One of these things is not like the others....

Or more like...HALF of these things are NOT like the others! I was happily sewing along on my second batch of plaid star struck blocks to make the quilt a queen sized one.

I got all the way to the pressing point before I realized that this second set of quarter blocks spin in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION! (*&@#$(*&(*&@!

What to do? What to do? I think I will try to come up with an alternate setting, and have two quilts. And use it as an object lesson on quilter's dyslexia after 11pm at night :c)

That WHOLE pile of quarter blocks at the bottom right of the picture are ALL wrong...or...maybe not wrong....just... DIFFERENT?!

Here are the "correct" blocks laid out. The center will measure 64" X 80" before borders so it will still turn out to be a nice twin/full size when done.
Oh the joys of quilting!

  1. Don't ya just hate that!! I can't tell you how many times I have things set out in the right way only to find that when I sew them .....yup...they're wrong!!! I have had a lot of welcomed surprises and new ways to do patterns as well as some upsets. Your smaller quilt looks great!! Your still an inspiration to a lot of us....keep up the good work...

  2. What about making a center section spinning one way, then a small border and the outside ones spinning the other way? Could give the quilt motion, but you won't know quite why... I'm sure you will come up with some wonderfully creative solution.

  3. Bonnie, I just left a note for you to e-mail me. My idea is exactly the same as Lesie.

  6. If you have enough of the "wrong" stars a thin solid inset border around the "right ones" then using the opposites outside that, works OK.... Take comfort in the fact we all suffer from quilter's dyslexia at times :-)

  7. Oh man that just sucks when you realize you've sewn merrily along and done them all wrong! I'm sure you will find a good way to use them so they look just wonderful!

  8. I really like the idea of using the "wrong" ones in a border around the outside. You would still get your queen size and I think it would actually be very attractive.
It does my quilter's heart good to know that someone of your experience and expertise makes the same boo-boo's that I do. LOL

  9. Well, the quilt is mighty nice! Oops on the wrong direction - still a very nice quilt. I also, like the idea of using the 'wrong' ones in a border - seems like a good story to go along with the quilt.

Remember, today is Friday the 13th! LOL

I am suffering my own version ... "Hey brain, get in gear!"

    We still love you!

  11. Precisely why I don't sew at night...quilter's dyslexia to the max for me. In your Maverick way, you will make some mighty fine lemonade from these "lemons."

  12. I think they look terrific no matter which way they are spinning. It's good to know that I'm not the only one to do this.

  13. Wow Bonnie:

As the others have said, I'm glad I'm not the only one to make those kinds of boo-boo's LOL. I was just saying to DH last week that I don't think I've ever made a quilt or sewing project that I didn't do something wrong! I guess misery loves company! I also like the idea of using those 'wrong' blocks in the border...this is how you come up with new creative settings!

  14. Oh Bonnie, I"ve been so busy I haven't had time to blog or anything. But I took a few mins tonight to see what you are up to - and sorry to see the "wrong" blocks, but what you have is wonderful! Those are my kind of colors!
