New Phone #

I went and changed my cell phone # from a SC one to an NC one. We have decided with this move that we are going to try life WITHOUT a land line, since all three of us have cell phones. Has anyone else out there done this?

I figured ONE of us should have a local prefix and phone number, I guess it's going to be me! So my phone will be the designated "home" phone number for anything that requires a home number with a local prefix/areacode.

We were on vonage, so it was only $25 a month on top of the internet connection, but every little bit seems to add up and we are trying to cut back in places of unnecessary spending.

If you have my old number written down or saved in your cell phones somewhere, you might want to change it! The new number is (336)749-3202.

  1. What are you using for internet? We'd get rid of the home phone except we have DSL and then we have satellite instead of cable but you're right . . the little things add up and we need to find some places to cut back too.

  2. That's a great idea and I'd love to do it. Shall I tell you how much cash I'd save?

Alone and without a landline to 911 is scary for me though. I'll admit it. Chicken.

  3. If your cell reception is excellent then you should be ok. But I do have the same question about internet access.

  4. If you have internet access - you might want to consider a Skype phone - we have a Skype phone number that is a USA prefix so my family can me (at a local rate) no matter where I may be in the world! If I am away - it goes into voicemail. And it only costs about $25 per year for the phone number, Skype to Skype is free (we call everywhere in the world!), Skype messenging is free, and IF you want to call a land-line - it is easy to add money to your account and the cost is very little per minute (handy to call my sister on her landline because she can't figure out Skype!!!). Check it out - you might like it!

    Cheers!

  5. Ooops! Forgot to add - seeing you have so many readers - while people are updating their cell phones - they should add I.C.E. into their phone too. Emergency Medical Tech's would really appreciate it!!! It stands for In Case of Emergency and would make contacting your loved one much faster in an emergency situation.

    Cheers!

  6. I have cable TV and cable internet here. In SC we had satellite TV, and cable internet. The Vonage works with the cable internet...

We can't get the satellite tv here because of the trees...they came out and told us so, so we HAD to go with cable. DH says why bother with non-hi-def satellite due to the tree interference, when you have hi def TVs! (Just like a man) so...here we are with cable, which costs more than satellite..and we need to recoup the money somewhere, so the house phone land line is going to GO. We'll try it for a while anyway and see how it goes...

  7. We haven't tried to go without a home phone but we did keep our old cell phone numbers from Georgia and it hasn't been a problem for us.

My youngest son hasn't had a land line since he moved out 2+ years ago. He just uses his cell and it's worked OK for him.

  8. My daughter and her husband have never had a land line--they have been married 3 years and have seen no need to get one.

Someone mentioned 911--on some cell phones you can dial 911 and the phone itself has global positioning so they can tell right where you are calling from...I think that may have to do with who you use for cellular service. (Right now I just have a very basic Trackfone and it doesn't offer it...however since I don't use a cell phone much, cannot afford the expense of $70 a month for 2 phones when between the two of us we would use maybe an hour!!!)

  9. When we lived in DC, we only had cell phones. land line came as part of the package with out cable & internet - so we have on now, but we use the others far more often than the land line...

  10. We have kept our land line, but only very basic service. However, our son has had only a cell phone for years and years...and loves it! It is attached to him, goes everywhere he goes!

  11. When my sister was living in London they only had cell phones. She is now in LA and has cell phones and Skype. Perhaps you should look into Skype as an alternative.

  12. I will be watching to see how this works for you. We are moving next year and are discussing this issue now.

  13. Yes, we have lived without a land line now for nearly two years. I realized that every weekend I was dusting the phone, handset and all, and that we literally never used it. We were going over costs, etc, and realized that this $43 a month was completely wasted. No regrets and no problems without it. Just wonder where that $43 a month is going now - probably the gas tank!

  14. I've had the Comcast triple deal for just over a year. I figured out I saved a bit of money over having the old Sprint/whatever-it-is-now company. And I got to keep my old number.
I haven't had long distance service for 6-7 years, at least. Before I went with Comcast, I would buy a calling card and refresh it when I needed to. I don't make that many long, long distance calls but we have a lot of toll calls just around where I live.
I read that more people are dumping the land lines and using cell as their main #. Phone companies are hurting.
All the new phones have a gps built into them. So, if you get in trouble somewhere, they can find you by that as long as your battery is alive. A very good reason to have a car charger for both your cell phone and your car. If I traveled alone much, I'd have an extra car battery in my trunk and know how to install it. Well, I know how, but you get the idea.
My feeling is that any woman should know how to take care of herself in these types of situations.
You won't miss the house phone, Bonnie.

  16. Bonnie, I wish you could have been at Show and Tell at the meeting of the Old Tippecanoe Quilt Guild in Lafayette, Indiana, on Tuesday evening. It was like the Bonnie Hunter Admiration Society! You were kind enough to permit us to use some items from your website for our Retreat a couple years ago, and some of the ladies have made your scrap using techniques a permanent part of their routine. Sossity Smith did a program on organization, and refreshed their memories of your website address. Many finished scrap quilt tops were displayed, as well as a completely quilter, binding-in-progress Carolina Crossroads. We love you!

  17. We haven't had a land line for over four years years. We had one for a few days in Nov. 2002 and then got ride of it. The minute we got a land line we started receiving many, many calls from the presidential candidate parties. On Election Day we got 20 calls from the campaigns asking if we needed a ride to the polls. It drove me crazy. The next day the land line went away.

There are no campaign calls or telemarketing calls on cell phones.

  18. I haven't had a landline phone for at least eight years. No problem.
