Show and Tell Thursday!

Well, yesterday didn’t go as I planned! If you read the PS on yesterday’s post you’ll remember that I hopped in the car, put the key in the ignition, and…click click…rrrrrrrr…nada!

It’s a good thing that DH works only 6 miles away (A big reason we bought this house, we wanted a close commute!) and was able to come jump-start the car. It drove fine for the rest of the day, but I got a bit of a late start, and by the time I was done running my errands, and headed home, it was near 5pm! Still, it was so great to meet up with Nane and pick up the display quilts, and meet Karen for lunch and a quilt shuffle, giving her display quilt back to her..the big pass off! ((This is as close to football as I get!))

I’ve also got a weird thing going on. Around lunch time my eyes started feeling itchy. A couple hours later they were puffy, gritty and red and narrowed to little slits I don’t know if this is an allergic reaction, but my first thought was “Benedryl”. We ate dinner, I got in my jammies, and I went to BED by 8:30pm because the light from the TV really was too bright for my poor eyes.

I slept 12 hours! And they are still sticky and puffy this morning, but not as bad I don’t think. Kind of a fluke thing.

SO! Due to lack of ANYTHING quilty yesterday, and no stitching going on in the basement today---I want to do a Trunk Show Thursday!

I received a lovely email from Claire with some photos of quilts she’s made! She writes:

I wanted to write and say how much I have enjoyed your website and your book Scraps and Shirttails.  This year, I whipped up a Sister's Choice for a wedding gift.  It came out great.  I recently finished 2 quilts from your book.  My father passed away last December, and I made these quilts from shirts (some his, some not) as Christmas gifts for my mother and my brother in his honor.  Everyone loves the blue and white one, especially my husband--I may have to make another one for him!  I am really hooked on "shirt-quilting" and plan to make at least 2 more of your patterns.

I love the springy colors she used for her sister’s choice quilt….this pattern is one of my faves! We’ve all got 6” 9 patch blocks we’ve swapped either on the net, or via our guilds, and they are the perfect starting point for this quilt. Super simple block, but it looks so great when the quilt is set together! I don’t even think some quilts need borders, and I like how she just bound this one when it was the size she needed!

The other two Awesome!! I love the “Swing Your Partner” with the red border, and the “Union Square” quilt is made with the center block from the “Shirttails” quilt. Both of these are from “Scraps & Shirttails I”. I LOVE the red accent cornerstones in the Union Square, and see how effective that red stripe inner border is? It’s just a bit of a hint of a color, and wow…what a nice finish! And look! She’s used the buttons in the center of each red cornerstone!

Here is the center of this block with the “Brooks Brothers” label plainly visible! Crisp blues and whites with a hint of red….I just love this!

Claire, thanks so much for sharing your beautiful quilts with me. It’s wonderful to get a glimpse into your world, and find out just where these quilts end up!

It’s Still Here!!

I can’t tell you how many times during the day I had to pop back over here just to check if this new blog was still here! Yep! It is!

It’s also a bright sunny NC January morning! And that means it’s an errand day for me. I’ve got to go meet Nane at the bagel shop and pick up some quilts that Karen and I have had on Display with our Bee in Yadkinville through the month of December! I get to be the go between because Karen and I are meeting for Lunch later at our favorite Indian place—Nawab!

And there are all other little piddly errands too, post office, bank, prescription drop-off and fill at Sam’s Club, and perhaps a hair trim in there somewhere for me. It just all adds up to a day AWAY from the computer, which I think I need!

Look at these lovely fabrics that Janette sent me from Australia!  I am SO in love with this Kangaroo fabric, and I’m brainstorming on sewing something really fun with them. I’d love to combine all of these beautiful florals with a bunch of plaids and stripes. Just need to find the right pattern! ((And some time?))

I’ve gotta scoot! Just have a terrific day today Y’all!

PS. Well so much for that! I just went to get in my car, and it's deader than a door nail and won't turn over!? Seems like it is time for a new battery -- DH is on his way home to give it a jump-start and see if we can also add a trip to get a new battery added into the line-up today. This is the 2nd time it's done this in a couple weeks and 2 times is 2 too many!

That Darn Cat!

I guess “Boys Will Be Boys” no matter what the species!

Night before last I noticed that Oscar was pretty much back to mimicking the activity of a door stop ---- Not eager to move too fast, and he yowled when we tried to pet anywhere near his tail!

From there we noticed that he can not even LIFT his tail, and you know cats use their tail for balance and stuff, right? A cat that can not hold its tail straight up in the air is a cat with a tail problem!

Further inspection proved that he has been in a bit of a scuffle, most likely with another cat in the neighborhood. ((I shudder to think it would be a conflict with a raccoon or a possum!)) And there were a couple healing scabs on his tail, and in his forehead ---- was that an imbedded cat claw point? Oh, OSCAR!!

The base of his tail was hot and puffy, but no sign of puss. We had a bottle of antibiotic in the fridge left from his chest-fluid-ordeal and started him on that. I’m giving it until tomorrow to see if he is getting any better or not. Cat-spit is SO nasty even to other cats!

I think even though he is “laying low”…he is doing better. He snuggled on the bed with me and resumed his purring this morning. Oscar! Can’t you just stay out of trouble and stay happy and healthy for just a little while?!

So on to another topic….someone PLEASE keep me away from any and all recycled fabric sources! I don’t think I have the strength to say NO if you invite me to go, so I need you to be strong for me and not encourage me to come along!

It seems that when things are in boxes, bins or closets, and stay behind closed doors and lids, they are out of sight and mind and seem so MANAGEABLE! But what happens when you start digging for stuff? I needed red and blue recycled fabrics for borders and a binding, and while digging I was pulling stuff to send Tonya too…and in a matter of minutes I had THIS:

OH oh oh! I forgot about most of these until I unearthed them! See that red paisley thing on the top? ((Click the pic to biggie-size it!)) It was a pair of capris, and the fabric is GORGEOUS! Very much resembling that French General line or whatever it is….it just looks….OLD…and very French! I whacked off a leg and put it in the box to Tonya and saved some for my borders….and that batik-y looking blue shirt beneath it….off goes the sleeve! I don’t have time to dis-assemble everything right now, too many other irons in the fire, so I’ve packed away whole boxes of clothing to cut down! It lives in BOXES in the “under the stairs” closet here in the basement. Out of sight…out of mind, right?

 

More bins and boxes of pieces/parts and I tell you, this is not ALL…The tubs to the left are the shirts I’ve already cut down, just waiting for projects! These are mostly backs and fronts…the sleeves and yokes have been stripped into useable sizes already..and the cardboard box to the right? Never let it be said that Bingo-Bonnie won’t give you the shirt off her back…..errrmmmm….make that sleeves, collars and yokes! This box came as a surprise in the mail, and I was able to use some of these pieces and parts in the borders and binding of the quilt I’m finishing too! Thanks Bonnie!

Does January put you in a de-junking frame of mind? With me, it’s like someone has flipped a switch --- and I go into purge purge purge mode. It starts with putting holiday stuff AWAY! I didn’t have much to do this year, but I moved the Christmas dishes back to their resting place, and put the “every day” dishes back within reach..and from there it just went to the next cupboard, and the next and…..uhoh…the dreaded tupperware graveyard!

THIS!!  ALL OF THIS! It had to go…..this is all the lids with no bottoms, all the bottoms with no tops….and it was hogging the whole cupboard and always a mess and I could never find anything! So….GONE! Bye bye! And I feel so much better!  ((And behind them you can see the bread box my mom painted for me years ago..I love it!))

This also lead to going through the pantry cabinets and checking ALL the food items for things that had passed their expiration date. Yes, I admit it. I had stuff that expired in 2008. Have you done that lately? You don’t have to fess up if you don’t want to, but I found an un-opened box of saltines way in the back that I thought was NEW!! 2008. GAH!! Sometimes I think it is not such a good idea to stock up if I am going to forget that I even HAVE this stuff…especially if it is perishables!

This is EXACTLY how I am feeling this morning, bopping here in my chair. This song just makes me want to get up and DANCE!

The men folk have gone to their prospective jobs - - - Yes, The holidays are “officially” over and the house is mine for the day and I can get down to business! ((Once the song is over….pardon me while I go dance a bit more!))

First off – An announcement! I woke up to an email from Madame Samm over at Sew We Quilt @ Stash Manicure that they want my post to go live THIS SATURDAY! Oh My! Seems there is a conflict with who they had scheduled, and we are swapping places. This works great for me actually, as I don’t head out to Lincoln Nebraska for my visit with the Lincoln Quilters Guild until Sunday so the timing is perfect! I can do a post there, and upload a new quilt for you here, and get out of town!

So I’m off and running today. The quilt for Saturday still needs quilting and binding! And I need to write the finale for Roll Roll Cotton Boll! It’s going to be a busy week in the basement…but I’m ready!

And it’s good that I have lots of THIS left-over because it’s going to make dinner so so easy for me while I’m doing this:

Yeah It’s a bit more than half gone, but we have had it TWICE already! This is the 16 bean & ham soup that I made after Christmas on Thursday --- It was our power lunch for quilting the tie quilts, and fueling us for our run to Ikea. It fed us the day that Mr & Mrs Goodneedle came over, filling the house with delicious smells. And it is one of those that definitely is better the next day! This also makes a LOT and freezes really well.

And I’m sorry the crockpot looks a bit well….cooked! But this is real life photography, not Cuisine TV. I’ve had requests for the recipe so here you go:

Crock pot Ham & 16 Bean Soup

1 ham bone with plenty of meat attached!

We had a spiral ham for Christmas, and when cutting the slices off, I knew I was going to be using the bone for this soup so I was generous with what I left! You can also use a couple of ham hocks, or diced ham steak.

3 cups 16 bean mix, dry!

Rinse beans and pick out any broken or other bits.

Place beans, ham bone, and 1/2 of a diced onion in a large crock pot and cover well with water. Cook on high for 6-8 hours until beans are tender and meat falls from bones.

Remove meat and bones, trimming any cartilage, fat and removing bone fragments. At this point I shred the meat. I like it better shredded than having it diced into little cubes. Return meat to pot. Add more water as necessary.

Chop 2-3 carrots and 2 stalks of celery and add to soup. Throw in 2 bay leaves and a tsp of oregano. Cook until veggies are tender.

Taste broth to determine how much salt it needs. Ham is salty so I don’t do this until last! Salt to taste, and add cracked black pepper to taste as well.

And this is the best part! Add 3 Tbl brown sugar ((this cuts the bitterness of the beans)) and 1/2 tsp dry mustard powder! YUMMY!

Of course this meal has to be served with cornbread topped with honey butter. Oh how I love my crockpot and how easy it makes my life ---

Fun in the Basement!

Hello!

Just me peeking in from the basement! DH and son have been SO engrossed in the football yesterday that I hid down here and finished a UFO top! YAY! Actually, it's one that was going to go in Scraps & Shirttails II, but we ran out of room and had to cut something, and this was the one that was not finished yet, so it became the target.

But it's not a problem! I love this quilt.....and now it just needs borders! So that's on the agenda for today. AND! I have a special guest interview coming up on Feb 7th with Stash Manicure, and in conjunction with that…..I’m going to upload the quilt and the pattern for you here on my blog, AND do a guest post on Stash Manicure on the SAME DAY! ((exciting!!)) So -- by leaving a post at both places, you will be entered in a drawing for Scraps & Shirttails II! I’ll be giving away two copies, drawn from the comments section of both blogs. How cool is that! Keep watching for reminders, I’ll be sure to let you know when it is time!

See the little cute vase of button flowers in the corner up there? Isn’t it so cute!!? These would be so darling and easy to make as gifts! ((Vase ala IKEA!))

Lisa brought this over on Friday when Mr & Mrs Goodneedle were here in the basement trying to help a friend see if it was her quilting MACHINE that was causing her issues, or her compu-quilter itself! We hooked her computer to my machine after much effort and near dead-ends and found out that it’s her computer, not the compu-quilter part, but the computer itself, and boy did it make MY machine run like a drunken sailor! So I hope she can get it fixed.

The occasion made the perfect opportunity for DH & Mr Goodneedle to both discover that they are Playstation Grand Tourismo (sp??) racing fanatics. Now Mrs Goodneedle and I just need to get these guys together so they can virtually purchase, race, and smash up cars so we can do Quilty-Stuff!

A box from Florida!!! And look what I found when I opened the lid:  A message from Pokey! ((bite, bite, bite, bite, bite!! >^..^< )) This made me laugh out loud!

What was inside the box?

Fabric!!!!  Tonya has been finding me BRIGHT TROPICALS in the recycled shirt department! It’s amazing what she can find down there in Florida that I can’t find up here. There are palm trees and tropical flowers and all beautiful sherbet colors!  AND!!!

I’ve got two copies of Word Play Quilts in my hot little hands!! One for me, and one for a GIVEAWAY!! I’m thinking how I’m going to run this yet. In the next couple of days I’ll let you know when/how we are going to do it, but I am so excited she is letting me do this! ((See those wonderful hawaiian style fabrics?!))

New Year’s Eve, Farewell, 2010!

I’m so happy so many of you are thrilled with the mystery revealing! I’m always so nervous with that…what if people don’t like it! I know it has been a stretch --- And I am aware that it is a huge leap of faith as well for you! ALL those weird neutrals into string blocks! But don’t you feel GREAT about cleaning out so much STUFF?! I know I do. I started out with a whole big comforter bag (You know, the zippered bags you buy bedding in? Aren’t they great?) full of unwanted neutral stuff, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE how my quilt turned out!

I’ve had a fun couple of days --- Yesterday morning Lisa and Shelby came to play Chez Quiltville and we started quilting on these little memory quilts for a lady that Lisa knows ---made out of her father in law’s ties. While we were at the beach, Lisa sat and took all the ties apart and fused them to some very light weight interfacing….stripped them down into random widths and started string piecing them onto paper foundations on her featherweight. There is SO MUCH FABRIC in a tie! I had no idea! But when you take it apart and unfold it all…wow…ideas ideas ideas!

No, I am restraining myself from accumulating more recycled fabric in tie form. I have boxes and boxes of fabric from shirts and other articles of clothing that need to find their way into quilts. If I start up with ties --- I have to start a whole ‘nuther stash! Not going there. Well, not yet anyway!

Can you see the texture of the quilting? We used a black thread, so it’s hard to see, but I tried to get the light right. They are only about 36” square, one for each of the children who’s father wore the ties. I think they are a great tribute, and a neat way to preserve those memories. There were some WILD ties, let me tell you!

Can you see the texture and quiting now? Some of these prints are so beautiful I kept wishing they were available in COTTON!

Yummy Yummy! I just love string anything…but this was so neat, I couldn’t resist petting it---OFTEN!

After the second quilt was quilted, and the third one bordered, we decided we had had enough for the day, and jumped in the car and drove to the Ikea in Charlotte! Was this a good idea? on an almost holiday weekend? NO!! Let me tell you, if you go --- do it on a week day when kids are in school! It took us 2 hours to wander the aisles and pick up goodies we wanted NEEDED! I came home with a soap pumper for my kitchen dish soap that I HOPE will not spew soap from any where other than where it is supposed to come – every other pumper I’ve tried leaks around the cap.

We topped the shopping trip off with a stop to the snack bar for the best $1.00 Cinnamon Roll that I’ve had. It could be that I was just ravenous from all that quilting, driving and shopping? But no --- they are really good!

Here’s a pic of Chloe for those who asked how she is doing --- She is here to wish you Happy New Year, too! She contentedly lives outside, soaking up the sun on the front porch. She’ll come when I put food out for her. She will begrudgingly let me pet her while she stuffs her face in the bowl, but she does not purr, and she is not lovey, and you can not pick her up. She really is quite the pain in the rear, and it’s a shame because she is so beautiful! I hope she is doing her job keeping rodents at bay, etc. I feel bad for her because I know how tormented she was before she came to us, and maybe this is the best we can give her, a sunny spot by the front door, food in her belly, a safe place to call home even if it is outside!

Happy New Year Everybody! I’ve got a cozy spot on the couch waiting for me, and a quilt just waiting for more stitches as the ball drops!

Quilter's Insomnia?

Okay. This is getting ridiculous! I feel like this kitty!

I always heard that as we age that we sleep less. Or have trouble sleeping. It hasn't often been my problem, but this past couple of weeks.....

My body says "Go to bed" and I do. My mind says "Think Think Think" and won't shut up. I toss and I turn and I will myself to do things like remember each and every place I've lived, wander through the houses of my memory, hoping that will bore me enough to drift off, but nada!

Something's gotta give! I'm afraid of sleeping pills. I don't want to get dependent on them, and I don't want to feel like a zombie the next morning.

IS THIS HORMONAL!? Have you been through this? What do I do?

Lisa is on her way over this morning to work on the silk tie quilts! I can't wait to see them. We are going to quilt them up simple, and just play for the day. I will force myself to NOT NAP in hopes that I can get a decent night's sleep tonight ---

On-Point Sashing Chart!

I love On-Point quilts! The one I’m working on now has 72 blocks set 6 X 7. How many sashings , corner-stones or setting triangles does this Quilter need for these kind of layouts? The chart I usually use is missing the sizes for quilts set 5 X 6 and 6 X 7! This meant I actually had to do some MATH!

I thought having such a chart could be a handy thing, and this kind of math should only need to be done once, so I’m uploading it here!

And yes, it’s missing sizes for quilts set 8, 9, 10 wide, but I want to get back to sewing, so I’ll add those sizes as needed!

Dog Days of December ---

I feel pretty much like this! Our wood stove has been roaring toasty warm, and I can’t even twist my own arm to want to leave the house for any reason at all. More hand quilting on the couch, more watching episodes of Bones on netflix, more SADIE stretched out in front of the wood stove in a bliss of heat. She hasn't left her spot in front of the fireplace all week! ((I haven't much, either for that matter!))

It’s nasty out there. It’s cold and icy and the snow has not decided to leave the ground yet. I’m typing with fingerless gloves on in the basement to get this written! It’s cold outside, and it’s cold down here! ((Which is why I’ve enjoyed my evenings up on the couch so much!!))

Yes, I can put a fire in the wood stove down here too, and I will – I will – When I decide I want to stay down here long enough to enjoy the whole fire, not just part of it.  Like TOMORROW – When Lisa is coming to work on some silk tie quilts! Poor Karen, she is being drug to the beach house with her family, no sew day for her! Next time Karen!

This time of the year is great for reflection. I have SO MUCH to be thankful for! And I am absorbed in thoughts of gratitude.

I’m also realizing that I have learned so much this year. I’ve grown a thicker skin!

This is a good thing, especially when I become more and more aware that I can’t please all the people all the time, and I am focusing my life on being more genuinely ME than I am trying to be what people want so they will like me. Does that make sense?

I have learned that I can’t control another person’s behavior or to make them feel what they are incapable of.

I want to live in the NOW instead of pushing it all to SOME DAY I MIGHT.

As far as resolutions go? Those might help some people, but the one thing I really want to work on is just being more AWARE of what is going on around me. Every day counts. Every moment counts. Don’t just go through the motions.

Since losing my Grandpa in June, since my online friend took her life in October, since another friend’s cousin lost one of their 13 yr old twins in a senseless car crash the weekend after Thanksgiving, I am just more aware of how short this life is.

This year, 2011, I will be practicing the ABC’s of Genuine Happiness! I hope you will join me.

So we count down to 2011!
