow. Seldom wear it but like it for any other use. Someone way back in my beginning quilting thought every quilt should have yellow in it.

Never "Loved" yellow ... had a quilt instructor once who was about 90 yrs. old and said she would never make a quilt without yellow in it. Still never understood until I saw your examples and now my mind is running wild and yellow fever may have struck! Wow, do they pop or what! I remember when it was hard to find yellow fabric. It adds such a glow to scrap quilts! It would be fun to make a scrappy mini windmill.

OH, how I love yellow! I have a yellow quilt on my bed all winter long to cheer me up on dismal days. I have twice as much yellow fabric as any other color. I love the golden yellows that edge onto orange best, but any nice clear yellow will do. Too bad I can't wear yellow for clothing- I look jaundiced in it. But I have my share of yellow scarves and pins. You can never have too much yellow- never.
